Meet the Draft Picks: Brian Brohm

Brian Brohm

Brohm - Louisville

Almost as surprising as the pick of Jordy Nelson in the second round was the pick of Brian Brohm in the second round.  We all know the Packers quarterback saga this offseason.  But still, no one really thought the Packers would pick a quarterback this early.  As I have said multiple and innumerable times, if I was the Packers, I would have drafted San Diego State quarterback Kevin O’Connell in the third or fourth round (he went to New England at the end of the third round).

Still, the Packers got a nice quarterback in Brohm.  The third quarterback drafted overall, after Matt Ryan went to the Atlanta Falcons and Joe Flacco went to the Baltimore Ravens, Brohm started games in all four years of his college career at Louisville.  In the 33 games he started, he compiled a 24-9 record.  He became the first Big East quarterback to ever throw for over 10,000 yards in the Cardinals’ high-powered offense.  If Louisville had actually had a defense, he would have been seen as a more successful quarterback because his team would have won more games.  He was seen as a Top 5 talent, had he left after his junior season for the 2007 NFL Draft.  But he didn’t.  And now he is a Packer.

There is so much more to read about Brohm and that can be read here.

Putting Brohm behind Aaron Rodgers creates an interesting situation in Green Bay.  Many people would feel that Brohm was drafted to replace Rodgers at the first sign of panic.  I feel that Brohm and Matt Flynn were drafted as security blankets for Rodgers.  The two of them were established college quarterbacks, skilled at making plays or being game managers if the situation called for it.  Brohm will see minimal playing time this year, as this is Rodgers’ team and it will be Rodgers’ team.

The drafting of Brian Brohm does impact the Packers, but only in the sense of backing up Aaron Rodgers.
