Upside Down Sports World?

How did the non-fantasy world of sports get turned so upside down?

Although it might have been upside down before the meteoric rise of fantasy sports, I remember, as a kid, sports being clean fun, full of good guys and bad guys that really weren't that bad, but they didn't play for the team you loved. Dope was a fool; cool was great weather in the summer of the South that I grew up in; gay was happy; kisses were enough to rock your world. Cards had functionality and heroes pictures, especially in my bike spokes. The pictures and stats on them were meant to be wondrously revered, akin to the Bible, and always had to waft the fragrance of old bubble gum and stains in the worst place on the card. Teams stayed with their fans; fans rooted their teams on with fanaticism that gave rise to a whole culture.

Today, I could spend most of the day reading about, watching news about, or listening to talk radio about the world of sports 24-7. Unfortunately, my main reaction to the majority of what would be the topics consuming the airways, pages to be read, and/or the voices in my head, could be summed up by W-T-F! What happened to pristine? How did happy become dirty? How could truly wonderful players of sports become the silent and unnoticed minority? How do Governors, Politicians, Public figures and NHL players all end up on the same Madame's well documented accounting of their spending habits, freakish tendencies, and preferences of which ladies of the night to spend their bangin' bucks on?

How did PITA get into the position of being noticed when a horse dies in a tragic drama on a track, as has happened for eons, by requesting that a jockey lose his livelihood, an owner get barred from the sport, etc. and then become a needed voice of indignation about murdering dogs, the morons that bet on watching them fight and maim themselves. What happened to the leadership of time when Jurgenson, Title, Unitas, Starr and Staubach were the featured leaders of teams that didn't represent gang colors; cities that could parade them and not have to wonder what could lurk around the next corner the next day and make Mother's ashamed when their offspring told who their sports idols were. Instead we now have the quarterbacks of today in prisons, team captains involved in murders by friends at Super Bowls, Spygate and players being welcomed back onto rosters after being charged with drug use, selling, and leaving the country to play while suspended by the NFL.

I am sick to the point of ralphing from hearing more about Spygate every day. New England cheated; they got caught; they were punished of sorts. Brady defends his Coach and team; Darth Belichick points the stubby at Walsh; the Commissioner covers his butt magnificently. Enough! Tell me how we can get out troops out of Harm's Way and give them the tools and supplies to finish the job, and rejoin their families. Tell me how we can help the organizations that are supposed to help the wives left behind as their husbands are deployed. Tell me how to help a grieving child understand the loss and void they will suffer for the rest of their life. Please do not tell me more about the trash that has taken our pastimes, values, and fun and tarnished it to the point of making it unrecognizable for what it once was.

The following matchups please me more than the supposed success that the EHarmonys, the Adult Friend Finders, the Hotcha Momma match-sites proclaim to provide for their paying customer fan bases. Belichick deserves Walsh; Clemens deserves Pete Rose; Tonya Harding deserves Mike Tyson; Sean Avery deserves Ricky Williams; Ottawa deserves Bryan Murray!

I realize that with all these role models and the angst and turmoil that they have brought into the sporting world, fantasy sports allows me THE escape. I do not have to accept these players on teams that I put together. I do not have to read about all the abuses that greed and avarice have brought into my sporting world. I can make the choice to lose rather than accept a name on a roster of mine of someone I despise. Fantasy sports help me forget all the topics mentioned above. I can make my teams up of names that might be lousy, but they don't have criminal records rather than college degrees. My fantasy sports give me the world turned right side up. Fantasy allows me to escape and enjoy again.

While sports channels like ESPN have blessed with the ability to see every amazing highlight around the world, they also are the downfall of sports. Sports legends in the past weren't these perfect men. They, too, had flaws like players today, but the difference was that they weren't being watched 24-7. They could live their lives away from the field.

That is true. I should clarify that my angst stems from the changes in our culture and the types of blemishes that are different today than they were in the past. My problem isn't the womanizing, the drinking, the carrying on off late hours; that probably wouyld speak volumes of my shortcomings that it doesn't bother me as much. What does is the lying like politicians and the abuse of women
