Stricker fires 64, takes 3-shot lead at Barclays
Steve Stricker sounded a loud message in Friday’s round of The Barclays:
I won this thing last year, and I have no plans of giving the trophy back.
Stricker, who entered the tournament ranked 21st in the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup standings, teed off early Friday at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey, and fired a superb, bogey-free round of 7-under 64, which included an eagle on the 584-yard par-5 third hole. It was the best round of the day and only surpassed thus far this week by Hunter Mahan’s opening-round 62, put Stricker into the 36-lead at 10-under (132). Stricker won the Barclays event last year when it was held outside of New York City.
Mahan followed his 62 with a 73 on Friday and is alone in second three shots back.
Kenny Perry, who entered this week in first place for the race for the FedEx Cup championship and its $10 million payday, fired a 67 Friday and is tied for third at 6-under 136 with Dudley Hart and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, who authored a 67 of his own Friday.
Sergio Garcia and Anthony Kim both shot 67s and are in a tie for sixth along with England’s Paul Casey (71 Friday).
Crowd favorite Phil Mickelson, third in the FedEx points standings, carded another 70 and is tied for 21st. Reigning Open Championship and PGA Championship winner Padraig Harrington struggled to a 73 Friday and missed the cut by two shots, assuring that he will slide a bit from fourth in FedEx points.
American Eric Axley fired a 65 on Friday, climbing 134th to a tie for 61st, making the one-over par cut on the number.
