The Skinny: Brandon Webb allowed just 3 hits and struck out 8 in 7 shutout innings en route to his major league-leading 19th victory in a 4-1 decision that completed a 3-game sweep over the San Diego Padres Thursday at Chase Field. Tony Clark opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 2nd inning that scored Adam Dunn. Conor Jackson added a 2-run double in the 5th, and Chris Snyder made it 4-0 with an rbi single in the 8th. Brandon Lyon allowed 2 hits and a run in the 9th, squandering the shutout. Lyon has given up at least one run in 4 of his last 5 outings.
Diamondbacks Player of the Game: Webb was simply masterful again, and set a new career-high for wins with 19 on the season. He’ll actually get two more starts in the month of August, and could theoretically have 21 wins before September hits.
Numbers: Adam Dunn didn’t get a hit on Thursday night, but he continues to live on the base paths since coming to Arizona. Dunn walked three times against Padre pitching, which yielded 22 free passes in the series. Dunn has been on base 22 times in the 9 games he’s played with the Diamondbacks.
A little broom action: The win gives the D-Backs their 5th 3-game series sweep of the season. All 5 have been accomplished against National League West teams, and they’ve swept each division foe at least once. They’ve given the broom to Colorado twice, and the Dodgers, Giants and Padres once.
Repercussions: The Dodgers topped Colorado earlier in the day, and with the D-Backs’, they’ll head into the weekend with a 2-game lead in the standings over the Dodgers.
Here’s what others are saying about Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks sweeping the Padres…
The Florida Marlins come to town for a weekend 3-gamer with the Diamondbacks starting Friday night. Florida’s Anibal Sanchez, who no-hit the D-Backs in 2006 gets the start in the opener, against Randy Johnson, who has two no-nos himself, including a perfect game in 2004. First pitch is at 6:40 PM at Chase Field. You can read a full preview of the series Friday morning here on AZSportshub.com.
