Say Hello: Corey Maggette is heading to Oakland

From Janny Hu.

Well, so much for waiting. With Elton Brand officially out of the picture, league sources told the Chronicle that the Warriors have reached an agreement with free agent forward Corey Maggette on a five-year deal worth up to $50 million.

More to come ...

Still plenty of cap space. Now go get Smith and Hinrich. That would give us 50 wins.

Posted By: red_x | July 08 2008 at 06:10 PM

Looks like no new PG in our future.

Ellis, Jackson, Maggette, Harrington and Biedrins looks like our starting five, unless we make a run at Josh Smith, the only logical FA to pursue now. I really wish we went for a PG instead of Maggette...all he does shoot.

Posted By: fredbarca | July 08 2008 at 06:14 PM

deal works out 2 ways: 1-leaves baron with hardly a player to pass to KARMA, 2-Warriors get a player that can shoot and allows them rooom to trade another player or even get josh smith.

Posted By: datashark | July 08 2008 at 06:15 PM

Say it ain't so...Maggette is garbage! Waist of money!

Posted By: edrock | July 08 2008 at 06:16 PM

The building blocks are starting I guess.
Gotta start some where...

Posted By: sonomajoe2001 | July 08 2008 at 06:16 PM

There won't be enough basketballs on the floor for Magette, Ellis and Jackson. Even if the W's get a star point guard, you still got a shooting, soft defense starting 5 with no power forward.

Posted By: Grubber2 | July 08 2008 at 06:17 PM

Can't get enough good players and Maggette's good - he can give you what Pietrus was supposed to deliver, with a more refined offensive game.

Look for the Warriors to get Lee Tinsley as a FA pretty cheap - he's a bulky PG who will pair well with Monta.

Posted By: ds4 | July 08 2008 at 06:18 PM

This is a horrible deal. Maggette is more injury prone than Baron, and is not a needed piece. the Warriors needed a PF or a PG, plain and simple. This is devastating.

Posted By: operationwayne | July 08 2008 at 06:21 PM

Might as well of kept j-rich for just about the same deal.

Posted By: edrock | July 08 2008 at 06:28 PM

What a waste of money! We needed a PG or a Center. What did we get? Another Forward who doesn't play defense, not a leader, injury prone, and a guy who won't make the rest of the team better.

Posted By: mudwaters | July 08 2008 at 06:30 PM

I don't understand why people are underestimating Monte? He is going to turn heads this year. And at power foward we have B Wright, Harrington and our rook. Maggette will be better everyone sucks when they go to the Clippers. If we get Josh Smith....Championship

Posted By: G21Mo11 | July 08 2008 at 06:32 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Worst signing EVER!

Posted By: Big_Suede | July 08 2008 at 06:33 PM

Should have gotten Livingston as well, the orthopods are gonna need more work now that Hardin is gone. Perfect Nellie guy, all shoot no D. Sniff, Sniff, anyone else smell panic on Mully

Posted By: Lott4Prez | July 08 2008 at 06:33 PM

getting josh smith is now key. we can salvage this mess and have a good team for years if we can bring smith to oakland. and then swap al for hinrich. i'd say a starting five of monta, hinrich, jack, smith, and biedrins could compete in the west. and with maggette, BW, watson, bellinelli, randolph in the rotation. randolph's a long shot to see minutes under nelly but that's still a good 8-9 deep.

Posted By: MCJackintheBox | July 08 2008 at 06:38 PM

If you didn't sign Maggette that money goes away
cause you got to sign Ellis and Biedrins to extensions
that carry you over the cap.
Josh Smith is a pipe dream Atlanta is going to match most any offer.
So Warriors sign a decent player with money they only have till they sign their own RFA's.
Trades for Heinrich or Tinsley are the other options
course Tinsley is hurt all the time.

Posted By: jimguelda | July 08 2008 at 06:42 PM

this is just the first of many steps (better be!) I'm sure. Panic move? Yes No D? Yes But now we have Maggettee and can trade Harrington/others for a point guard. Lets give the Warriors some time. Nothing is official till 7/8/08 and then we'll have a better look at things. As hard as it may be...we have to give things more time to develop. what other teams do might free up some players the Warriors could use.

Posted By: sonomajoe2001 | July 08 2008 at 06:46 PM

I hope Mullie remembers that we need money for Monte and Biedrins instead of wasting the cap room on a Forward we don't really need!

Posted By: mudwaters | July 08 2008 at 06:48 PM

MISTAKE!!! panic move. maybe bd will want to come back to w's now! LOL
give him 2 years...

Posted By: itsinthegame1 | July 08 2008 at 07:02 PM

we may have to face a certain reality. no one wants to play in oakland. Brand took a deal for less cash, and i can only assume josh smith hasn't been on the radar because he has no intention of coming to the bay - why else would mullin not go after him? maggette, on the other hand, took the offer because no one else was foolish enough to offer him 5 years.

Posted By: kristakahashi | July 08 2008 at 07:07 PM

well, for perspectives sake, maggette is certainly an upgrade from air france, and that's really what this is on almost every level (cap space, position, playing time). he averaged almost 23 points and 5 boards a game last year, and MP's numbers were like 7 and 5. an upgrade.

Posted By: MCJackintheBox | July 08 2008 at 07:11 PM

Yo Baron, tell me how my ass tastes...Sincerely, Elton Brand.

Posted By: wheelsup351 | July 08 2008 at 07:14 PM

IT doesn't seem like a terrible investment. He was signed for a reasonable price (it appears) as just over the mid-level exception. Since he can score, he becomes a trade option in future deals, especially after he flurishes ppg-wise under Nellie this year. The 5 year contract for an injury prone player is what worries me, however. Wasn't that why we did not give BD an extension?

Posted By: wisdomcow | July 08 2008 at 07:20 PM

We traded JRich beause he had a 50 million contract...dumb W management

Posted By: lineup32 | July 08 2008 at 07:24 PM

Yee of little faith!
Short memory? Who had the most unproductive bench vying for the playoffs on the West Coast this year?
Maggette = 6th man of the year.
Next get me Brent Barry to replace Pietrus
Finally get me a PG by trading big Al Harrington and throwing some money at a signing.

Posted By: Spiritman41 | July 08 2008 at 07:28 PM

WHY DONT WE GO AFTER JOSH SMITH..COREY MAGETTE IS NOT A GOOD PICK UP...I VE BEEN A WARRIOR FAN FOR A LONG TIME AND EVERYTIME THEY ALWAYS GET RID OF THE GOOD PLAYERS GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS ARE A CAMP FOR GOOD PLAYERS TO GET BETTER AND THEN GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Posted By: CHUBS123 | July 08 2008 at 07:33 PM

It looks like Mully essentially traded JRich for Maggette and Wright. How's Maggette's handle? That's the one thing that always bugged me about JRich's game.

Posted By: bloggo | July 08 2008 at 07:34 PM

I can live with this deal. Maggette can score and is a solid defensive player. A major upgrade over Pietrus who can fill some of the scoring void BD left. I'm still not convinced Ellis is starting point guard material. Someone serviceable like Hinrich would be a nice safety net. Assuming Ellis and Biedrins are re-signed, and Wright and Belinelli start to contribute, they could be right back into position to contend for the 7th or 8th seed.

Posted By: clandestine32 | July 08 2008 at 07:34 PM

Maggette? Gone. Brand? Gone. How do you like my Clips now, der Baron?

Posted By: Lastcall | July 08 2008 at 07:35 PM

earl boykins is coming back as our pg. ha ha

Posted By: sonomajoe2001 | July 08 2008 at 07:37 PM

Stephen Marbury to the warriors and david lee for Harrington and Azubuike

Posted By: datashark | July 08 2008 at 07:42 PM

not going to hate on this deal. the guy averaged 22 pts per game, also has a good FT% and for a slasher that is very important. the warriors arent done, so all you fans hating on this move, be patient.

Posted By: cedrickvp | July 08 2008 at 07:48 PM

Let's see, they need a point and a 4 and they get a 3. Am I missing something here??? Granted Maggette is a good player but he takes away needed cap space. I smell a trade now because as I see it, Harrington is now expendable.

Posted By: lundberg | July 08 2008 at 07:48 PM

i ca

Posted By: stlkr | July 08 2008 at 07:50 PM

I can live w/ this right now...

Posted By: stlkr | July 08 2008 at 07:52 PM

Maggette is the softest small forward EVER. Most of his points come in garbage time. The clippers have tried to offload him in trades for the last three years and couldnt because no one wanted him. He is not much of a player. I will say it, Pietrus is a better small than Maggette, at least he played defense.

Posted By: Big_Suede | July 08 2008 at 07:53 PM

I hope it is only rumor. It is not worth to waste the money when other teams were offering him at most 6 million per year.

can someone explain what happens if Warriors do not sing anyone? what do we lose?

Posted By: virtual12 | July 08 2008 at 07:54 PM

Ok big suede (aka Baron davis) dont get so mad.

Posted By: stlkr | July 08 2008 at 07:55 PM

At least Maggette will hit his free throws. This team cannot shoot free throws, now at least someone can.

Posted By: sfnative22 | July 08 2008 at 07:57 PM

I cant understand why so many of you are against Maggette. Warriors do need a pointguard but there are no worth while FA's to choose from at this time and Maggette is availible and looks to be the only guarantee the Warriors had to choose from. With the loss of David Warriors need more experience and this is something Maggette has. Keep in mind its no secret that the Warriors are looking to trade Harrington for a pointguard in which case Maggette will help. Now the Warriors have a few options including Ben Gordon who the Bulls are hinting at trading over Hinrich as well as possibly getting Raymond Felton from Charlotte. Even a trade with the desperate NY Nicks is an option for Jamal Crawford. Seriously guys loosing David hurts but at least we have a good chance to fill 2 places with our salary cap room instead of just replacing David. And hey I say give the Reins to Ellis and see if he can step up, worst case he cant and he'll be ready quicker for next year.

Posted By: esper579 | July 08 2008 at 08:04 PM

Maggette does not excite me very much.

Posted By: demarco | July 08 2008 at 08:13 PM

This is a poor signing. We were not a playoff team without Maggatte, and we're not one with him. All this does is hamper our ability to sign a monster next year. We need a difference maker without Davis and this is certainly not him. Mullin apparently didnt learn from his J-rich ,Dunleavy, Murphy signings

Posted By: jquint83 | July 08 2008 at 08:16 PM

Mully you and Billy Beane are having a bad day!

Posted By: tab25 | July 08 2008 at 08:17 PM

Maggette doesn't excite because he's never played
for a winner and the year Clips made playoffs he was hurt most of the year.
But the Warriors lose the cap space as soon as they sign Biedrins and Ellis if they didn't spend it, it just goes away because those contracts will put them over the cap.
Josh Smith is not going anywhere Atlanta can match,
he's not a UFA.
They added a somewhat decent piece to their puzzle he's a better scorer than Pietrus.

Posted By: jimguelda | July 08 2008 at 08:21 PM

Hey, Mullin, you suck.

Posted By: frmrsubscriber | July 08 2008 at 08:23 PM

I guess the best thing I can say is that this serves Baron right for waiting for the last minute to dump the Ws. He will have no one to pass to in clipper land and only his movie deals...have fun playing 9th fiddle to kobe and the lakers...

Posted By: wakeupalive | July 08 2008 at 08:40 PM

Warriors signing Maggette is really "par" for the course here in the Bay Area these days. Honestly, I think Chris Mullin and Brian Sabean are one in the same.

Do fans realize that in the past six or seven months Mullin's main acquisitions have been C.J. Watson, Chris Webber and Corey Maggette? Where's the accountability?

Warriors can redeem themselves if they can swing a deal for Josh Smith, but it will never happen because ATL can match all offers. In all likelihood, you'll see a Josh Childress signing and a FA pickup such as a Jamal Tinsley. There's plenty of "average" PG's available, so fans shouldn't be mad that the W's didn't get one in trade. Don't root for Heinrich either because he couldn't guard his own shadow.

Posted By: Mikita | July 08 2008 at 08:41 PM

Losing Baron Davis and gaining Corey Maggette seems a lot like taking one step forward and three steps back!

Posted By: cptjohnsmith | July 08 2008 at 08:42 PM

Nelly should just retire back to Maui and move on while we still have good memories of his final stint here. Mullin is an incompetent loser and hes in way over his head. As the team slides back into the top of the lottery again, we can always remember the last time they made the playoffs and the year they just missed. These two years were a pretty good two years. Remember how the arena rocked when we beat Dallas. Winning, we hardly knew ye. Now, who will come in and fail miserably as the next Coach? Sam Vincent is in Reno looking for work this week.

Posted By: frmrsubscriber | July 08 2008 at 08:48 PM

Mullen please come through. If you do not sign Jsmith keep the money sign monte and Biedris and go for Bosh next year

Posted By: RRGSW | July 08 2008 at 08:48 PM

Mullin - go after Andre Miller - he's got the same build as Baron but is a better shooter - get a reliable 3-point shooter - Brent Barry. Sign Monta and Biedrins and Barnes (get him cheap) . Ws will be 7th or 8th seed in '09. Get ready for Nellie's departure and sign Avery. Think ahead!

Posted By: jEAST | July 08 2008 at 08:49 PM

I went to the Clippers game early in the season and we were literally yelling "ball hog" with Maggette. All he did was shoot the ball whenever he got it. I can't believe the Warriors, with all their options, chose a ball hog.

Posted By: watsdamattau | July 08 2008 at 09:01 PM

I hope the person who wants Stephon Marbury is simply smoking something. I live in NYC. Nobody consider such a horrible idea.

Monta is NOT going to flourish as a PG. He's a shooter and a finisher, not a leader and a passer.

We need a true PG. Maggette doesn't fit that role. Argh.

Posted By: masaya | July 08 2008 at 09:09 PM

Bad day for Bay Area sports: first, BB gives away Rich Harden (tossing in Gaudin for free); then, Mully pays $50 for a guy who can't pass, doesn't rebound and won't play defense. And herre we thought Mully had smartened up with the dollars (and sense).

Posted By: jsl | July 08 2008 at 09:15 PM

Magette doesn't have to be passer - he'll fit in nicely with Nellie's system: No D, loves to score, rebound a little. One area he won't fit in - he's got a good FT avg.

Posted By: jEAST | July 08 2008 at 09:56 PM

Magette has looked really good agaisnt the Warriors. Shooting lights out. He should upgrade the team outside shooting. Still need a point guard.

Posted By: hoopfan | July 08 2008 at 10:16 PM

I hate this signing. Should make a play for Josh Smith and Hinrich. Smith is 22 and an athletic freak and affects shots in the paint. Hinrich provides a decent alternative to Ellis until he can handle running the point.
Here's what Maggette will give you ... 20+, not a lot of defense ... wait, sounds like the rest of the Warriors.
If we had no shot at Smith/Hinrich/et. al, save the money, play the kids (God forbid Nelly) and be a player in the 2009 free agent market, or wait till 2010 and go after Bosh.
Bottom line, does Maggette get the Warriors back to the playoffs? No.

Posted By: lysander99 | July 08 2008 at 10:17 PM

Bad day for Bay Area sports? The A's maybe. Harden, wow. Magette, I think he's gonna be okay. I just gotta see what else kinda movement Mully has up his sleeve. I agree a move should be made for a Guard, Power Forward and even a vet center. Hopefully after signing Ellis and Biedrins, the Warriors still have some substantial funds for at least 1 more "quality" player. BAD DAY? ask a Clipper fan, you think Baron will get all the love out there? yeah, right, welcome home...

Posted By: nakedflip | July 08 2008 at 10:19 PM

No D, only concerned about himself. Classic Maggette moment: He hoists up a miss, then, instead of getting back on defense, he sulks for a few moments at the miss, then slowly jogs back to the other end, as his man scores on a layup.

Good luck Ws!

Posted By: jimjoyce25 | July 08 2008 at 10:20 PM

Pathetic. The warriors did exactly what they should not have: panic. They signed a mediocre player for way too much money who has no logical place in their roster. A return to the old retarded Warriors - a sad day.

Posted By: jdubsf | July 08 2008 at 10:41 PM

I just wish we could get more money trading Don Nelson somewhere. Avery, anyone?

Posted By: nakedflip | July 08 2008 at 10:42 PM

w's still needing a true PG to maximize Monta's offense

Posted By: lunar6x | July 08 2008 at 10:47 PM

The Warriors were throwing up bricks the whole second half of the season last year. With the addition of Magette they will be much improved offensively. He's a go-to-guy, like Jack. Inasfar as point guard is concerned, they got Monta, and CJ Watson, both of whom can shoot the lights out too. Perhaps we will miss BD's passing and floor leadership, but the Warriors will be improved offensively. The name of the game is puting the ball in the hoop.

Posted By: rewoulfe | July 08 2008 at 10:49 PM

Warriors should have gone after Josh Smith with the max, hope its too rich for ATL to match. Trade Harrington for Hinrich, sign Monta, let Andris go. Then they can go after an ACTUAL franchise FA like Melo, Bosh, Dwade, etc, or they have the money to sign BWright or the Rook if either turn out to be good. How do you sign Biedrins as a cornerstone and have two other skinny athletic 6'10" dudes who can't shoot coming up in the org?? Makes no sense..

Posted By: jdubsf | July 08 2008 at 10:53 PM

Of the talked-about possible options, I see Maggette as the worst of the bunch by far (Brand, BD, AZ, JShmoove, AI2, Deng, a brilliant trade). He has no place in Nellie's offense, adds nothing not already there, and has proven to be a me-first player.

I would much prefer they go into next year with the young guys. Yes, the cap space is gone after they sign Dris and Young Tay Tay to long term deals, but that's counteracted if they take short term risks on lesser players that can work in Nellie's system. I'd rather have Eddie House or Brent Barry for half the money. Livingston or Arroyo for a tiny fraction of the money.

Maggette is going to get his money, play injured for three years until his next contract drive, and ruin the W's flexibility for years. Garbage.

Posted By: sleepyfloyd | July 08 2008 at 11:01 PM

I just wanna call....Barrrooon, Barrrronnn, Barroooon....so what's up with you huh, Mr. Davis?

Posted By: al9er4ever | July 08 2008 at 11:13 PM

I solved the point guard problem. A lot of fans have pointed out that Ellis might not transition into point guard. Ok, I wrestled with this dilema. Here is the solution: Mullin, push all your chips into the middle of the table and go all in; gamble that The Warriors will be able to draft Pat Mills from St. Mary's in next years draft. That would be sweet.

Posted By: kevinmitchelfan | July 08 2008 at 11:21 PM

How about giving Mullin a chance to finish forming the roster for '08 / '09 before coming unglued? You guys who are excoriating Mullin over the Magette signing are doing so with incomplete information and are running the risk of looking like jackasses. Of course, given the content of your postings, I'm sure you're all quite used to that by now.

Posted By: exgolfer | July 08 2008 at 11:30 PM

You all think the Warriors have to conform to the pieces a normal nba team uses. The Warriors are run, pass and score and need skinny long players who can score. That is what Maggette does. Will he change the parts of his game that don't fit the Warrior's style is the question! the answer is you get shipped out if you don't, ie. Murphy, Diogu and Dunleavy. Maggette is a proven commodity that Mullin and Nelson know very well, and like. They signed him for a 5 year deal because he won't have to be the GoTo guy here, but a piece of the puzzle. Isn't the goal to get interchangeable pieces, run at full speed and keep subbing and wear out the other team? This last year, with limited rotation the Dubs got worn out. With more pieces that doesn't happen. Maggette lets them keep the pressure on the other team. I think they overpaid, but when you see max deals going out to some of these players that don't deserve it, at least Maggette represents value. I checked out 82games.com and Maggette's numbers are all positive, on a losing team. He made the team better when he was on the court and they were worse when he was off the court. That's the real statistic. You get a team of all positive number players and you have the Basketball equivilent of Moneyball.

Posted By: tothewall | July 08 2008 at 11:37 PM

It does seem this move is mostly a Mully save-face move. Watching Philly swoop in and snag Brand musta hurt a bit, and they had this set up a consolation prize to try to keep GS from losing further respect in the league. Of course the fact that they signed the definitive mid-level exception guy for nearly double in $ and years is classic W's suckerism. After trying to play big and low-ball BD, they went back to their gullible ways. Pietrus was signed for half, but would have given more than half CM can. True, CM can fill it up, especially in torrents off the bench, which is useful. But he duplicates Jack in almost every respect except for passing, which means he has to be a bench assassin and cant play team ball. Pietrus may have come off retarded many times, but fueled team ball with raw, fast-break feeding D that he could also finish. Azuibuike already gives us a great guy off the bench, and both these guys are the humble dudes to CM diva. Of course, some of that is just the nature of star power which I don't doubt Nellie can find a way to harness if he doesn't kick him to the end of the bench. But this is more silly trickery and not real hoops; what we we're supposed to be moving up towards. Although I was never a big fan,I gotta say I like the A.Miller idea to remedy this new ill (for AH?). I hear Philly somehow wants to dump him and we should be all over it (though not sure they want AH for him). With one of the best alley-oop tossers and fast-break leaders, Maggette might even get in the warriors swing and discover himself. Or, maybe we through him in too and cop AM and AI2 for some real shabangin showtime. AM,ME,SJ,AI2,AB,BW, KA,AR,MB: that's still a skinny bunch of push-arounds, but at least a classic Nelly fast and athletic team of facilitators, finishers, with just enough outside shooting to keep the floor spread. Since AM has just as much D as BD, the tempo stays the same and we don't miss a beat.

Posted By: illish | July 09 2008 at 12:11 AM

I think CJ Watson has a chance to start at point guard. Watson can shoot the lights out - 26 ppg in the D-League, and he's a pretty good passer
too. Don't count Watson out. He didn't play much last season, but when he did he looked pretty good.

Posted By: rewoulfe | July 09 2008 at 12:17 AM

For their position, of the Memphis guards, Lowry was on the court 53%, Conley 35% and Crittenton 13%.
Of the three, Crittenton had a Roland Rating of +/- of +2.2, Lowry -.2 and Conley -4.6.
Felton was on the court 75% for his position and had a +/- of +1.6 and the 76ers Miller had a -.5
Of the available guard choices, Felton is the guard that is an experienced plus player. His team does better when he's on the court and worse when he's not on the court. Surprisingly, Crittenton had a higher rating, but he hardly played.
Statistics from 82games.com

Posted By: tothewall | July 09 2008 at 12:30 AM

Continued-
Baron Davis, a premier player, had a +/- of +5.7, Ellis +4.6 and CJ Watson -1.2
We could improve over Watson, but he may grow into the role in this his second year. Looking forward to the Summer League.

Posted By: tothewall | July 09 2008 at 12:35 AM

I forgot to mention, Maggette's rating beats them all, +6.5, but he's not a point.

Posted By: tothewall | July 09 2008 at 12:39 AM

what everyone fails to realize is that we retain the most dynamic player in the NBA next season. Monta is going to explode into a mega star. No more Baron to bail us out, and much like Steve Young, Monta will take the reigns and take over and make the Warriors his team. The only one who ever stops Monta is Monta himself...

Posted By: buzzword | July 09 2008 at 01:08 AM

Ok everyone chill out Corey is a quality sign… he is a Don Nelson type player who is big enough and athletic enough to play the 4.... Josh Smith is probably out of the picture but whatever. Now trade AL for a PG... Getting Ronnie from LA would be another quality sign

PG?

SG Ellis

SF Jackson

PF Corey

C AB

What is wrong with that?

We run up and down there will be plenty of shots for everyone don’t trip

PG?

SG K B hopefully

SF Marco

PF Wright/ Ronnie/ Jimmy

C Kosta or another player

That is 6 quality big men that is solid

lets just sit back and watch Chris Mullin isn't done yet

Posted By: Crippled1 | July 09 2008 at 01:18 AM

i see this team being near cap and sucking again. Maggette and Turiaf will cost about $14m a year? They should have stay cool and go into season with cap room for a max player and a chance to get top five pick. Combined that and they get a legit chance to contend, but now, they are spending money, losing cap space so they can suck. Sometimes doing nothing is better than reacting.

Posted By: PeeDiddy | July 09 2008 at 01:25 AM

naw I dont agree with doing nothing.... you now have an up and coming core... we dont need another draft pick...

Turiaf is a guy we need A GUY WHO CAN BANG....

why is everyone hatin on Corey? he is a 20 point scorer... in the W's system he has no choice but to dunk.... shot selection will improve....

Posted By: Crippled1 | July 09 2008 at 01:35 AM

Why would a guy go to the 76ers for less money who has sights on a film career ? Did his agent tell him there is bad water in Oakland or real estate is high ?

Posted By: slugger1 | July 09 2008 at 01:55 AM

The Warriors will not be happy until they start 5 swing players. They needed a point guard. How many forwards are they going to accumulate?

Posted By: zorro7 | July 09 2008 at 02:36 AM

I don't know why W's fans are so worried. Magette's stats are better than BD's. He scores more with 4 less shots per game. He gets to the foul line almost 4 more times per game, shooting for a higher FT% and netting 3 more per game. He isn't prone to throwing up 3-pt bricks, taking an average of 6 pergame less tham Baron. He will fit in nicely with the W's fast breaking style of play, providing far more stability from the 3 spot than Pietrus or Barnes provided !!!

If Wright, Belinelli, and Randolph can provide 6-10 PPG each, the W's will be potent. The rookies and Wright will help to strengthen the front line defense, too, offering better shot blocking and low post presence.

Mullie needs to obtain another PG to help run the club. If CJ Watson can provide improved play, that would be a plus, because there is a much better crop of Free Agents available next season and the Warriors can clear cap room fairly easily.

I hope Nellie plays the young guys early. Even with their inexperience, we won't equal last year's start and the legs on the floor will be younger adn fresher at the end of the season.

Hey, Baron ... enjoy playing for the Clips without anyone to pass to !!! Brand played you, dude. Guess you'll have all the time you need for your Hollywood projects by December !!!!

Posted By: ukrainian | July 09 2008 at 03:34 AM

I'm glad Brand is a Sixer now, Davis will now probably be on the IL for half the year. I don't know how I feel about the Magette signing yet. I've always thought of him as a second rate Kobe Bryant. We'll see...

Posted By: nativedave | July 09 2008 at 06:02 AM

Hey---the dealing isn't over. Maggette scores some of the "Baron" points, and Pietrus' exit makes room to sign "some dude" in the middle---ha, ha---so what!

Posted By: joeturftoe | July 09 2008 at 06:37 AM

Hey, Mully, dont lose hope, Mike Montgomery could probably be lured back with a fat guarantee when Nelly quits in disgust. Got it, loser?

Posted By: frmrsubscriber | July 09 2008 at 06:59 AM

Maggette is another Mullin example of overspending. He can't play any D, is injury-prone, and his scoring average is overexaggerated because he played on a terrible team last year that was missing key offensive players.

The Warriors are a team that will pick in the 9th-14th range in the draft once again.

Mullin should be fired and Cohan should sell.

Posted By: paddyo49 | July 09 2008 at 07:50 AM

So now there's 2 Al Harringtons? Well, I've seen worse.

Posted By: bowser | July 09 2008 at 07:56 AM

I was a big fan of the two Corey's (Corey Haim & Corey Feldman) in the 80's so anybody who spells Corey w/ and "E" is alright by me!

Posted By: Tekguy17 | July 09 2008 at 08:15 AM

"Courses for horses, people !!!" I don't understand why all the negative comments by fair-weather fans regarding Magette? Hell, he scored 21 a night in Dunleavy's miserable system and he did it by slashing to the hoop and foregoing the THREE ... something the W's could stand a helluva lot more of !!!

The W's lost 20 games last season by 9 points or less. In 5 of those games, they lost by 5 or less and in each they missed more than than TWICE as many FT's as the point differential. In 11 of those games, they heaved up 21-31 3-point MISSES !!! These are as good as a turnover. Cut that number by 10, taking higher percentage shots, hitting 45% and you have your 9 points per game !! In 11 of these losses, Baron's TO's + Missed 3's totaled between 10-13 ... that's 3 empty possessions each and every quarter !! That won't be missed much !!!

Corey will fit the system well. I don't think Brand cared to join the TRACK MEET ... too many doughnuts on that frame !! He can't run the floor like Biedrins, Wright, or Randolh who are greyhounds !!

Look for Corey to continue at 20-22 ppg ... Monta probably scores as he did down the stretch this year and raises his average to 25-27 ppg. Jax will give us 20 ... AB will add 10 pts and 10 RB's per night. K.Az, Wright, Belinelli, Randolph, and Big Al are all good for 6-10 ppg and are each capable of a breakout night. If we keep Austin, he's icing on the cake.

I like that we've become taller and more athletic in the front court. If Mullie can swing a trade for a PG or "space eater" on the low block, all the better, but without that, a serviceable PG picked up for this season will be all we need. Give the young guys more minutes and let them play their way to the bench. I think they are all capable of surprising people.

Posted By: ukrainian | July 09 2008 at 08:27 AM

With Magette, Turiaf - it's going to be Showtime NorCal style next year ... play the sophs and the rooks ... get a decent PG ... and it's on to the playoffs *7th seed ... then make a play for Bosh the next year .... it'll be like Boston ... enjoy the journey

Posted By: jEAST | July 09 2008 at 08:41 AM

I like the move. I like the offer to Turiaf as well. We are filling needs with quality players, though at a high price. Now for a point guard, Duhon would've been nice as a pass first, defensive minded player. A suggestion for who we may acquire on the cheap- how about bringing back speedy claxton (fast, good passer) or take a shot at shaun livingston (with BD in town, he may not even see the court with a good knee).

Posted By: bonbrillio | July 09 2008 at 09:07 AM

The secret of a winning team is simple: A winning team has a caring owner who's smart enough to hire a GM or a coach who knows how to put a winning team together. The Warriors don't have that. They've never had that since they came to the Bay Area. And they will never have that.

Posted By: catmandu | July 09 2008 at 09:55 AM

All I want to add is: Ha ha Jim Rome, you poseur Clippers fan who thought you were boss 'cause you got BD, and thought you were funny ripping NoCal in your lame radio broadcasts. How you like the Warriors now, loser? SoCal still sucks and forever will. Good thing you're a Clippers season ticket holder, huh? Everyone knows you're not good enough or respected enough to get Lakers season tickets. Now go put out that fire.

Posted By: spambait11 | July 09 2008 at 10:03 AM

I don't get all the negativity. For $10MM a year Maggette is a huge upgrade to headcase / whiner Pietrus who isn't worth anywhere near $6MM. He goes to the rim and shoots a lot of free throws and he makes them. No more heaving 3 pointers please, that's not basketball. This is a good signing. Baron is gone, deal with it, time to move on.

Posted By: bearz | July 09 2008 at 10:06 AM

I don't understand why people think Al Harrington will bring us something of value. He's not that great, he already wants out of here, and the Warriors have shopped him around several times to no avail. The Bulls would never trade Gordon for Harrington. What other tradeable pieces of value do the Warriors have?
Face it, the Warriors will probably not be a playoff team again next year, so let's start scouting for thin left handed 4's in college so we can stock up again.

Posted By: leezer | July 09 2008 at 10:11 AM

This sucks...why is that the Warriors insist on a surplus of small forward/ 2 guard types? It's already getting ugly..i can't imagine another dude like harrington that doesn't rebound doesn't play defense and justs shoots the ball. I just hope that Brandan Wright and Bellineli see the playing time Nelson said he'd give them-that's pretty much all I have to look forward now.

Posted By: bakedzito | July 09 2008 at 10:39 AM

I think it speak volumes about Baron that he would leave the up and coming Warriors to play for the Clippers -what's going to be a last place team. Apparently the focus for Baron is his Hollywood pals. Now that he's in in LA he'll better positioned to attend Kate Hudson parties. I guess the thrill of attending Hollywood parties trumps playing for a good team, a team that's on it's way up.

Posted By: rewoulfe | July 09 2008 at 10:45 AM

An expensive guard from LA signed by the Warriors with good FT percentage, no defense, and not a passer. Megette or Derek Fisher ...take your pick...

Posted By: frmrsubscriber | July 09 2008 at 10:49 AM

Id take Maggette + Turiaf over BD. BD was great while he lasted, but its clear BD may not be able to coexist with a growing super star in Monta. Lets get another guy or 2 to deepen the bench and get the Dubs excitement going.

Posted By: kurt_slave | July 09 2008 at 10:55 AM

This signing is great! We need shooting depth as well, guys come off the bench and nobody can shoot, and don't you think his (corey's) ball hogging will be a bit curbed under nellie? We can do without a PG until one presents itself, it's time for M&M, the monte-marco show to step up anyway! We're so close to being contenders, let's not throw in the towel just yet naysayers! What happened to "WE BELIEVE" ?

Posted By: trifire | July 09 2008 at 11:03 AM

Right now the Warriors are once again going nowhere. Very discouraging.

Posted By: YiorgosM | July 09 2008 at 11:08 AM

I look at this way, Turiaf is replacing Barnes, I'd take Turiaf Magette is replacing Pietrus, great trade-off. Should we stand pat and wait for that 2010 FA class... Franchise players, Wade, Lebron, Bosh... I'd hate to be Mully next season.

Posted By: dubfan7478 | July 09 2008 at 11:19 AM

Just to finish off my comment,,, We still need to replace BD but, should the Warriors hold off until that 2010 FA class???

Posted By: dubfan7478 | July 09 2008 at 11:20 AM

Anything more than the MLE is too much to pay Maggette. No D. Not a team player. He can slash and shoot, but is that worth more than the MLE?

Posted By: Tez | July 09 2008 at 11:37 AM

At first I was pissed, but Maggette's a good fit. He's a big 2, can post up, shoots decently and (most importantly) gets to the line often. It's on Monte to improve his handle, plus Jackson will be a point forward. Losing Baron was awful, but for $10MM a year, we picked up a 28 year old Vince Carter clone. As for Josh Smith, please. That kid is a cancer waiting to ruin a franchise, and he'd cost us $14MM a year. I'd be down with Omeka, but then who would be a reliable scoring option? Adding Turiaf would be a huge move for us, but what about Najera?

Posted By: jdauphi | July 09 2008 at 11:51 AM

The Warriors are pathetic. I am not renewing my season tickets. Think of it -> GS offers more money than the 76ers and still get rejected. GS offers a deal to Gilbert Arenas and get rejected. GS low-ball's Baron Davis because they think he will never leave and he leaves.
NBA insiders around the league never for one second thought Brand would consider the Warriors. I call that a negative stigma of what is a pathetic franchise that makes one bad decision after another and does not know how to placate stars. GS traded Webber, he goes on to success with Washington/Sacramento. GS traded Sprewell and he goes on to the title series with the Knicks. GS traded Mitch Richmond for Billy Owens. GS traded Tim Hardaway for Bimbo Coles - the list goes on and on and on.
It doesn't matter who is in the front office - there is a culture of losing and ineptitude that has plagued this franchise for over a decade.
Chris Cohan - sell the team. The new owner should hire Jerry West to run the operation and we will have success. Our current direction will lead nowhere.
Mark my words - the Warriors will overpay mid-level free agents so they won't take a total negative PR hit here in the Bay (this was written before I found out about Corey Maggette's overpriced deal and Rony Turiaf's potential deal). Too late you suck a** Warriors. Let's hear more lame excuses from Chris Mullin!!

Posted By: jzsingh1 | July 09 2008 at 12:00 PM

I would rather have Brand, but I like the signing. Maggette does a few things for the W's.
1. He is able to score in the post, something the W's need desperately.
2. He gets to the line and shoots almost 82% for his career.
3. He DOES play D

Posted By: faz | July 09 2008 at 12:00 PM

Nellie will most likely produce a winning and entertaining basketball team. I'm looking forward to the final lineup but the Warriors will have a decent chance at making the playoffs in a very tough conference.Thank the basketball gods that Nellie came back to the W's. It's been fun ever since.

Posted By: mjgpromo | July 09 2008 at 12:06 PM

Baron davis recieved his karma plate.
LET'S SEE HIM NOW, HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED.
IT'S TOO BAD THAT MOST OF THE COMMENTS ON HERE ARE SO NEGATIVE TOWARDS wARRIORS MANAGEMENT. MAYBE YOU ALL SHOULD TRY AND DO MULLINS JOB. THE LAST 2 YEARS OF WARRIORS BBALL HAS BEEN SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING BBALL I'VE SEEN IN YEARS AND ALL I HEAR IS HOW3 BAD THEY HAVE HANDLED THESE LATEST MOVES.
I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEW YEAR AND A CHANCE TO SUPPORT THIS TEAM.

Posted By: realnews4u | July 09 2008 at 12:11 PM

Painful, $50 million over 5 years? Why did we outbid ourselves? The Clips offered 8.5 million per year to him. The 76ers and Grizzlies aren't bidding for his services. Everyone else tops out at 5.6-5.8 mil for the mid-level.

Why was this a good deal?

It pretty much ups the price for Monta and Bierdiens as well meaning the warriors are going to be capped out without franchise player. If we're going to suck, at least don't pick up other people's trash!

Posted By: splinters | July 09 2008 at 12:13 PM

what a bunch a whiners here. holy cow. now i know why whenever i want to read intelligent conversation on the W's, i go to gsom... lol... the fact that many of you have conveniently forgotten is that aside from brand, there really aren't ANY superstar UFA's to be signed. how are the W's gonna sign smith or iggy or whomever when they're RFA's and their respective teams have pledged to match any offer? they can't and won't. it makes little sense to target them. any offer to an RFA immediately freezes money and counts against cap space until the deal is rejected or signed, which could be more than a week while the RFA's team decides whether to match the offer. atl and phil are playoff teams, you think they're gonna let their best players just waltz outta town? crazy.
the W's are a young team and have a solid, young base. we needed to replace boom's scoring and we have with maggs and the certain emergence of bwright.
if you want to complain about something, i suggest heading over to the niners blog, where its at a premium.

Posted By: ninersdubs | July 09 2008 at 12:28 PM

Corey and Turiaff????? Are the Warriors really going to be as good as last year let alone have the chance to make the playoffs in the already very strong Western division? Definitely not with these two guys. The Warriors need to resign Baron Davis and entice him to come back now that Brand is leaving and we need to make a run for Josh Smith. If Baron Davis is out of the question we need to push for Josh Smith. We are dieing for a big man and Turiaff will bring us nooooo offense maybe a shot block and a rebound here and there...The Maguette signing won't seem as bad as long as we land a good quality big man that can score and rebound and Josh Smith is that big man...

Posted By: angelitosf | July 09 2008 at 12:39 PM

I AGREE WITH ANGELITOSF - BRING BACK BD, $15MIL PER YEAR - 2 YEAR DEAL. AND MATCH ANY OFFERS ON OKAFOR. DONT GET TURIAF!!

Why did we ever get rid of JRICH? Another bad Warrior move.

Posted By: briansmartt | July 09 2008 at 01:23 PM

Baron Davis has the worst agent ever. A person in his predicament, siging witht he worst team in the history of sport. Now what he should have done, if he really wanted to get to LA. Do a sign and trade with the Lakers. The Warriors sign him and then make a deal with the Lakers for Lamar Odam and Jordan Farmar. With Pau Gasol and Kobe and Baron, they would be unstoppable. I hate the Lakers, but With Bynum comnig back there is no room really for Odam, and the Lakers would look very much like this yrs Celtics with 3 legitimate scorers to go to. You got a young center to get rebounds and they could start Turiaf at power foward to do hustle plays, get boards etc. But no now he is on the Clippers, and they are looking like a 20 win team. Karma, by way of trying to screw the W's is a beautiful thing

Posted By: Unleashed | July 09 2008 at 01:24 PM

Anf Further more, a front line of biedrins, Odam, and Capt jack looks pretty good.

F Jackson
F Odam
C Biedrins
G Ellis
G Magette

fill in a couple places for depth, maybe get Hinrich, and a hustle guy one that just plain does evrything BUT score, then you got something going

Posted By: Unleashed | July 09 2008 at 01:33 PM

ITS OVER

No PG, no points. We were one piece away, now we are back to the stoneage.

Maggette is totally redundant. We need nothing form him. Be grateful if we sned him and Harrington for someone useful.

We have @ left, we cannot sign Smith and not have Atlanta match. Maybe we can package Maggette and Harrington for someone we could use:

Raymond Felton matches Dizzle's assist total last season. He is the only guy we might be able to get that will help us. NO FA's through 2010 that we need that we could get, and you all know if there is a guy in the draft we must have, we will pick too late.

After that, Kyle Lowry might be available, Smith is going to cost too much, Okeafor will probably cost too much.

If we can't get a real PG, and Monta cant average 7.5 dimes or better, we might as well trade everyone but Monta and Beidrins and try for LeBron on 2010. Wade too.

Sad thing is, the Bayarea is the best place in the entire country to live, and NOBODY wants to play here.

Pretty sure God hates the W's. I defy any of you to prove me wrong. He might have liked Rick Barry, but that was 33 years ago.

Posted By: gride11 | July 09 2008 at 02:04 PM

Gride, I feel your pain, I have been a fan since the days of Bernard King and World B Free, JB Carroll, etc. So I feel ya. I have faith in Mullin though. He always hit the open J, and he will this time too. Monte is a young guy, let him develop, people had the same reservations abut Sleepy Floyd, and he turned out pretty good. Give this team a chance, at the ned of the year, Baron didnt run the offense if break wasnt there, he was hoisting 3's or just gonig to the hole. they may actually be able to run plays now. And Jackson can set up the offense too. I am not worried abut them scoring Don Nelson teams always do. the west is brutal, but they arent killing themselves in contracts and can alwys improve unlike when Murphy Dunleavy and Richardson and Foyle had terrible contracts, add Jamison to that too. Have faith in Mully, he does know what he is doing

Posted By: Unleashed | July 09 2008 at 02:45 PM

Its pretty hard to hang on for Mully. He got rid of DunMurphy, that was cool, and getting Davis to start was a coup. The rest is killing me! Faith waivers when you pay Maggette twice his value. Guy would be a W for $7mil per season, and maybe we could afford another guy without sending a core player away.

Mullin makes a trade and dumps Harrington and/or Maggette for a body we need, or faith is over. NO MORE 6'6" TO 6'8" KIDS! Get a PG! There are like 4 teams are are legit that don't have a real PG. They have Yaos, or Kobes, or Lebrons. The rest have CP3, DRon, Nash, etc. Where do we fit in there? And forget a half court offense, that didn't work for 15 years!

Posted By: gride11 | July 09 2008 at 02:52 PM

No need to get another star PG. They may bring us exiting game, like Davis, but won't help building a solid team. Time to play those young talents and maybe will find a hidden gem like CP3.

Posted By: fremont_hub | July 09 2008 at 03:06 PM

What a bunch of whiny babies. Today is the first day of free agent signings and the season doesn't start until November. But NNNNOOOOO, it's the end of the world and the Warriors suck. If this is all the players the W's sign, then YES, not enough to do anything, but give it a break. At least wait till all their moves have been made.

Posted By: Stanz | July 09 2008 at 03:31 PM

Maggette...too many years, too much money!!! This is gonna be the Warriors version of Zito!

Foyle, Dunleavy, Murphy...Mully did you learn anything? There are a ton of great free agents in 09 and 10. LeBron, Yao, Kobe, Boozer etc...lets save the $ for them.

Here's Chris Mullin's email address... cmullin@gs-warriors.com.
Let's let him know how we feel about this signing ...

Posted By: grr415 | July 09 2008 at 03:43 PM

Nice to see all you fair weather front runners are jumping off the bandwagon. Don't bother showing up next year when the Warriors start winning.

Posted By: bearz | July 09 2008 at 03:48 PM

you all are haters...first of all, get over yourselves if you think the FAs in 2010 like LeBron or DWade are potential signees for the dubs...ain't happening...second, like many have said, let things unfold before you all jump ship...you hate on Mullin, yes he did poorly in signing DunMurphy to deals, but he did well in unloading them and getting us Capt. Jack and cap space for Monta and AB...let Mullin have the off-season before you judge...he could go after Miller, as someone else posted, or I'd like to see a package put together for Nash, reunite him with Nellie and watch how good Monta, Italy, AB, BW and CM play...and if the Lakers are stupid enough to let the energetic Turiaf go, Mullin will have pulled one over on the West champs...and whoever thinks we should have traded for Odom and Farmer better check themselves...Odom is a scrub, straight up, and zebras don't change their stripes...Let the two guys who have given us two great years of hoops, Mullin and Nellie, do their thing...all you have to do is sit back and watch, and if you don't like it, think about the days of DunMurphy, JBCares and the rest, and then thank the hoops gods you don't have to sit through THAT anymore..

Posted By: jdizzle | July 09 2008 at 04:27 PM

one word which sounds much sweeter... BARBOSA!
