Charles Barkley Doesn't Think Any 2008 Free Agents Make Sixers a Contender
Sir Charles was a guest on NBC10's Sports Final last night alongside John Clark and WIP's Anthony Gargano talking Sixers, Phillies, Eagles and more. The entire portion of the show Sir Charles was on was typical Barkley. The man is an entertainer and knows his stuff.
When it comes to the Sixers, Charles thinks Andre Iguodala's true colors came through in the playoffs where he didn't perform very well against legit competition. Aside from not being real high on Iguodala, Chuck isn't in love with Josh Smith either. "Josh Smith doesn't make them a legit contender," he says. Video below.
When asked what he would like the Sixers to do with the money, Sir Charles says patience is the key. He'd prefer they save their cash until they develop into more of a contender and then bring in a player who can put you over the top. "If you give Josh Smith $11 million dollars does that make you a legit contender," Charles asks.
Clearly Barkley doesn't think so.
He continues giving jabs at the current roster, "The Sixers are corning the market on guys that can't shoot. They need some shooters."
"If you played a zone against the Sixers, they'd probably score 60 points."
Ouch.
When the focus of the conversation turns to the Phils and the struggles of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, Charles points out that Philly is always tougher on black guys. He also calls the Phillies franchise cheaper than Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Are the world's dominant and formerly most dominant athletes not taking Chuck out to enough dinners at The Palm?
The segment closes with Charles talking about Donovan McNabb and the Eagles and finishes with a little Howard Eskin bashing. Gotta love Sir Charles ripping on the Burger King.

Except maybe that Burger King and the guy who eats nothing but Burger King are very good friends.

I hate when race is brought into play. I don't think that the fans boo Howard and give Utley standing ovations because of their skin color. It's not a matter of this city being harder on black people. Everyone knows that Chase gives it his all everyday. Even though he was mired in a slump, we all knew he would have slumber parties in the film room, work in the cages, and do whatever it took to fix his problems at the plate. Howard just keeps on doing the same thing, and that's striking out. I think any smart fan will tell you that his strikeout rate is not simply atoned for by his homerun/RBI numbers. Utley does not own the all-time major league record for strikeouts in a season. If he did, he might not be liked as much either.

I'd normally be inclined to ignore comments like these, but Sir Charles is the expert on wasting money.

I agree, it seems pointless for the Sixers to waste money on a mediocre talent. Call me crazy, but I see a future move coming that brings Allen Iverson back to Philly.

John, you are crazy.

Why is anyone asking this bloated moron about the Phils? If he followed them at all, he'd know Burrell was treated more poorly than Howard ever was or will be. Can Barkley spell retard?

i can't wait for this weekend so i can boo all of them if they keep playing like this.

That was a great clip. Charles was right about black athletes being held to a different standard, but in the case of Howard it really doesn't apply. Greg is right about the fans recognizing Utley's blue collar work ethic and that being the reason he doesn't get booed as much as Ryan and goes exactly the same for why #11 does't get booed as much either.
McNabb is whole different story and the worse part about it is that if Donavan comes back and tears the roof off this season, like he is supposed to, all of the racist pussies that have been shitting on him since the day he was drafted will flip flop faster than John Kerry talking about how he is the 'greatest comeback player of all time' or 'how he absorbed the said Philly mentality after all this time' or whatever the fuck...

This blog here is exactly why I feel that Philly fans are the best in the whole freakin world. Well, they're at least the most honest and realistic. The comments by theKrisheim and RyanAbrams reminds me why I love Philly.

Bryan B-
You are way off base. The folks on McNabb are of all ethnicities. In some ways it is warranted.
Good try though.

I think the most important part is that Howard Foreskin wasn't on TV last night, polluting our minds. Damn, I would have watched Sports Final if I knew that.
Fuck Eskin.

I'm sick of being told I boo people because they're not white. For the record, I have never thrown batteries at any player BESIDES a white guy. Charles, you're my 2nd favorite basketball player of all time (behind AI), and 2nd favorite current basketball commentator (behind JVG); but with all due respect, fuck off.
