-
Michael Crabtree*, Texas Tech
Height: 6-3. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
Projected Round (2010): Top 5 Pick.
5/22/08: Doubters will say Michael Crabtree is a product of the system. So, what they're telling us is that if Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald played for Hawaii or Texas Tech, they wouldn't be first-round prospects? What Crabtree did as a redshirt freshman last year was downright disgusting. Try 134 receptions, 1,962 yards and 22 touchdowns. He had one of his biggest games against Oklahoma, catching 12 balls for 154 yards and a score.
2007: I know stats don't really mean anything in Texas Tech's offense, but Michael Crabtree just seems special. In the first seven contests of his collegiate career, Crabtree has 78 receptions, 1,244 yards and 17 touchdowns. What really impresses me is his combination of size and speed. That 40 time may even be faster now, as it is a bit old.
-
Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland
Height: 6-2. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.33.
Projected Round (2010): Top 20 Pick.
5/22/08: Darrius Heyward-Bey was inconsistent in 2007. Then again, any receiver would have been with the garbage Maryland had at quarterback (Chris Turner and Jordan Steffy combined for nine touchdowns and 11 picks). Heyward-Bey has a pretty sick 40 at his size. He has a shot to run a high 4.2.
2007: As a freshman, Darrius Heyward-Bey led the team in receptions (45) and receiving yards (694). All of his production came toward the end of the season. Named to the preseason first-team All-ACC. Still has a lot of room to grow - it's almost scary how good this guy can become.
-
Percy Harvin, Florida
Height: 5-11. Weight: 186.
Projected 40 Time: 4.32.
Projected Round (2010): Top 20 Pick.
5/22/08: Percy Harvin didn't have imposing numbers as a receiver (764 yards, 10 touchdowns), but he also had 858 rushing yards. Harvin won't even be 21 by the time the 2009 NFL Draft rolls around, so some teams will find that appealing. However, Harvin will have to run a fast 40, especially at his size, if he wants to beat out Jeremy Maclin and Darrius Heyward-Bey to be second on this list.
2007: You can look at Percy Harvin's freshman numbers (34 receptions, 427 yards) all you want, but they don't tell the whole story. Harvin dominated at the end of the 2006 campaign, garnering 91 yards against South Carolina and 62 versus Arkansas. However, Harvin saved his best performance for last, as he notched nine catches for 60 yards in the BCS Championship. Harvin is essentially a lock to go in the top 20, given his 40. If he keeps improving, he could be taken in the top five whenever he chooses to declare.
-
Jeremy Maclin*, Missouri
Height: 6-1. Weight: 199.
Projected 40 Time: 4.33.
Projected Round (2010): Top 20 Pick.
5/22/08: If Jeremy Maclin can run a 4.29, you better believe he'll be off the board by the pick No. 15. He has a chance to do it, though if I had to bet, I'd say low 4.3.
2007: Jeremy Maclin set the NCAA freshman record for all-purpose yardage. A dynamic return specialist, Maclin also had 1,055 receiving yards, 375 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns in 2007. He'll be a red-shirt sophomore in 2008, so he'll be eligible for the 2009 Draft.
-
Arrelious Benn*, Illinois
Height: 6-2. Weight: 214.
Projected 40 Time: 4.46.
Projected Round (2010): Top 25 Pick.
7/26/08: The Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Arrelious Benn led the Fighting Illini with 54 catches and 676 yards. He was consistent all year, registering at least four receptions in 11 of his 13 games.
-
Kenny Britt, Rutgers
Height: 6-4. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2010): 1-2.
7/26/08: If Kenny Britt runs a 4.4 at his size, he might become a lock to go in the first round. Britt had 62 receptions for 1,232 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore, earning a spot on the All-Big East second team. He won't even be 21 when the 2009 NFL season kicks off.
-
Carlton Mitchell*, South Florida
Height: 6-4. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.39.
Projected Round (2010): 2.
7/26/08: Not only does Carlton Mitchell have a very impressive 40 for his massive frame, he also was very productive as a redshirt freshman; he caught 37 passes for 537 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Bulls in all three categories.
-
Vidal Hazelton, USC
Height: 6-3. Weight: 208.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2010): 2.
5/22/08: As a sophomore, Vidal Hazelton caught 50 passes for 540 yards. His production was deemed a disappointment, though it was later discovered that he had multiple muscle tears in his stomach. Hazelton will be at full strength in 2008, so expect a huge year.
-
Brandon LaFell, LSU
Height: 6-3. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
Projected Round (2010): 2-3.
5/22/08: Brandon LaFell cooled off toward the end of the season but still managed to lead the team in receiving yards (656). He'll have to be more of a factor with Early Doucet gone.
2007: So much for LSU not having a second option across from Early Doucet. Brandon LaFell had the breakout performance of his collegiate career against a very solid Virginia Tech defense, catching seven passes for 125 yards, leading all Tiger receivers.
-
Oderick Turner, Pittsburgh
Height: 6-3. Weight: 200.
Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
Projected Round (2010): 3.
5/22/08: Oderick Turner saw his yardage drop from 660 to 496 in his sophomore year. Pittsburgh had nothing but complete garbage at quarterback, so you can't really blame Turner. He needs a 4.4 40 though.
2007: Oderick Turner, who has an excellent 40 at 6-3, was extremely productive as a freshman and quickly became one of Tyler Palko's favorite receivers. Turner had 44 catches, 660 yards and eight touchdowns. His second-best performance was against West Virginia (six receptions, 95 yards, one touchdown).
-
Carl Moore, Florida
Height: 6-4. Weight: 220.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Projected Round (2010): 3.
7/26/08: Carl Moore will turns some heads if he runs a 4.4 at the combine despite being 6-4, 220. More importantly, he needs to be productive at Florida; he's a JUCO transfer.
-
Greg Matthews, Michigan
Height: 6-3. Weight: 206.
Projected 40 Time: 4.57.
Projected Round (2010): 3-4.
5/22/08: Greg Matthews showed flashes of signs to come in the 2008 Capital One Postseason Exhibition Match, catching seven passes for 62 yards. Though he garnered just 39 receptions and 366 yards, Matthews' numbers will soar now that Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington are off to the NFL.
-
Kyle Jefferson*, Wisconsin
Height: 6-5. Weight: 179.
Projected 40 Time: 4.46.
Projected Round (2010): 3-4.
7/26/08: Kyle Jefferson needs to put on some muscle, but he has time to do that. As a freshman, he was third on the Badgers with 26 receptions and 412 yards.
-
Jacoby Ford, Clemson
Height: 5-9. Weight: 187.
Projected 40 Time: 4.37.
Projected Round (2010): 4.
5/22/08: Jacoby Ford missed six games with an ankle injury. He had 17 receptions for 310 yards and four touchdowns the rest of the year.
2007: Jacoby Ford obviously doesn't have the size NFL coaches want, but his speed makes up for it. Plus, he was actually productive as a freshman, collecting 187 yards through the air and 104 more on the ground. His exceptional kick-returning skills help.
-
Terrance Toliver*, LSU
Height: 6-5. Weight: 186.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2010): 4.
7/26/08: Terrance Toliver, one of the top-recruited receivers a year ago, totaled 10 receptions, 249 yards and three touchdowns as a true freshman.
-
Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina
Height: 6-1. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Projected Round (2010): 4-5.
7/26/08: After a solid freshman campaign (39 catches, 660 yards, 4 TDs), Hakeem Nicks dominated the ACC as a sophomore, registering 74 receptions, 958 yards and five scores. If he improves his 40, he'll shoot up draft boards.
-
David Gettis, Baylor
Height: 6-4. Weight: 209.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Projected Round (2010): 4-5.
7/26/08: David Gettis had just one decent game and failed to put up decent seasonal numbers (31 catches, 407 yards, no touchdowns). However, he's a big receiver with 4.4 speed and kick-returning abilities, so he's bound to get some looks in the middle rounds.
-
Terrell Hudgins, Elon
Height: 6-3. Weight: 225.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Projected Round (2010): 4-5.
7/26/08: A massive receiver, Terrell Hudgins set a conference record with 117 receptions in 2007. Level of competition is his Hudgins' biggest issue, assuming he can run a 40 in a low 4.5.
-
Bryan Anderson, Central Michigan
Height: 6-5. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Projected Round (2010): 5.
7/26/08: Qualified for the All-MAC second team by catching 90 passes for 1,132 yards and 10 touchdowns. With figures like that, one has to wonder what it takes to make the first team.
-
Damian Williams, USC
Height: 6-1. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Projected Round (2010): 5.
7/26/08: Had to sit out the 2007 campaign because he transferred from Arkansas to USC. As a sophomore in 2006, Williams put up poor numbers (19 receptions), but played in a very limited passing attack. He should be able to thrive at USC, assuming he gets enough targets.
-
Brian Hartline, Ohio State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 186.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Projected Round (2010): 5.
7/26/08: Brian Hartline finished behind Brian Robiskie in receptions (52) and yards (694) as a sophomore. He's talented, but his mediocre 40 is going to hurt his draft stock.
-
Preston Parker, Florida State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Projected Round (2010): 5-6.
7/26/08: Preston Parker put up admirable numbers in 2007 (62 catches, 791 yards, three touchdowns) in a questionable passing attack. More important for his draft stock is his ability to be a dangerous return specialist.
-
Eric Decker, Minnesota
Height: 6-2. Weight: 215.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Projected Round (2010): 5-6.
7/26/08: Eric Decker led the Golden Gophers in receiving, catching 67 passes for 909 yards and nine scores as a mere sophomore.
-
Jeremy Childs, Boise State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.42.
Projected Round (2010): 5-6.
7/26/08: Despite missing Boise State's postseason exhibition match, Jeremy Childs managed 82 catches, 1,045 yards and nine touchdowns, earning himself a spot on the All-WAC first team.
-
Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 176.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Projected Round (2010): 6.
7/26/08: Armanti Edwards, quarterback of Appalachian State, will have to switch to receiver at the next level because he doesn't have the size or the arm strength to be an NFL signal caller. He does have the athleticism to be a wideout, however, as he led his team in rushing with 1,588 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground.
-
Aaron Boyce, Eastern Washington
Height: 6-2. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Projected Round (2010): 6.
7/26/08: Aaron Boyce dominated the Big Sky as a sophomore, registering 85 receptions, 1,308 yards and 10 touchdowns. This was helped by a 17-catch, 232-yard performance against Montana on Oct. 6.
-
Sam Shields, Miami
Height: 6-0. Weight: 181.
Projected 40 Time: 4.38.
Projected Round (2010): 6.
7/26/08: Sam Shields should draw Al Davis' interest around Round 6. Shields has a great 40, but has poor workout habits that caused him to get benched in 2007.
-
Austin Rogers, Tennessee
Height: 6-2. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Projected Round (2010): 6-7.
7/26/08: Austin Rogers was second on Tennessee with 56 catches and 624 yards. Rogers was pretty consistent until the final three contests of the 2007 campaign, when he had just seven total receptions.
-
Jeff Moturi, UTEP
Height: 6-0. Weight: 182.
Projected 40 Time: 4.39.
Projected Round (2010): 6-7.
7/26/08: Emerged as one of the top receivers in Conference USA in 2007, notching 65 catches, 891 yards and 13 touchdowns as a mere sophomore. Jeff Moturi had two games where he caught at least 10 passes. A member of the All-Conference USA first team.
-
Ryan Wolfe, UNLV
Height: 6-1. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2010): 6-7.
7/26/08: Ryan Wolfe turned some heads with a 55-catch, 911-yard freshman campaign in 2006. His stats regressed a bit in 2007 (66 receptions, 784 yards) but you can blame that on uncertainty at the quarterback position.
-
Duke Calhoun, Memphis
Height: 6-4. Weight: 197.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2010): 6-7.
7/26/08: Led Memphis with 62 receptions and 890 yards despite missing a game.
-
Jarred Fayson, Illinois
Height: 6-0. Weight: 209.
Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Projected Round (2010): 7.
7/26/08: Jarredy Fayson, a transfer from Florida, hasn't done much at the collegiate level outside of returning punts.
-
Kyle Williams, Arizona State
Height: 5-10. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Projected Round (2010): 7.
7/26/08: Kyle Williams qualified for this list solely as a return specialist, as he averaged nearly 10 yards per punt take-back in 2007, earning himself a spot on the All-Pac-10 first team.
-
Emmanuel Sanders, SMU
Height: 6-1. Weight: 176.
Projected 40 Time: 4.40.
Projected Round (2010): 7.
7/26/08: Finished his sophomore campaign with 74 receptions, 889 yards and nine touchdowns. Also averaged more than nine yards per punt return, which is pretty solid.
-
Ray Small, Ohio State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 180.
Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: Roy Small produced just 20 catches and 267 yards, as he couldn't get past Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline on the depth chart. However, Small was a solid return specialist, which is why he makes this list.
-
Jamar Bryant, East Carolina
Height: 6-2. Weight: 208.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: As a sophomore, Jamar Bryant led East Carolina with 48 catches and 704 yards. An honorable mention on the All-Conference USA team.
-
Austin Collie, BYU
Height: 6-2. Weight: 206.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: Despite missing two games, Austin Collie led BYU in receiving yardage (946) and qualified for the All-Mountain West second team. Collie was also solid as a return specialist.
-
Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green
Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: A slow 40 is Freddie Barnes' main issue; Bowling Green's No. 1 wideout had 82 receptions, 962 yards and nine scores as a sophomore.
-
Stephen Williams, Toledo
Height: 6-5. Weight: 197.
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: It's a shame Stephen Williams has an abysmal 40; he put up monstrous numbers as a sophomore at Toledo, including 1,169 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
-
Richard Sherman, Stanford
Height: 6-3. Weight: 191.
Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: Another talented receiver with a poor 40, Richard Sherman caught 39 passes for 651 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore.
-
Mike Williams, Syracuse
Height: 6-2. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.43.
Projected Round (2010): 7-FA.
7/26/08: Mike Williams has a great 40 for his size. He was also very productive as a sophomore (60 catches, 837 yards, 10 TDs). He'd be a lot higher on this list, but he has been suspended for academic reasons. I guess Williams was too lazy to find someone to do his homework and take his tests for him.
-
Carlos Singleton, Memphis
Height: 6-8. Weight: 215.
Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
Projected Round (2010): FA.
7/26/08: A massive receiver at 6-8, 215, Carlos Singleton put up solid numbers for Memphis in 2007, catching 51 passes for 767 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns.
-
Wes Lyons, West Virginia
Height: 6-8. Weight: 220.
Projected 40 Time: 4.61.
Projected Round (2010): FA.
7/26/08: Like Carlos Singleton, Wes Lyons' best attribute is his height, obviously. He registered only seven receptions in 2007, but that's because he was limited with a knee injury.
-
Cortez Gent, Florida Atlantic
Height: 6-2. Weight: 170.
Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Projected Round (2010): FA.
7/26/08: Despite missing a game, Cortez Gent notched 64 receptions, 1,082 yards and nine touchdowns. However, his production could be the result of Rusty Smith getting him the ball. Gent is paper-thin at 170 pounds and runs a poor 40.
