Posted by Landon Evanson in Minnesota Twins
June 23rd, 2008 at 2:37 pm ET |
His ERA might be over 5 and he may as well be a southpaw with his less-than overwhelming stuff but El
Caballo Cubano wins — he is winning for the Twins, he won for his old teams — and this past week he got to combine those two elements.
Hernandez beat the Nats last Tuesday and put down Brandon Webb and the D-Backs yesterday afternoon to move his 2008 record against former teams to 2-0.
Hernandez once again went 7 not-so dominant innings but left with the lead and after Jesse Crain and Joe Nathan did their thang in the 8th and 9th to earn his eighth victory of the season. Livan’s latest win gave the Twins their second straight series sweep and left Minnesota just a game-and-a-half behind the front-running White Sox in the AL Central. Eight wins over their last nine games sounds lovely heading into a three-game set at Petco against the lowly Friars.
To recap:
El Caballo Cubano’s record: 8-4
Minnesota’s record when Hernandez starts: 12-5
Fastballs that top out at 84 miles per hour, eephus curveballs and more hits than innings pitched? Sure, but
you know what — I will take it every day of the week. Rest assured friends, my Livan man crush only grows stronger by the day.
And this just in — over his last ten starts in the minors, Francisco Liriano is 3-1 and has struck out nearly a batter an inning (.084). Translation: Liriano is getting better and once he’s ready for the second half the White Sox had better hope the divide between the South Side and Minneapolis is a lot more than a game-and-a-half.
Just sayin’.
