Marlins set to start important road trip

The Florida Marlins, coming off a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks and taking 2-of-3 from the San Francisco Giants, now face their biggest test of the year -- and it's on the road against its top competitors from the National League East.

Marlins probable pitcher

Ricky Nolasco

  • RHP
  • (3-3) 4.62 ERA

Marlins: Nolasco's last start is probably one he'll remember for a long time to come. Against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Nolasco found himself matched up against the hottest pitcher in baseball at that point, Brandon Webb. Webb was 9-0 in nine starts coming into the game, but Nolasco pitched seven innings of one-run ball to give Webb his only blemish of the season. The 6-foot-2 righty allowed just three hits and struck out seven. It was Nolasco's longest outing since Aug. 13, 2006, at Arizona.

Mets hoping home cooking helps

Mike Pelfrey and the Mets are hoping that a return to the familiar surroundings of Shea Stadium will serve to spark an improvement in their baseball fortunes when they host the Marlins on Monday evening.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • RHP
  • (2-5) 5.00 ERA

Mets: After two effective starts, one in which he made folks think a no-hitter was possible, Pelfrey endured a poor outing against the Braves Wednesday night. He faced 24 batters in four innings, 12 of them reached base and six of them -- a season high for him -- scored. Pelfrey now has lost five straight decisions.

Marlins 7, Mets 3

Statement victory

The Marlins came to New York to open a 10-game road trip and showed the Mets they are for real with a convincing win. Luis Gonzalez's three-run double in the fourth put Florida in front to stay, and Ricky Nolasco notched his fourth victory.

Series at a Glance

Reyes homers twice

Jose Reyes got the Mets off to a fast start with home runs in his first two at-bats, but Mike Pelfrey lasted only four innings and allowed six runs in the opening loss to the first-place Marlins. The defeat was the Mets' seventh in their past eight games.
