MLB Top Weekly Performances - Catchers

Catching has been one of the weakest and most inconsistent positions in fantasy baseball this season. There are a handful of good catchers, but only one of the new "elite" catchers has made this week's list, and his numbers aren't as good as owners would have liked. The other two catchers are very low ranked catchers, therefore it's quite a surprise to see them do so well, especially David Ross who did all of his damage in only eight at bats. Even though catching is a weak position, these players deserve recognition for being the best of the bunch this week.

Gold Medal

John Buck (Catcher - Kansas City Royals) - Buck helped the Royals beat the Rays this week in an entertaining game. The Rays came back to tie the game in the ninth, but Buck wound up putting the Royals up for good in the 10th. He hit a shot and helped the Royals top the Rays. Prior to that homerun he had been in an 8-for-40 slump, hitting only .200 in his previous 11 games. Buck may never be a top catcher in the league, but he shows flashes of potential every now and then. He showed some flashes this week.

7/21, 5 runs, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 0 SB, .333 AVG

Silver Medal

David Ross (Catcher - Cincinnati Reds) - Ross did an amazing job this week when you take into account the fact that he only had eight at bats. He showed off his power, drove in some runs, and had a great average. However, owners should also be aware that the homeruns were definitely aided by the wind at Wrigley Field. However, at the end of the day they count as homeruns and that's what matters. Ross has done a good job in his last few games. He may not be too valuable to fantasy owners because of his sporadic play, but he deserves the attention for his performance none-the-less.

5/8, 3 runs, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, .625 AVG

Bronze Medal

Geovany Soto (Catcher - Chicago Cubs) - Soto showed off some of his power again this week, but his average wasn't exactly what fantasy owners would have liked. He is no longer hitting .320-.330 for the season, but a high .280's average is still quite respectable. He's had around four straight games that were rough in terms of power numbers, but he is still a must start in fantasy baseball. He is a catcher who deserved his All-Star nod. I can't say the same thing for someone like, say, Jason Varitek. Hopefully Soto can keep producing because he's been one of the best catchers in baseball this season.

6/26, 5 runs, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, .231 AVG
