Maggette Goes To Golden St.
The Golden State Warriors on Tuesday conceded defeat in the chase for Elton Brand's signature by quickly moving on to new targets and reaching a faster-than-expected verbal agreement to sign unrestricted free agent Corey Maggette, according to NBA front-office sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that Maggette decided against waiting to see if the Los Angeles Clippers would lose Brand to the Philadelphia 76ers -- which could have created an opportunity to stay with the Clippers -- to take a multi-year offer from the Warriors at a starting salary above the mid-level exception, which is expected to approach $6 million.
The Clippers, sources said, expected to respond to the departures of Brand and Maggette by making a hard run at Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith, who was Philadelphia's No. 2 target behind Brand. If the Clippers elect to sign Smith to an offer sheet, Atlanta would have seven days to match.
Will the Celtics be able to wrap up Posey? Time will tell.

DA: “Hello, James.” insert extremely kind words
Eventually, afterwards:
“Here’s the sheet, please sign.”

Well, there goes Maggette’s chance of ever winning a championship. He should have signed with the Spurs for less money. I guess once a Clipper, always a Clipper.

I knew the dominos would fall with Brand, but I didn’t realize how quickly they’d fall – I can’t keep up!

P.S. that’s way too much for Maggette – 6 years!? wow

Let’s see. Plan A was to sign Posey, but he’s sounding like too much and too many years. Plan B was Maggette, but now he’s gone. Then I think Plan C was Mickeal Pietrus, but he looks to have a deal with Orlando. So what was Plan D, Tony Allen?

That’s insane. A desperation signing.
Now, let’s get Posey inked to a four year deal, Danny. Get on it.

Oh well, if Maggette’s not coming here, at least he won’t be bolstering up the Spurs. Hopefully Posey, assuming he doesn’t stay here, will end up somewhere inconsequential, like Charlotte. Don’t want him at LA or Detroit.

too bad about maggette-he would have looked good in green. speaking of green-corey has more green than posey, but posey is the champion.

its nice to know that 2/3 of the posters here had the sense to know we better get Posey and he was plan a for them. For the other third, they musy have been watching the games on yahoo last season. Someone actually said he wanted Maggette since he didn’t want guys who cared about money, suggesting Big James was asking too much!!! rotfl!

$50mil over 5 years did you say?
Wow. Golden State just doomed itself to mediocrity for the next half a decade. This just compounds all of Mully’s recent mistakes. Jason Richardson looks real good right about now.
Does this spell doom for the Spurs?
Looking at free agency it’s hard to see them getting the supporting cast upgrade they desperately need. They could be in some serious trouble now.
James Posey’s bargaining position just went up hugely both for the Celtics and everyone else.

Who the heck is Taklamar? This whole “comment” situation really freaks me out, whether I use Safari or Firefox. (Grrr.) Anywhoozle, I’m not necessarily angry at Danny on this one, but it’s quite possible he’s simply going to get out-spent on this go-around. Never a very good wheeler-dealer when it comes to free agents, he’s a victim of circumstance.
Which is why I say, screw it. Go for Posey. Give him four not five, but I think he’ll get more money AND years elsewhere. It always seems to fall that way, doesn’t it?
Yup, Tony Allen and the wing draftees it is. I am SO bummed if we don’t get, or seriously replace, Posey, I don’t see a repeat.
So I’ll just bask in the glow of this banner. It’ll last me a long time. I was just hoping we could build something that will last, y’know?
Not over yet, but it’s starting to feel like some teams are passing us by if we don’t keep Posey.

Let me put it this way: How come Danny never gnashes his teeth over over-paying Scalabrine for five years and $3 mill, but might be unwilling to “over-pay” a proven winner at, say, worst-case scenario five years at $6 per?
I’d gladly over-pay Posey if it means a legit shot at the title for the next, say, couple seasons. We’ve already mortgaged the future, so let’s follow through and really do it. Might get another banner out of it. At this rate, I don’t see us beating the Lakers now.

Rumor says the C’s low-balled on their first offer: 3 years @ $12 million….Give Posey 4 years @ $20 million…He took a pay cut to sign here in the first place.

The C’s want to save cap room for 2010. The FA’s that year include Lebron James, and Dwayne Wade. The C’s are obligated to $44 million that year, as of right now, cuz Allen is off the books that summer. If they add more salary in the form of a contract longer than 2 years, then it has to be worth it, as it’ll eat up that space.
