The Skinny: Yusmeiro Petit continued his solid starting pitching, yielding only 2 hits and 1 run over six innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Florida Marlins 7-1 Saturday at Chase Field. Chris Young and Miguel Montero each homered, and the bullpen mixture of Chad Qualls, Tony Pena and Leo Rosales combined on 3 scoreless innings of relief.
Diamondbacks Player of the Game : Petit, who evened his record at 3-3 and lowered his ERA to 2.83. Petit has been a breath of fresh air, and has stepped up at a good time for manager Bob Melvin. Petit has excelled as the number five starter since Micah Owings’ struggles led him to being demoted to Triple-A.
Numbers: Backup catcher Miguel Montero is making the most of his opportunities. Montero went 2 for 4 on Saturday with a solo homer. In the month of August, Montero is hitting .478 (11 for 23), with 4 home runs.
Repercussions: The Diamondbacks padded their lead in the National League West, with their win and the Dodgers’ 9-2 loss to Philadelphia earlier in the day. Arizona now leads the West by 3 full games.

I’d like to see Petit take over that four spot in the rotation, but Melvin seemed to squash that possibility after the game yesterday.
