Shocked? Get Over It And Get A Win

Am I shocked that this team is 0-2? Yes. If you had told me before the season that the Eagles would lose to the Packers and the Redskins, I would have said no way. However, it has happened. This team has been there before. They were 0-2 in 2003 and went 12-4, so it happens. I just did not think that neither the Packers nor the Redskins were good enough to beat the Eagles. I'm still not sure if either of those teams are that good, but I am sure that the Eagles did not play well at times and have some things that they need to address.

The first thing was addressed when they brought in Reno Mahe to return punts. There's no doubt in my mind that had Mahe been a part of this team on opening day in Green Bay, the Eagles would have won that game. As far as the last game was concerned, there were other issues. There was the problem that Donovan McNabb and the offense had. I thought there was a mismatch between wide receiver Santana Moss and cornerback Will James, the Redskins moved at will in that direction - no pun intended. I thought they would throw at him; they did and did so successfully.

Reese: McNabb can and will get back to a Pro Bowl-caliber level
McNabb is not moving the way he's moved in the past, not that you would expect him to this quickly after an ACL injury. However, I think it's affecting his throwing right now. I think it's affecting his escape ability, his mobility in the pocket. He's not playing like Donovan McNabb at his best right now. I think he's capable of raising his level of play. We saw that during the preseason where he was absolutely terrific at times. I think he can and will get back to that level.

I don't know if the injury has changed him mentally other than the fact that when you do something and everything's clicking, you have the much more confidence in the next throw. If you're struggling, you might think 'I hope this gets there' instead of confidently going 'Take this!' It's a different mindset, but it's the same for any athlete. It's the same as a tennis player who is serving well or a golfer whose putts are falling down. He subtlety believes that every putt is going in the hole. Even the great ones like Tiger Woods have days where nothing goes right. They miss their first three 3-footers and the rest of the day they don't have same degree of confidence or aggressiveness.

How does this team get back on track? By winning. By doing all of the things right. By coming out on fire against the Detroit Lions, they cannot afford to go into a lull like they have been and be behind at the half. I would like to see this team come out and score 17 first-half points. They have got to come out and play from ahead not from behind, make somebody else catch up and when that happens the defense can roar. This defense hasn't been bad. The defense has been good enough to win, but there has been insufficient pressure on the passer and I can't imagine Jim Johnson would disagree with that

I host Andy Reid's Coach's Show every week on 94.1 WYSP and the one thing about Andy is that he always keeps on an even keel. When it comes to the offense, I just feel that he doesn't believe they are executing the plays. There are far too many breakdowns far too many mistakes. Coaches always say ""We've got to clean this up"" but the truth of the matter is there are too many penalties. The offensive line has been inconsistent there are times when Donovan McNabb went back to pass. There are things that have to happen. This team has to stop making mistakes that get them beat and one of those repetitive mistakes is Donovan being off-target. He had Kevin Curtis open for what would have been a touchdown. He had Reggie Brown open at times. The wide receivers are not getting open all the time, but they are open enough for plays to be made.

After the loss on Monday, Brian Westbrook said how didn't think the team had the necessary sense of urgency. Westbrook is down there on the sidelines and he has an idea a better idea of his teammates' barometer than I do. However, how could you not be excited about a season opener in Green Bay? I'm excited walking into the stadium. How can you not be excited to the point where you're worrying about being too high and opening the home game up against the Washington Redskins, a division rival? If this team isn't feeling a sense of urgency, if it doesn't reek with intensity then something's wrong and I don't understand that.

Lions quarterback Jon Kitna isn't going to remind anybody of Johnny Unitas but he is a veteran quarterback who has been around. He knows the reads and very often knows how to manage a game. He does that well and he has four of the best receivers in football. I don't think there's a better quartet than them. Roy Williams is dangerous and those of you who haven't seen Calvin Johnson are in for a treat. Not that this is a weekend we'd like to get treated, but he is the best receiver to come out of college in some time. He's a real talent. They have Shaun McDonald, so they're good. In fact, they're very, very good.

After a loss, I wish the next game was the next night. That's why I wish I were a baseball announcer because you only have to wait 24 hours and then you're back at it again. The Eagles can't afford to fall to 0-3. You can recover from a 0-2 start. It's very, very difficult to lose three games right off the bat that you planned on winning. It's a little severe to call this a must-win game because the Eagles are not officially eliminated. There is no reason this team can't come back and win Sunday, I really expect them to.

The Eagles need to look across the street at The Phillies, now there's a team playing with a sense of unrgency! No more excuses. It is time to win!
