Titans training camp 7-29 morning practice

Just a few tidbits from this morning’s practice on another hot day. It will be sweltering when the pads will be on this afternoon.

I got my closest look yet at Mike Williams in camp and he certainly does seem to be slimmed down from last year. He didn’t do much later in 11-on-11 team work.

The Titans worked on punt coverage first, but without a punter. I didn’t see Josh Miller at all. Craig Hentrich took the snaps but only simulated punting the ball while a JUGGS machine did the work. Chris Davis, Chris Carr and Brandon Jones took turns fielding the punts but the purpose of the period was for the coverage players to maintain lane discipline while the blockers on the return team worked on preventing them from that.

The offense then did some walkthroughs before the team split into three groups — the o-line and d-line in their own separate groups for drills and the remainder of the team doing some 7-on-7 work. Barry Booker had Jim Washburn in his face after one screw-up. O-line and d-line drills were otherwise uneventful.

Jake Scott looked a little spindly-legged to me. It’s the first time I noticed that. It shouldn’t be a problem though.

The team reassembled for some 11-on-11 team work. Kerry Collins completed a long pass on a well-thrown ball to Brandon Jones on a post route. Eric King and Chris Carr had fairly decent coverage.

Chris Johnson showed his speed on several occasions, once on an off-tackle run for about 20 yards. Of course, KVB tried to punch the ball loose running down the play from behind, as he did a few times. Johnson also split out wide left on one play, forcing Calvin Lowry into single coverage. A mismatch, but the play went to the other side. Lowry had an interception earlier but I was too far away from the play to say much about it, other than it looked like he was in good position and the ball was thrown right to him.

Biren Ealy caught a long pass over Michael Griffin. Alge Crumpler caught a few over the middle.

Leroy Harris took some reps with the first team at center.

I got a brief scare when Jevon Kearse limped off after one play. A trainer examined him for a minute and Kearse then limped over to the offensive group rather than go across the field back to the defense. He took a knee for a few minutes and then returned to practice. It doesn’t appear to be serious but the fans were understandably concerned for a while.

Vince Fuller, Carr and King, who are all competing at the nickel back position, were on the second team defense with Fuller and Carr getting work at safety and King at right corner.

I’m still learning how to use my new camera and had a few problems with it this morning but hope to post a few photos soon.

Thanks for the update Andrew. From what you have seen when you have been there, what’s your take on the third RB spot? Is Omar Cuff a real threat to take Chris Henry’s spot or is he at most a practice squad guy?

Adam, the Titans have a lot of money invested in White, Henry and Johnson, who are all second- or first-round draft picks. As I mentioned in my review of the running backs, I don’t expect Cuff to make the 53-man roster but I do believe he has a good shot at making the practice squad. Thanks for asking.

Incidentally, with LenDale White excused from practice this morning, it was Johnson, not Henry, who got the reps with the first team offense.

I forgot to mention earlier that I ran into Ed, a regular reader of Total Titans, at this morning’s practice. Good to see you again. Also, as I mentioned in another thread, I regret that I missed Garland today.

I hope to continue meeting you guys and also seeing many of you again. Thanks for your continued support of Total Titans.

Sorry we couldn’t hook up, Andrew. I kept my eyes open for a guy that looked like that picture at the top of this page, but no such luck. There were quite a few people out today, so I even had trouble finding the friends I came with, much less finding some guy I’ve never actually seen before.

Here are the things I noticed today:

    1) I will be pretty shocked if Chris Carr is not returning kicks and punts this year. He caught the ball MUCH more cleanly than B. Jones (who catches with his hands away from his body) and C. Davis (who can’t seem to get lined up under the ball and is always having to reach at weird angles to catch the ball). Carr looked like he had good speed and the moves to do something with the ball once he catches it, but that will be hard to tell for sure until the games start.

    2) The offensive line will not miss a beat with Eugene Amano as the starting guard this year. He looked impressive all day, holding up quite well against Haynesworth in line drills. I agree with Andrew that Jake Scott does not look as physically impressive as I expected. You know how a little long hair looks kind of cool on a lineman? Not so on Scott, IMO.

    3) I didn’t see anything good out of Mike Williams today. Sure, he is smaller than last year, but he still seemed to loaf quite a bit to me. I don’t think he will make the team based on what I saw today, but that seems contrary to what I have been hearing from other people so far this year. So maybe I am just missing something. Paul Williams, on the other hand, had a couple of touchdown catches today. One was a deep ball down the left sideline and the other was a shorter catch in the seam on the right side, I think. Ealy also made a nice catch in the left corner of the end zone. Brandon Jones also had a very good day, I thought.

    4) Chris Johnson dropped a lot of passes today. He seemed a bit lazy in drills and did not seem to focus when catching passes. None of the other backs seemed to have any problem catching Earnest Byner’s passes (which were pretty good for an old running back). I don’t know quite how to take what I saw out of him. Does he thing he’s too good to practice hard? He just seemed to be far outworked by the backs that have no shot at making the team.

    5) Jacob Ford and Big Country exchanged words and such after a few plays during some running drills. Stewart also had an exchange with someone else, but I don’t remember who it was. One of the OL dragged Vanden Bosch down by the facemask, and he didn’t take too kindly to it. Watching the linemen battle was probably the most interesting part of the day (although lunch at
Kabuto Japanese Steak House was pretty good too).

    6) Stanford Keglar got his hands on a couple of passes today, knocking them down. Apparently, his nickname is Keg. I think Washburn’s nickname for Big Play is “William”. I heard him say it a lot today.

    7) It was hot today. The Titans could stand to erect come tents for the fans who are not VIPs of the radio station. It can’t be that expensive or difficult to do, and it would be a nice way to show some love to the faithful who are interested enough to spend their time watching grown men practice a game.

I took a bunch of photos today, but I don’t know how well they will turn out since my camera is having issues with the shutter. I will go through them tomorrow and share anything good.

Hello Titans Fans!!! I am very grateful that I now have this site to see how our Titans are doing outside of the media. I live in Saratoga Springs, NY (30 miles north of Albany, 2.5 hrs. north of NYC) and am a relocated Houstonian (12 years ago I moved).

If you have any pics from training camp or as the season goes, I’d love to see them! The only game I will be seeing this year in person is @ Baltimore (gotta love the $120 round trip on Southwest). My e-mail is tmarkus003@gmail.com

    Thanks!
