MLB Start 'Em, Sit 'Em - Week 18

The All-Star break throws a bit of a wrench into the considerations for whom to start and whom to sit this week.

Note: Start 'Em, Sit 'Em will follow the weekly schedule of most fantasy leagues, that is, starting Monday and ending Sunday.

START 'EM!

Ian Stewart | 2B/3B
Colorado Rockies

Stewart is finally getting his chance to play consistently, and lately, he has made the most of it.  Batting .438 with 12 RBI since his most recent call-up, Stewart has a pretty favorable schedule this week, facing the likes of Ian Snell, Yoslan Herrera, Zach Duke, Anibal Sanchez, who hasn't pitched in over a year, and a struggling Ricky Nolasco.

Doug Davis | SP
Arizona Diamondbacks

Davis has had a bit of an inconsistent year, but the beauty of pitching for Arizona is that you get to face NL West teams a lot.  That is the case for Davis this week, as he will make starts against San Diego and Los Angeles, both teams who struggle badly to score runs.  Given Davis's good strikeout rates this year, he could compile some excellent fantasy numbers by the end of this week.

Armando Galarraga | SP
Detroit Tigers

Galarraga has been a nice surprise for the Tigers this year, and he has kept up his strong performance throughout the year.  This week, he makes two starts, one against a vastly disappointing Cleveland team, and the next against a struggling Tampa Bay team.  As long as he continues to pitch well, he is a must-start every week, but he should do particularly well this week.

SIT 'EM!

Joey Votto | 1B/OF
Cincinnati Reds

Votto was a great waiver-wire pickup early in the season, as he proved Dusty Baker right by producing immediately upon earning an everyday slot in the lineup.  However, he is hitting .188 with virtually no power since the All-Star break, so even though his matchups are pretty favorable this week, keep him on your bench until he starts to heat up again.

Todd Wellemeyer | SP
St. Louis Cardinals

The shine is starting to wear off some of the surprising St. Louis players, especially the pitchers, and Wellemeyer is no exception.  Wellemeyer has a 6.51 ERA in his last 27.2 IP, and he will face an Atlanta lineup that should still have Mark Teixeira, then the explosive Philadelphia Phillies.  Until the Cardinals' pitching staff starts showing some consistency again, none of their starters are that dependable anymore.

Fausto Carmona | SP
Cleveland Indians

Back after a very long layoff, Carmona looked every bit as rusty as his absence would predict.  Carmona gave up nine runs in less than three innings to the Twins, who are not exactly an offensive powerhouse.  His next start comes against Detroit, whose offense is beginning to shift into high gear.  You may have become impatient with Carmona, but you will have to be patient a little while longer until he shows he can dominate even the bad teams.
