Information is Hard to Find For Memphis Tigers Football
By MFSKEN | July 29, 2008
The Memphis Tigers kick off their football season with a road game against the Ole Miss Rebels on August 30 and you wouldn’t be able to tell it based on the buzz around town or on the net. I’ve been trying to get some information to preview the upcoming football season but I’ve struggled to locate anything useful.
The Memphis Edge posted a blog regarding Tiger football on April 11 with a preview of the Blue-Grey spring game. I searched Google and the first result was a link to a story on GoTigersGo about former Tiger center Gene Frederic vying for an Arena Football League championship as an offensive lineman with the San Jose SaberCats.
The next search result also pointed to GoTigersGo featuring a link to a press release dated July 15 declaring that quarterback Tyler Bass has enrolled in classes at the University of Memphis and will be eligible for the 2008 season; finally some current information about this year’s team.
My excitement quickly dimmed upon glancing at the next results. ESPN’s Tiger page was of no use. Most of the information was of last year’s team and results. The 2008 schedule was listed, but most of the information about this year was posted upwards of 90 days ago.
Sports Illustrated was next. They actually had a section with links to various Tigers stories. A few examples: Head coach Tommy West signs contract extension from The Commercial Appeal; Pearce and Calhoun named to Preseason Conference USA team from CSTV; Tigers will have a new look this year from The Herald Dispatch of Huntington, WV.
The last link was a nice article from the Marshall University view point. The article recalled the Thundering Herds’ winless start in 2007 as they prepared to play Memphis, a team shaken by the loss of fallen teammate Taylor Bradford. Memphis would go on to win a nationally televised and emotionally-fueled contest, 24-21 behind Martin Hankins 346 passing yards and two touchdown tosses.
Sports Illustrated also had a nice summary of information about last year’s stats. The Tigers ranked 18th nationally in total offense with 443.6 yards per game and were 79th in scoring with 29.4 points per game. Defensively, the Tigers were ranked 103rd giving up 441.5 yards per game. The 31.3 points allowed was good for 131st in the NCAA.
Sports Illustrated also had a link to the Daily Helmsman, a site dedicated to the Tigers. At the top of the page was a picture of Taylor Bradford wearing his Tiger football uniform with the headline reading “Bradford murder detailed in TV Series,” along with the sub heading “U of M administrators refuse permission for campus footage in The First 48. I know all Tiger fans will tune in for this story which is to appear on A&E on Tuesday, July 29.
I’m not at all surprised to hear the university’s reaction. When I contacted the university Athletic Office about getting a media guide (I’m a blogger after all), I was told that I could get one through their web site under the ticket purchase option.
So basically, I am in a position to say things about the university and it’s not worth $15 to them to make sure that I don’t have an axe to grind with the U of M. Actually their costs are covered by all the folks who pay for them so it wouldn’t even cost them $15. Better yet, they could scan one into a PDF file and send it to my email account.
This is the University of Memphis we’re talking about. The same university that boasts $6.02 million in revenue for the Tiger Scholarship Fund which also has an approved athletics budget of $31 million.
I’ve supported the athletics department and the business department. I’ve enjoyed a good relationship with the university so this will be the last time I bring this up.
I can’t find good info about the Tigers to write about Tiger Football so the stories may be slow in coming and probably brief but I’ll do the best I can. Be sure to check back here for more information on the Memphis Tigers.
