PGA Weekly Sleepers: The Memorial Tournament - Muirfield Village Golf Club - Dublin, OH

This week at Muirfield, there is a nice depth of talent to pick from for sleepers, and it's possible that you could put some of them on the same level as the "starts".  Realizing this, I made sure to include one true dark horse in my Sleepers this week; someone who will send everyone scurrying for the profile page of this golfer.  This is Jack's tournament, and it's truly designed in his image, requiring length, accuracy, hitting in position and making putts.  All three of the following are capable of doing just that, and should, at the very least, compete for a big check this week.

Geoff Ogilvy - Anyone who reads my articles regularly knows that I love Ogilvy's game, and in a week where he's not the "Start", he gets to be a sleeper.  He's got a game that sets up beautifully for the course, and we all know he's got the ability to close out tournaments.  He's 52nd in Driving Distance, 23rd in GIR, 15th in Sand Saves, 24th in All-Around Rank and 17th in Scrambling.  He's not the greatest putter in the world (118th in Putting Average, 107th in Putts Per Round) and isn't the best at keeping it in the fairway (118th in Driving Accuracy); but neither of these last two attributes are off-the-map terrible, and if Ogilvy can get the putter working, he's got a great shot to win.  Even if he doesn't he's got a great shot to cash a big check.

Ryan Moore - Wha?!?  Yes, actually I like Moore in this spot for a couple reasons.  He's played really well (two top-5s) over the last month, and finished second at Jack's Tournament a year ago.  The only part of his game where he really struggles is from the fairway to the green (144th in GIR), which is troublesome to be sure, because approach shots on this course are critical.  However, the rest of his game sets up well.  He's 47th in Driving Distance; more than good enough.  He's one of the better putters in the field (38th in Putting Average, 27th in Putts Per Round), 63rd in Sand Saves, 67th in Scrambling and 13th in Bounce Back.  His Driving Accuracy is a little below average (106th in Driving Accuracy), but it shouldn't kill him too much.  If he plays at his best, he'll contend.  If not, he'll struggle to make the cut.  That's why they're called sleepers, right?

K.J. Choi - "Tommy, why are you picking the defending champ?"  Ok, I know, I know; it seems like I break this hard-and-fast rule too often (actually, this would be the third time), but in this case, like the others, there is more to it than just "defending champ".  Choi IS the defending champ, but he's also finished top-10 at Muirfield three of the last four years.  That's not just consistency, that's GOOD consistency.  I understand he's missed his last two cuts after a T-43rd at The Masters.  But his game and his experience on the course is too much to ignore.  He's 80th in Driving Distance and 78th in Driving Accuracy, good enough for 41st in Total Driving.  He's 14th in GIR, obviously one of the best numbers on Tour.  He's 23rd in Sand Saves and 48th in Scrambling.  These numbers are fantastic, and even his weak spot, putting (98th in Putting Average, 126th in Putts Per Round), isn't all that terrible.  Choi loves this tournament, and enjoys his relationship with Jack; so my guess is he'll go above and beyond to play his best here.  Don't be surprised to see a lot of Choi on Sunday.
