Safties of the AFC West from an Oakland Raiders eye view

We have come to the penultimate post in the "From a Raiders' Eye View" series. The one thing that can be gleaned from the series thus far is that it appears that the San Diego Chargers are still the team to beat in the AFC West. They have led in nearly all of th categories thus far. The Raiders have been all over the map, but tend to be trending high in many categories, and look to be a team on the rise. Tonight's post is how the safety tandems of the AFC West stack up.

Oakland Raiders:

The Raiders are expecting the acquisition of Gibril Wilson to put Michael Huff in a position to be able to make more plays. Huff has thus far been solid in shutting down opposing tight ends, but has not had the flashy plays that were expected when he was selected seventh overall. Wilson is expected to be the intimidator in the Raiders' defensive backfield who will play in the box and support the run defense.

OUTLOOK: The scapegoat Stuart Schweigert is gone, so the pressure is on the Wilson and Huff tandem.

Kansas City Chiefs:

Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard are not household names, but they make for a young and potentially dangerous safety tandem. They combined for 5 interceptions last year and are looking to improve on that total.

OUTLOOK: Like their corners, these two are young. Unlike their corners, these two have some experience.

San Diego Chargers:

Free Safety Eric Weddle is coming into his second year, whilst strong safety Clinton Hart is a vet. Look for these guys to be able to be opportunistic and capitalize on the mistakes caused by the pressure from the front seven.

OUTLOOK: These guys by themselves aren't going to terrorize anyone. Thats Shawne Merriman's job.

Denver Broncos:

Former All-Pro FS John Lynch is all but done. The Broncos look to try to squeeze yet one more year out of the old vet. Hamza Abdullah looks to be starting for the first time this year, and in his three year career has yet to register a single interception. Earlier this offseason, the Broncos were making noise about acquiring one of the Chiefs' back up safeties.

OUTLOOK: Look out! Not looking good for Denver.

Almost done charting the opposition for now here at TFDS.

The Broncos actually aquired Marlon McCree from the Chargers. He was replaced by Eric Weddle last season.

Time for Huff to huff & puff & blow up some receivers. If Kelly & Warren plays well against the run we lead the league in interceptions. We will win our division & make the playoffs.

I would have liked to keep Schweigert on the team as a back-up and special teamer but I don't think he would have accepted a back-up role. Our secondary looks really good, really good. Start the season already.

I'm with you Diamond! Oh well, can't have them all like when we make a move over the next two years to address line issues as they warrent. We will have to look at the cap twice to ensure we really wanted to spend what we have recently. I do like the idea of having this problem much more than the position we've been in for several years.

Start the season!

The Raiders have have the Scariest secondary in the league, teams will try to run more than throw a ball to anyof their recievers in fear of being PICKED OFF!!!!

yes good article, i do believe they will be the best backs in the league once they start meshing well, which i think will happen very quickly considering they are all experienced players. asomugha, hall, huff, wilson (option nickel CB stanford routt) damn man ... Al has done it again! And i dont know about winning the division... but they definetely have a shot at playoffs if warren, kelly, and sands (joseph) do their job!

which means if they can collapse the pocket on pass plays, keep their hands up (like gerrard warren LOVES TO DO to stop kicks anyway) and plug up those running lanes, then that'll take pressure off our allstar backs, which means they'lll make A LOT of plays on the ball very consistantly.

It's easier to stop the run when you know it's coming, and teams aint gonna pass on us

If Gibril Wilson led the safties in tackles the last 4 years, then he will DEFINITELY lead again behind our paltry front 7. I think Huff will record at least 3 INTs this year (more than Schwaggert had in 4 years as our starter).

I agree that our defense should be an awesome unit against the pass. But if our defensive line does not stop the run and we do not improve on tackling it will be a long season. Without these improvements our d-backs will have to pull those bigger shoulder pads out of the locker.

I've never understood why more pressure was not put on huff, to step up against the run. I mean stu was at free safety, he shouldnt even be expected to be make 80 tackles. I just hope huff finds his game this year, or we'll be looking at another first round, top ten pick bust.

I take back everything i said before, I love my new found team and Im not going to deny it anymore, I loved Rich Gannon. I really did, hes great. But then I went into denial about my favorite sports team and I wrote some really bad stuff. mildog is correct. this team will definitely crap the bed if our d line doesn t perform the way i hope it does. sands MUST step up along with kelly. if they play well like i think they will then yes the raiders linebackers and dbs will make opposing quarterbacks cry on the sidelines wondering what went wrong haaaaa. lookin forward to a year of chewin teams up and spittin em out. i can't f**kin wait! til it all begins against the broncos.

If the 31st ranked run defense gave up 5.2 ypc with Kelly IN, and improved to 4.7 ypc after he went on IR after 7 weeks....explain that again on how he's going to "step it up" again?

Oh yeah..because Al paid him big bucks, twice what he was worth.

Oh sure...that works.

We all need to stop speaking in "if"s. The Dline is a serious concern. Having a great secondary will surely help for reasons that the educated don't need explained and the uneducated may never understand. However, no team can survive with a Dline that gives up 5 yards a carry. Especially when this teams needs to prove it can put up enough points to force the other team to pass. This year is a turning point for this team as the offense will start it's maturity process. Getting caught up in "if"s doesn't mean anything. We need to deal in what is known about this teams strengths, weaknesses and question marks. That means playing to our strengths, overcoming our weaknesses and not relying too much on our question marks.

Strengths: Run game, secondary

Weaknesses: Stopping the run

Question marks: Passing game, rushing the passer, the tackle positions

Mike49er what you need to understand is that Tommy Kelly was playing DE which isnt his natural position(its like when Warren Sapp played DE)... Now he has the oppurtunity to play the 3 technique his original position and Terdell Sands can play the nose guard... Derrick Burgess RDE and Jay Richardson at LDE... Im not saying thats the most attractive D-line in the league but it could work with Gerard Warren and William Joseph rotating in at the DT positions and Edwards and Spires coming in to help Burgess put some pressure on the QB... Edwards is a very good situational DE(meaning he's a good pass rusher) and Spires is a savy proven veteran with still enough speed and power to be a situational DE as well... I dont think our ability to rush the passer is our biggest worry i think its obviously stopping the run... But i think an in the box safety should help a mediocore D-line(at best)... A quick example two years ago the Colts couldnt stop my grandmother(lol) from running all over them... They didnt have a prolific D-line offcourse they had awesome DE's but they had average to below average DT's, but when Sanders came in they looked like they had a wall instead of a D-line... I think Wilson should average alot of tackles on playing for the Raiders... And i agree with Dizzle about our stregnths, weaknesses, and question marks... But the awesome thing is that our questions could turn out to be our stregnths...

LDizzle - very accurate summary.

Hopefully Patrick does one summarizing all of the articles in the set on this subject. It would be nice to see how the Raiders stack up overall. Rank each position 1-4 and show them all in a table. These were all accurate assessments, and in most of them, SD was #1 and OAK #2. Safety may be the only advantage we have. Post that to your PFW pigskin preview beeyotch.

Hey Jon Y what games have you wached Croyle strong arm? huh? And before you talk Jon do your research and do it correctly Kelly isnt a converted DE, his original positon is DT, he was playing DE because Warren Sapp was there and no one will bench Sapp and Terdell Sands was playing the nose guard position... Kelly was playing DE mostly during 1st and 2nd down... So until you get ALL OF THE FACTS CORRECT DONT TRY AND GET SMART WITH SOMEBODY... YOU SEEM TO BE TALKING OUT YOUR ASS AND YOU PROBABLY TAKE THNGS IN YOU ASS TOO BUT THATS ANOTHER CONVERSATION... And i didnt even say Edgertaon Hartwell was gonna become a beast did i? huh? No i didnt i said he could help us against the run he's very big and when on the field he has always been solid against the run... And William Joseph was brought in for rotation... And it doesnt matter what he's done with his other team... A couple of years ago Derrick Burgess had ONE really good game for the Eagles in the playoffs when he sacked Mike Vick twice... And he came to Oakland totally overshadowed by the Randy Moss and Lamont Jordan signings... He has truly been one of the only consitent player we've had in the last couple years... a double digit DE since he's been in Oakland... Im not saying thats what Joseph will be but he's a big guy and can come in and relive Sands and Kelly for a couple of plays... And Jon Y about the other converstation we were having earlier in another post about Derrick Johson and Donnie Edwards... I said that Edwards was to old and no one knew who Derrick Johnson was... And you said many people dont know that Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard were AWESOME players... Actually people do... Everyone knows those two guys, Burgess, and Asomoghua have been our strenghts for the past couple of years... Morrsion has already been on NFL network and he's gotten publicity, Burgess has been in the probowl multiple times... Asomoghua is awesome and one of the best CB's in the history of the NFL says he's the best man-man corner... And Howard WAS underrated not anymore remember "The Law Firm"... Get your head out of your ASS Chiefs fans...

And Mitchell you said "Jamarcus Russell’s weaknesses are being too dumb to tie his shoes and weighing four hundred pounds". Come on your a FUCKING IDIOT thats all you could say? Grow the fuck up... I think the page you wanted to go on was www.nicklodeon.com.... Dumbasses...

Huff is a bust so far. The Raiders drafted a FS and tried to make him play SS. He's not big enough to play in the box. He better show something this year.

You can't rank this as one of the best groups in the NFL or AFC West because they have not played a single down together. Chemistry/scheme play a big part and don't down play the Raiders failure to land a DE to help pressure the QB. A great pass rush can make your DB's life a lot easier.

Until the D can stop the run it's going to be more of the same. They might stay in games but will eventually be worn down and give up big plays because they will have to gamble to get to the QB.

Kind of vague, isn't it? Yes, your "questions" COULD turn out to be your strengths, but you can't make it an automatic, can you? Most raiderfans are.

I'll say it again regarding Kelly..WHY do you think he's now going to be a total beast playing the 3-down?

Kelly has been pretty much a disappointment his whole time with the Raiders, right? (that's why pretty much everyone was shocked at his new contract's number..Al could have signed him for MUCH LESS..but that's another story)

I recall Jasper and Sapp pumping up Kelly's prospects. Going into 2006 Raider fans were saying THE SAME THING about Kelly, huge gigantic hopes, right? that after his first couple of years, and the fact he was now going to be playing fulltime DT you all thought it was a lock.

Instead he had a horrible year. Raiders gave him lots of playing time, in the interior, hoping his skills at pass rushing would pay off, but he ended up with only around 4 sacks or so..FOR THE YEAR. For that matter, lots of the problems were blamed on Kelly, that he was literally being pushed backwards of running plays.

Now, how is it that all of a sudden, a player who had problems getting to the qb, who also had problems at the point of attack is going to absolutely SHINE at the 3 down technique?

Not saying it's impossible, but it sure isn't a given.

Now, the fact he had a torn ACL also makes things iffy.

Speaking of that...can anyone explain to me the logic behind giving a guy who basically had a completely bad, bad 06 season, and had a less than mediocre '07 half season, a record contract at $50 million, with 18 guaranteed?

I know, I know, it's not your money, and who cares an all, but a RECORD??? After Kelly's '06 and '07 season do you not think he would have jumped at a $30 million contract, with $9 or 10 million guaranteed?

And Terdell Sands??? He's been a major bust for his career, hasn't he? Released with little to no playing time from first two teams, in his years with the Raiders been riding the bench. Most playing time he had was last year, and is obviously part of the group that was 31st in the league.

IMO, NEITHER of the above should be viewed as solid.

Mike49er way to point out what Raider fans have been saying since Kelly was signed. Do you think what you said was some kind of revelation? We Raider fans know far better than you how much of a gamble paying Kelly all that money is and that AD could have had him locked up for far less. But all we have at this point is hope. And no amount of hate and party pooping you do can change that. So stop wasting your breath or finger muscles prattling on about it endlessly. Mike49er: Considering how many Raider fans are posting "Why pay him all that money, and not play him there" would prove that you, as usual, don't have a clue. Now, had you stated 'Oh, I knew that" you would come across looking less dense. But looking less dense has never been an option for you, has it?

At least now we will see what Aso is really worth. No more days off because our other corner is just as dangerous to throw against. Aso will prove if he is worth the money he thinks he should get. The Raiders did the right thing by not giving him a big contract before he has been tested. This year will give Al and the organization a real look at his worth, because no one really knows how good or bad he is, but it all will come out this year.

That's what the meek do..lol..it's called "Hold my hand, I'm feeling insecure" mode of posting.

Considering both of your posts, I can see why you count on each other.

You just slapped around, went over and checked it out, and slinkered off, tail between legs.

Obviously you saw the link in my post above.

So, again, that makes you my bitch.

Now, shut up little girl. lol...You're an embarrassment.

Yes, yes, I know, Raider fans think you are as well.

In this case has nothing to do with you being a Raider fan, has everything to do with you being a spineless worm.

What??? Is the only reply you have is "You come over here to post'??? IS THAT IT???

Get back in your hole, little girl.

You're toast.
