Oakland Raiders news could be ready to heat up
Took a road trip to Reno on Saturday to hang with some friends and try to make a little cash in the process so I was understandably not available to keep up with the goings on of the Raiders. Normally when I have to divert my attention from staying up on the team, I come back and look for every tidbit of info I can find in order to catch up and get back on track.
After 40 Captain Morgan and Cokes and the equivalent of a twelve pack on Saturday, (and yes, we did the little Captain pose at least once, but can't fully recall when, where, or why), I was completely refreshed and ready to get back to it with the Raider news of the day. I'm biased, I must admit, but besides what Patrick has cranked out there was very little that I found to be interesting to me. I scoured it all anyway and came to the conclusion that July 23rd can't come quick enough.
Before we start getting 'real' news about and from the Raiders, we're going to be subjected to loads of thoughtful and thoughtless analysis, bias pieces that attempt to defame the Raiders, and more rumors. Here are a few of my thoughts about what's going on right now.
Is anyone confusing the SWARCO Raiders as part of the Oakland Raiders?
I think it's great that the Raiders and THE Raiders are partners and all, but it's silly to me to think that their success and appearance into the Euro Bowl has anything to do with the silver and black from Oak-Town. I want to root for them, but I find it difficult to root for a team that uses the name of the sponser, SWARCO, as part of the team name. I just don't get it, and I'm not sure I want to. Can you imagine a game between the Oracle Raiders and the Trans America 49ers? What about the Microsoft Seahawks and the Texaco Texans?
Now that the Sonics are moving, how many articles are going to remind us that the Raiders moved...then moved again?
There are many reporters that can't find anything good to say about the Raiders. It's unfortunate that when anything happens that they can relate negatively to the Raiders, they often take the opportunity to attempt to remind people that they shouldn't be Raiders fans. You guys probably saw the garbage that Monte Pool wrote Saturday. Let it go Monte, let it go. The Raiders are here, and for the seemingly foreseeable future will be here for at least another four years.
What Monte fails to mention is that Oakland's inadequate city officials have bumbled and stumbled with EVERY major sports team that they've had. The Warriors almost left and the A's are leaving. It's very difficult to feel bad for Oakland when they continue to elect officials that couldn't tell the difference between a touchdown or a home run. Alright, maybe they can tell the difference, but they don't seem to care if that difference is made in Oakland.
TFDS will be getting behind Ray Guy this year for induction into the Hall of Fame
You voted and after at least a month of tallying those votes, Ray Guy has won the support from this site. Patrick will be letting you all know the details of the vote and what's going on next, and we'll continue to keep you all in the loop. It's about time that these voters got enough flack to make them vote for a punter to be inducted.
Speaking of polls, let us know what you think by voting in our current poll. I seriously wonder why anyone would be on our site if they thought we, 'suck like a couple of vaccuum cleaners,' but we appreciate that you stopped by all the same.
Wait and see
ESPN's Bill Williamson is reporting that the Raiders have listened to those of you that have said the Raiders need to sign another defensive tackle. Supposedly, they are looking at doing just that and Williamson thinks that they may talk to Sam Adams or Grady Jackson due to their past Raider affiliations.
I'm skeptical on two fronts. The first front being that I'm not sold that either guy is good enough, can stay healthy, and be a good influence in the locker room. The second front is that I'm not so sure either guy would be fired up about coming back for near the league minimum. Guys that have had success in the league, are going to take that league minimum from a team with a better recent track record than the Raiders in hopes of getting a $100,000 ring to go with the paycheck. I hope my skepticism is for naught.
Will Nnamdi ever sign a long term contract?
I don't know yet, nor do I know if the Raiders will ever cut Lamont Jordan. When we find out or have any news on that, we'll let you know. Asomugha's tender becomes contract on July 15th, eight days prior to the start of training camp. If the Raiders want to lessen that salary on their cap, they need to sign him to a long term deal which means they probably need to let Jordan go.
Some people get really angry about my speculation, but I'm not here to tell anyone what they want to hear for the sake of doing it. Analysis and commentary are part of what we do here at TFDS, and in my analysis the Raiders seal the fate of Asomugha on July 16th. If he's signed to a long term, Asomugha can call Oakland home for the rest of his career. If he's not, then he's going to want to start making friends with head coaches around the league. Also, not signing Asomugha will be the single biggest travesty to befall the Raiders over the past six years and with nobody but themselves to blame. I like Hall, but nowhere near as much as I like Asomugha.
Lastly, if they can only get a seventh round pick in the 2012 draft for Jordan then they ought to do it. Everyone already knows the Raiders are going to dump the man, so they should get whatever they can prior to being forced to dismiss him without getting any compensation at all.
Gearing up for training camp here at TFDS

I agree with Teofila about the blitz thing. Ryan's too conservative. We have a lot of speed at LB and need to utilize it on blitzes. I think the Saints will keep Colston, but if they don't, resign Nnamdi then get Colston.

Welcome back, Rob. Glad you didn't meet the same fate that befell an unnamed wide receiver in Nevada.

greatings raiders nation. well i do agree that if al doen't sighn asomuga then he sucks. he was drafted as nobody where no one even knew his name. no you can ask any foot ball fan who are the best corners and his name pronounced correctly is always in the top 5. but who are we fooling eveyone who knows rates him the best in the league. why get hall anyway.... we had a shut down corner in house the whole time. too late for what ifs but al should have used the same trade he gave atlanta to detriot and pulled roy williams (wr), or we could have drafted him instead of the bust sitting at lft. guard in gallery. well thats it... got nothing to say more. get rid of lamont, sighn nnamdi, and just win baby!

Our Left Guard is pretty darn good. Roy Williams wasn't an option now if you're saying we should've drafted Williams instead then I'm on board with that!
Williams actually is really good even though he sucked as a fantasy player last year. Started strong - third game of the year then it was below average numbers - albeit, it was the way he was used.
I'd take him Oakland in a heartbeat!
I'm pretty pleased with our team's progress. However, we need to find the go-to WR for JRuss even though he has a TE, RB (Stable) and Curry with the ball control/possession - Find the HR Threat out of the bunch and progress this year.
Find the LT in the offseason but keep looking now. Find the last piece to the LB's this offseason but who knows what will pop up and of course D-Line - We should be really competitive in another year or two but we'll be much improved this season.
It's nice when we actually have something to look forward to! Wish we'd have kept McCown as a backup but other than that - pretty pleased with the progress.
Just Win Baby!

the people that vote 1's are people who aren't even raiders. They're probably those Chiefs fans or Broncos.

Patrick - No, I was partying, but not like that. I was partying at the tables where it's safe...usually. :-)
slick vik - That's pretty much what I was getting at about Asomugha/Hall. I totally agree about that.
teofilo dimaano - I haven't heard that about Colston, but I do like him.
KA1Z3R - I hope you're right.
Raider Blues - I agree about McCown. Stay safe out there man!
Thanks to all for coming by and checking us out.

Rob atta boy! hall is a good pick up but definately not a need. Name one better corner in the league than Nnamdi... Trufant, clements, should i even bring up chump. anyway.. i want to see some news from the wr corps. i read a while back that curry said the javon was the #1 wr and she would be a role player. to hell with that, i think that curry is the best of the group and dont be suprised if an arman shields or some one else steps up an pulls a brandon marshal on javon walker. i'm still pissed about dude loosing disapline and getting beat up in las vegas... i mean who knows the extent of his injuries. Rob i should be a writer on thins thing with you guys since we're on the same page with the Defence. we need a solid wr..... i miss timmy!

I think that Carter will pull the "Marshall" on Walker. He has everything that Walker has, but I think he'll outperform him in camp and preseason. I hope Carter usurps the role from Walker.

teofilo dimaano - Silver Legacy and Fitzgeralds. I guess winning would be relative since I think I made up for the losing at the table with all of the free drinks that I slurped up while at the tables. :-)
slick vik - It would appear that we are on the same page about Nnamdi and Hall. I think I miss Jerry a little more than Timmy though. If you want to contribute to TFDS, take a look at one of the Thoughts from a Reader's side articles and email Patrick your contribution.

I knew there was something I liked about you, Rob! I also am a Captain and Coke guy. Now I wish I had voted higher than a seven on your poll, but being a Cheesehead, I don't have a lot of cause to read about the RAY-dahs!
Glad to see you had time to write a post here...ahem.

I totally understand your point. Oracle Raiders or Boing Seahawks. But you gotta know this. In Europe football is not that big and it's hard for team's to get any money out of it. So in order to be successful in the long run, the best of them cooperate with a sponsor. NFL teams sell the rights to their stadium's name. Ever thought about that???
