Playoffs off to great start: Singh wins The Barclays in sudden death

Aug 24th, 2008 | By TeeOff | Category: FedEx Cup, Golf, News, PGA

Vijay Singh won the first FedEx Cup event in a great start to the PGA Tour playoffs.

After a bogey on the 12th hole, Singh finished with birdies on the 13th and 17th holes to move into a tie with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland.  Singh and Garcia made terrific birdies on the 18th and first playoff hole, making 26 and 27 foot putts respectively.  Sutherland found trouble off the tee and never recovered.

Playing the par-5, 17th for the second playoff hole, Garcia’s tee shot found trouble where Singh was down the middle.  Singh’s second shot from 261 yards landed 20 feet from the pin.  Garcia had 130 yards left after his second shot landed on “abnormal ground” behind a tree and he was given a free drop.  His third shot landed short of the green.  In a last ditch effort, Garcia’s chip slid by the edge of the cup.  Singh easily two-putted for birdie and the win.

It is Singh’s first FedEx Cup win and he now leads the points standings heading into the second tournament - the Deutsche Bank Championship.
