Andy Reid appears on WIP morning show

Some highlights

- Thinks Desean Jackson was the best WR in the draft "in terms of catching the football"

- He plays rookies when he thinks they're ready to play, thinks he has three this year that can play. It seems he counts Booker as one of those guys.

- They talk about Andy's snap at the media for only talking about the negative. Angelo askes if Andy understands why the media is negative, he blames it on the lack of a championship for 48 years(something he repeated several times). He also says the media and the city are seeing a decline in the team and that's making them negative. Reid responded by saying he doesn't see this and that Angelo is paid to stir up controversy. He jokingly(maybe?) suggested that the team and the media are partners because they're doing the games. Reid then challenged the WIP morning show to come out to practice and actually see the team and that if they did they'd come out feeling so much more positive. The sidekick then chimed in with a joke about Howard Eskin, implying that by coming to practice they would butt kissers. Hard to figure that one out...

- Angelo claims that he doesn't need to go to practice or talk to players because they never "give me much." He says Andy holds a lot of press conferences and doesn't say much. He claims that watching practice won't show him much. He asks Andy why he is not more open. Andy responds that he tells the media what they need to know and is as honest as he can be. Andy said that talking about the poor play of specific players publicly doesn't help them win.

- Angelo says the #1 concern of the fans is wide recievers and he doesn't understand Andy's philsophy about WRs. Andy gives a kind of generic answer where he says he likes the guys he has, they've added a guy that can help(Jackson), and that they all do different things. Andy blames the lack of production in the red zone on the lack of TE play they had rather than WR play.

- Angelo says he questions Andy's personal urgency to win now. Andy interupts and says "Stop, we're not waiting a year. We're going to win right now." Angelo asks if that's the case then why trade his first round pick? Andy says look at the package they got and the value they got in terms of Jackson and Laws. Hugh Douglas says they should have drafted Rashard Mendenhall or Kenny Phillips the safety from Miami. Andy said that's where evaluation comes in.

- Andy says that he hears that people wonder why if they spend so much money on CBs, then why not spend that same money on WRs? He says its the wrong wya to look at it. He's invested in playmakers. The corners are there not just to cover WRs, they're there to make plays and create turnovers. Andy says he sees all 3 corners he has as starters and that it's a "great situation." He doesn't understand why the media spent so much time focusing on the Lito situation. They respond by saying it's not the medias' job to be the Eagles PR team and only focusing on the positive, Andy says he understands that but at some point it's enough.

As a Redskins fan

I think Reid is a great coach. It sucks to be him though, a coach in a diehard sports city, that also hasn’t won a championship in 48yrs. It’s my belief that it’s the sole purpose of wacky DJ’s to create a story or get a reaction. Personally I give Reid props for even showing up to that interview.

I remember the Eagles doing just fine without a top-flight WR. Since making the playoffs in 2000-2003 (not counting TO’s tenure ) they went 46-12. Their one constant has been great defensive play especially in the secondary. I think it’s safe to say Reid knows whats going on.

No one ever noticed how the offense is improved without TO? There’s more to an offense than passing yards to one guy.

6 offense last year…
#2 in 2006…
#19 with TO with distractions in 2005.
#9 with TO with no distractions in 2004.

Yeah, our offense has been kinda perfectly fine. If anything, our problem has been special teams and lack of defensive turnovers. I know there’s more to offense than just moving the ball upfield; you have to actually score. I think last year was a fluke with a lot of bad breaks and missed opportunities. It’s kinda funny how under the radar the Eagles are with the NFL’s #6 offense, #10 defense, and finishing last in the division. No one expects anything out of us, except we, the fans, and the smart fans of division rivals who pay attention.

It shows we were close...

But in the end an offense is truly judged on points scored… At 21 ppg the Eagles offense was pretty much dead center of the league. Basically they were average. Even if you take away the 50 point explosion against Detroit and the awful showing without Westbrook and Thomas against the Giants… The Eagles were still average in terms of scoring.

The fact that they racked up yards means there’s reason for optimism.

Big Plays

Our team is good but last year we lacked big plays. Also, a few big games against weaker opponents (see Detroit) skewed the numbers a bit.

We need to force more turnovers on Defense and generate more red zone points on Offense.

That’s the difference between being last in our division and getting deep in the playoffs.

How do you define a #1 Receiver?

This relates a bit to your earlier post but I’ll put it here because Cataldi mentioned the WR spot. If Kevin Curtis had had 10TDs instead of 6 would he be considered a #1? He had 77 catches and +1100 yards. The tough thing for me is determining a metric for a #1 WR. Maybe it’s because he’s not 6’ 4”?

I think, like McNabb said and Reid reiterated, it’s about having playmakers – especially on the defensive side of the ball. We got through the 2004 playoffs with Todd Pinkston, Freddie Mitchell and Greg Lewis as our top three receivers. Sure the NFC East and the entire conference has changed but defense still wins championships.

i would love to deffine kevin Curtis as a #1 receiver but the unfortunat thing is that he has underachived in the one area that counts. that is points , TDs. thats not to say he wont do that this year, i think he will, but he didnt do that last year which mad him not a #1

#1 WR..

... is a wideout that a qb can cont on to make plays consistently. every big time receiver must have the ability to catch a short pass & turn it into a big gain AND be the goto guy in the red zone. curtis has the hands and speed to turn a quick slant into a big gain but he doesn’t have the presence to be a reliable receiver in the red zone, where receiver size becomes more of an advantage than just speed.

Isn't a little pre-mature to say

This was Curtis’s first year as a #1 option and all things considered (learning a new offense, non-100% Mcnabb, et al) he did extremely well. Let’s take a look at the top receivers of 8 of the 12 teams in the playoffs last year.

Name REC YDS TD
Santan Moss 61 808 3
Donald Driver 82 1048 2
Joey Gallaway 57 1014 6
Bobby Engram 94 1147 6
Santonia Holmes 52 942 8
Reggie Williams 38 629 10
Justin Gage 55 750 2
Vincent Jackson 41 623 3

Suddenly Curtis doesn’t look so bad. Having a healthy LJ and more respect for Celek who I believe will be a stud will open a lot of things up.

I agree

I think a lot is expected of Curtis going into his 2nd year. Like I said, if he had 10TDs instead of 6 I think we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Interview

I love the part where Angelo says something like ”...if you’re interested in winning now why did you trade out of the first round?” and Andy goes: “Come on Angelo.” Stupid question.

by ajay on May 12, 2008 4:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Of course they watch the Food Network; have you seen the women on that channel? Nigella Lawson, Giada De Laurentiis, Sandra Lee and Ingrid Hoffman can heal damn near anything.

Instead of complaining Reid doesn’t say much, maybe Cataldi should do his homework and ask better questions instead of playing “Voice of the Mook.”

Nobody has explained to me what they should have done at #19. Had they drafted Otah or traded up for Branden Albert, neither of those guys was going to play for at least a year. Obviously none of the WRs were worth a pick that high, so except for Kenny Phillips, who also wasn’t going to play much this year either, trading down and getting another #1 pick was a great deal. A friend of mine was angry they took Jackson at 49 instead of 46 because he felt like they shouldn’t have “played around with it.” He’s a moron.

She got a big dome...

but no doubt she’s hot

I think an ELITE receiver is a better term for what most of us would like to have on this team.
I’d define that as someone who gets 10+ TDs, has the speed to get deep and commands a double most of the time.
I don’t know what the jackasses on the morning show are talking about obviously the FO tried to get an elite receiver this off-season and it didn’t work out.
Now if you want to pan them for drafting Freddie Mitchell in ‘01 over Reggie Wayne, Chad Johnson (not that I want that douche) Steve Smith and TJ Houshmanzadeh ….. well diffferent story.

The road to victory!
