Plaxico Burress Shoots Himself

29 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca15_plaxico_lg1

It has been reported by FoxSports.com that New York Giants star receiver Plaxico Burress accdidentally shot himself in the leg last night while at a nightclub.  Burress spent the night at a hospital and the injury is not life threatening.

After helping to lead the Giants to a successful and remarkable Super Bowl Championship victory last season, Burress signed a five-year, $35 million contract just prior to the start of the Giants first game of the 08′ season.

It was believed that Burress’ most embarrassing and perhaps “stupidest” moment was already in his past. In week four of his rookie season, while with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Burress caught a pass and then spiked the live football! The ball traveled backwards and was recovered by the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’d have to say he’s found a remarkably inventive way to top that gaffe.

Duke’s Ramblings

24 11 2008

by Michael DeLucaEagles Reid Football

Some random thoughts regarding the weekend’s sports.

1.  I’m an Eagle fan, but was thrilled to see them get throttled.  I was even kind of pissed that Demps returned the kickoff.  No matter how attached Lurie is to Reid, a shutout would have to at least get us a step closer to getting the fat man out of here.  The final straw for me was last week’s decision to play for a tie by punting on fourth and one with just a minute and a half remaining in overtime.  I will now root for the Eagles to get continuously pounded until a change is made. Duke’s Picks: Week 12

22 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca

It’s once again time for the best picks on the planet…or at least the cheapest. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s Picks are in bold.

DALLAS COWBOYS -11.5 San Francisco 49ers - So let me get this straight; Cowboys play one decent game, in which they score just 14 points, and suddenly their 11.5 point favorites?  I’ll take Shaun Hill, Mike Singletary, and the points thank you.  Might even be worth a shot on the money line as well, Frisco could win this one outright.

New York Giants - 3.5 ARIZONA CARDINALS - Giants may be the best team in the league, but the Cardinals are 4-0 at home and have the firepower to defeat the defending Super Bowl Champions.  If you’re going to beat the G-Men, you have to do it through the air.  Warner, Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston should be able to get the job done.  Further enforcing this selection is the fact that both Plaxico Burress and Brandon Jacobs are dinged up.

Washington Redskins -3.5 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS - In case you haven’t noticed, I love taking three and a half point spreads.  They’re the best bet in professional sports.  Hasselbeck looked rusty coming off a five game layoff last week.  Look for him to be much more efficient this week and for Seattle to keep this game competetive in their attempt to ruin coach Zorn and RB Shaun Alexander’s return to Seattle.

Reid Punts Away Eagles Playoff Hopes

16 11 2008

They probably weren’t going to make the playoffs anyway, but today Andy Reid insured that the Philadelphia Eagles would once again miss the postseason.  With 1:30 remaining in overtime, Reid opted to punt the ball on fourth and one.  Apparently Reid doesn’t “play to win the game.”  From a single game standpoint, the call may have been the right one.  But already trailing in a wide open wild card race, this tie has sealed the Eagle’s fate for the 2008 season.  It’s time for the fat man to be fired.

Week 11: The Duke’s Picks

14 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca

It’s once again time for the best picks on the planet…or at least the cheapest. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s Picks are in bold.

New Orleans Saints -4.5 KANSAS CITY CHEIFS- Kansas City has spent the last couple week’s getting out to big leads in the first half and then blowing them in the second.  In addition, Larry Johnson returns to the lineup this game.  So why lay 4.5 in a notoriously tough stadium?  The real key to this pick is injuries on the defensive side of the ball for Kansas City.  An already depleted linebacking unit will be without starters Derrick Johnson and Pat Thomas.  In addition, starting DE Tamba Hali is unlikely to play with an ankle injury.  Furthermore, the secondary is banged up.  Brandon Flowers, Patrick Surtain, and Jarrad Page all were limited participants in practice on Thursday.  Drew Brees should light up the sky in this affair and the Saints should win be double digts.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS -4 St. Louis Rams - The Rams have gotten torched in consecutive games and it may not stop there.  Steven Jackson is, once again, unlikely to take the field.  Mike Singletary will get his first win as head coach and it should come in impressive fashion. Ocho Cinco Credits Donovan McNabb

13 11 2008

chadjohnsonpicAccording to a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer, Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johsnon credits Donovan McNabb for his about face regarding his offseason and training camp antics.  Johnson, who considers McNabb a close friend, “I blew his phone up. Donovan was a big influence. [He] really is one of the reasons why I really turned myself around and looked at my situation as more of a positive outlook and just thinking about all the people that would love to play this game, you know? He took me in that direction, instead of thinking about, ‘Oh, I’m tired of losing and I don’t want to be here anymore,’ but just thinking about, ‘Man, a lot of people wish they were in your shoes just to have the ability to play in the NFL.’ That kind of turned me around, and that’s why I’ve been as positive as I have been this year, and even though we’re losing, man, I’ve just been plugging away.”

NFL Week 10: The Duke’s Picks

7 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca

Hey, I was bound to have a stinker at some point!  Luckily, the Jets and Phins kept week 9 respectable for me and the Duke’s overall record against the spread, heading into week 10, stands at 32-27.  Lot’s of big dogs this week, let’s get to it. Once again, here come the best picks on the planet…or at least the cheapest. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s Picks are in bold.duke

PITTSBURGH STEELERS -3 Indianapolis Colts - Indy hasn’t looked so hot on the road in their last few outings, a 31-21 Monday Night loss to Tennessee and a 34-14 scorching at Green Bay.  If the Pittsburgh fans were too much for Washington, in Washington, they should really be able to provide a boost against Indy in the Steel City.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS -15.5 Kansas City Chiefs - If you’re 3-5, you don’t get to give fifteen and a half points.  I don’t care where the game is played (Whale’s Vagina) or who it’s being played against. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Power Rankings - Week 10

5 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca

The Titans remain undefeated,  The Brady Quinn era begins in Cleveland, and Jason Campell finally throws an interception…and then another one.  Many questions to be answered: Can the Titans duplicate last year’s miraculous Patriots feat?  Are the Dolphins the class of the AFC East?  What the heck is Al Davis doing now?  Here are your NFL Power Rankings heading into week 10 of the NFL season.     nfl-rankings
1.  Tennessee Titans (8-0) - Great defense plus dominant running game equals #1 status in the power rankings.

2.  New York Giants (7-1) - The defense continues to carry the defending Super Bowl Champions.

3.  Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) - They’ve played phenomenal football thus far and somehow have masked some glaring deficiencies on the offensive line.  Nice victory in the home-AWAY-from-home game against the Washington Redskins. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Week 9: The Duke’s Picks

31 10 2008

by Michael DeLuca

That’s right, another winning week for the Duke in week 8!  That brings the season record to 30-22 against the spread with seven winning weeks out of eight.  Last week, I told you the Browns would beat the Jags straight up, let you know that the Giants would beat the Santonio “Panama Red Zone” Holmesless Steelers, and that Tennessee would solidify their #1 Power Ranking with a big Monday Night victory against the Colts.  So, once again, forget calling that 1-900 number and pulling out your credit card.  Brandon Lang’s got The Duke’s Picks bookmarked at this point.  Here come the best picks on the planet…or at least the cheapest. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s Picks are in bold.

CLEVELAND BROWNS -2 Baltimore Ravens - I’ve been riding the Browns bandwagon for several weeks now and it’s been paying off.  Their defense is much improved from last season.  Shaun Rodgers has been a huge addition, both literally and figuratively.  Expect a close one, you’ll probably be walking away with a one point victory against the spread.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS -4.5 Houston Texans - Houston is beginning to look like I thought they might when the season began.  Unfortunately, a week one snoozer with the Steelers threw them for a loop, but they’re back on track and Minnesota isn’t blowing anybody away. Read the rest of this entry »

Charles Barkley Quotes

29 10 2008

by MIchael DeLuca

He entered the league as “The Round Mound of Rebound” and left as “Sir Charles.”  In 1993 he was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player and in 2006, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  Yet, despite all of his on court exploits, it’s his off-court antics that have entertained us the most.  With the NBA season tipping off last night and Barkley resuming his role as TNT’s “Most Colorful” Commentator, what better time than to make a top 20 list of my favorite Charles Barkley quotes.

20. Ernie: “Auburn is a pretty good school. To graduate from there I suppose you really need to work hard and put forth maximum effort.”
Charles: “20 points and 10 rebounds will get you through also!”

19. “I think that the team that wins game five will win the series. Unless we lose game five.”

18. The goal of the ‘92 Olympic Dream Team when playing Panama: “To get the Canal back.”

17. After throwing a guy through a 1st floor window in a bar fight, Charles in court…
Judge: “Your sanctions are community service and a fine, do you have any regrets?”
Charles: “Yeah I regret we weren’t on a higher floor”

16. “My family got all over me because they said Bush is only for the rich people. Then I reminded them, ‘Hey, I’m rich’.”

15. “These are my new shoes. They’re good shoes. They won’t make you rich like me, they won’t make you rebound like me, they definitely won’t make you handsome like me. They’ll only make you have shoes like me. That’s it.” Read the rest of this entry »
