Cubs lead back to 5 games
Zambrano was OK today. Didn’t have very good stuff, but got through 5 innings before Lou took him out to give him a shortened outing (less than 90 pitches). Cubs were up 5-2 and Samardzija pitched the next couple innings very well. Then Cotts came in and gave up a couple baserunners and Gaudin gave up a game tying home run.
2 outs into the 9th, Soto walks and Ward is called on to pinch hit for Gaudin. Pirates go to the lefty and Lou goes to Reed Johnson. Right after Brenly said he should have bunted, Johnson hits 2-run home run. Soriano follows with a solo home run and Marmol pitches and uneventful 9th for the save.
the Cubs improve to 22 games over .500 for the first time this year. The Brewers got shutout by the Braves so the lead went back to where it started before this series began. 5 games.
The Cardinals play later on and are currently 5.5 out.
Baseball is fun again. I’ve been amazed over the last 2 years under Lou how this team never quits. Today was another example. They just do not quit.
