Breaking: Giants Reach Out to Strahan

Ladies and Gentlemen, let the games begin!

According to a report by Ralph Vacchiano of the the New York Daily News, the New York Giants have reached out to retired defensive end Michael Strahan and talks about a possible return are "currently underway."

Although it is unclear who within the Giants' organization reached out to the seven-time Pro Bowler, friends of the defensive end acknowledge that the first step has been made -- as well as his potential interest in returning if General Manager Jerry Resse makes him an offer he cannot refuse.

Prior to announcing his retirement, New York offered Strahan a $6.5 million deal which included additional incentives. And given their current state and demand for a talented defensive end to replace Osi Umenyiora, what is another $1.5 to $2.5 million? Assuming, of course, that his "friends" are accurate in their assumption that he'd return for $8 million (or slightly more).

In the mean time, Mathias Kiwanuka remains Umenyiora's replacement.

What do you guys think about this..

Obviously, it'll take a few weeks for strahan to get ready so like Demo said, he'll be on the field week 3-5

It seems like a alot of money to pay for one season and he would miss a fifth of the season.  What about signing Strahan to 2 year 14-16 million contract?

The diference between Stahan and Favres situation is all in the reasons.  Favre switched teams in his come back and broke the hearts of his former Green Bay fans.  Im not saying it was his fault, but that is the reality he was replaced.  Strahan's return on the other hand will almost be like Greek Mythos.  The conquering hero returning home to defend his kingdom in its time of need.  Basically if he runs out from the tunnel on thursday night Im going to piss myself.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;

I truly believed Strahan was sincere when he said he was through with football. I thought all this talk of him returning was silly.

But in light of Jordan, Clemens, Favre et. al., I guess the concept of retirement is now a fungible thing.

I hope you guys are right about this one. If nothing else the signing would be a huge moral boost to the troops after losing a very valued solidier. But I believe Strahan still has plenty of game left. It might take him a few games to condition himself, but I still think he's got it. I don't care if you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, whatever, say a little prayer that Strahan comes back. I know I think the team can still win without him. I just don't think they can go far in the playoffs without him and Osi.

This would be HUGE if #92 were to come back.

Think about this.  Home against Washington is a very winnable game.  We then play the Rams in St. Loo, and then go back home to face a banged up Cincy team.  That is three extremely winnable games.  If Strahan were to come back, figure he'd take 2-3 weeks to get back into "football shape," probably closer to three weeks since he is now ten pounds lighter...by Week 5 against Seattle, he'd be back to his old self, more or less.  Best possible scenario, we win our first three games while Stray is getting back into shape, and then we'd have an in-shape Stray for Week 5 and beyond.  Sounds damned good to me.

Now on Osi,This really sucks not having him this year.He was looking great,,but It almost seems like this was bound to happen 2 his knee, with prior problems to that area,I think after surgery he will be back better then ever next year.

Based on his initial remarks he made, I felt 92 would come back if the team wanted or needed him.

I still feel that way and I think Reese will make him a good offer.  I still want to know if we really have talent at DE behind the front line players.  If this plays out or not we will know if we have players or pretenders in reserve.

For good measure I will say once again Kiwi should be allowed to walk up and rush the passer or drop back into coverage or spy.  That should work if Stra comes back or not.

While I personally LOVE Strahan...am I the only one that DOESN'T want him coming out of retirement? I really think he truely went out on top, and don't think there's a better way to end your career than how #92 did.  Aside from that, with an asking price of $8 million...I think we should save the cap room.  We've got a BUNCH of guys who're gonna need extensions-Burress, Jacobs, Webster, Dockery...and Eli and Bradshaw at some point.

Personally, I'd rather have Kiwi and Tuck out there, with Wilkinson and Clark at LB, unless Kehl proves to be better...and use some of that money this next off season to lock up our guys and go after someone like Asomugha, who's already said he won't re-sign with the Raiders.

Like I said, as much as I'd love to have him back...I really think it's a bad move.  If he comes back it's gonna take him a bit to get into shape, as he's been enjoying his retirement; thus we'd be paying 8+ mil for 10-12 games...and then if he doesn't win another Super Bowl, or perform as well as he did last season...it will somewhat tarnish what he did last season.  I think we should let Kiwi and the other guys get the job done, and pursue someone in the off season, be it by free agency, trade...or more likely, the draft.

I do agree that I like seeing Strahan go out on top because SO many stars try to keep playing and look like shells of their former self out there and it's just sad. For instance, Jerry Rice playing. That was just a complete joke.

As for Strahan, he did have a great season and he went out on the biggest note you can go. However, we really do need him and the reason I'd welcome him back with open arms is because I'd rather have Kiwi at LB than DE because he's been training all year for that, same as last year. Why constantly screw with him? He's a hybrid LB/DE, but he's getting better and better at the LB position. I think he'll truly be great there (not LT or Carson great), but great enough where we'll see him there and won't worry 1 bit about needing another linebacker in that spot (to start).

Also, Wilkinson has had a lot of hamstring injuries and what not lately. I'd rather have him and Clark back there, just in case. It helps add depth and that's what our team is renown for, having great depth at many positions.

Strahan is a Hall of Fame player...I won't mind seeing him back at all, plus the money comes off the book after this season and we have the money free NOW, so get him for this year and we'll have money freed up next year as well (plus the salary cap gets higher again so we'll have even more).

August 25, 2008 5:45 PM

fanfor55years said:

You know, as I think about this whole situation some more I think that there are some interesting permutations that could actually be helpful.

Let's assume Strahan does NOT come back. So what we've got is Clark at SAM (where he probably offers excellent run defense and can use his aggressiveness that he has shown throughout his career). While I don't think he's the equal of Kiwi at that position by any means, he is a proven, professional, linebacker, very much of the Kawika Mitchell variety but probably a bit more athletic than Mitchell. He is probably superior to what the Giants had there at the end of last season when Torbor was playing SAM. Torber may be somewhat better in pass coverage but not as good at stopping the run.

Then we have Wilkinson at WILL versus Mitchell. Now, I won't bore all of you by repeating what I've said many times, but I think Wilkinson is a significant upgrade over Mitchell, if only because he can get to the quarterback (which has now become more crucial in Osi's absence) and cover pretty speedy receivers downfield as necessary. I think he'll prove a game-changer. He was impressive against the Jets in a game that didn't mean much, and VERY impressive against the Pats in a game that did at the end of last season.

So, with this shift I actually think the Giants linebackers became superior to the group that sliced through the playoffs and won the Lombardi Trophy. They aren't as good as they would have been with Kiwi back there, but they are still better than what was most definitely "good enough" at the end of last season. And I think Kehl is probably going to have some impact this season which he may not have had otherwise. Another example of having to throw a rookie into the fray and seeing what he's got. That worked out extremely well last season and that may well be the case again.

So, okay, you have to think Kiwi is a bit of a downgrade from Osi, but he was considered by the Giants as the top DE to come out in his draft year. We know Reese has a great eye for talent, as does Waufle. So while it's a downgrade it's far from a disaster.

Where this becomes a potential problem is in regard to depth on both the defensive line and at linebacker. There isn't enough, but Wynn will definitely give them something and Alford will definitely play a bigger role this season. It appears Cofield and Robbins are ready to have better years than they did last season because they're both in great shape. Who knows about Gilberry, Tollefson and whomever else is on the depth chart, but barring injury the Giants should be okay on the line. Linebacker could be more of a problem because Blackburn isn't a natural OLB and it appears DeOssie may not be a lot of help. I don't know what the story is with Goff. If he is okay then he can probably help at SAM. I assume that unless Strahan comes back then Tank Daniels has now made the team, and he may be a sleeper. In any case, the Giants are not decimated.

And then if Strahan returns (please God...make it happen) all of the above guys will have been able to show what they can do in weeks 1-3 and, at the very least, the Giants will have created a fantastic combination of relatively interchangeable pieces where players know so many positions that the Giants insurance against injuries will be the best in the NFL. And that would be a critical advantage that could be the difference between getting back to the Super Bowl or not.

I'm not saying it's a good thing Osi was hurt. It was a bad deal, very bad luck and definitely a weakening of the defense. But the "experts" who are claiming this destroys this team are just not as familiar with it as are we. This gives some guys a chance to step up and prove themselves. If the team can get Strahan back in uniform, who knows, this could turn into a net positive.

Regardless if Strahan is coming back or not, people need to stop using the money as an issue. We're currently 12 million under the cap, that is basically dead money. Its not like the money rolls over. This is not AT&T guys. If we pay him now, and he leaves next year. We get the money back to extend whoever we need.  Burress and Jacobs are the first priorities. Webster-not so much, Dockery- are you kidding me?...and Eli and Bradshaw will be for enough into the future that Mike will practically be in the HOF (slight exaggeration) Point being, the cap has NO bearing on whether or not he comes back.

First off being concerned that your team just lost a pro bowl DE does not mean your writing off the season especially in August. It's just common sense to be concerned about it.  So all you idiots blabbering on and on about evryone writing off the season should really chill. I know you like to read everything you post as gospel but it's beyond annoying.

Moving forward, even if Strahan does come back which would be great we could still use Kiwi, Tuck and Strahan to get pressure as we did last season with Tuck coming up the gut. I see no reason to move Kiwi back regardless of Strahan coming back. Next year we would be better off drafting / signing a decent linebacker and leave Kiwi at end where he is sure to shine. He was barely grasping the LB dutuies when he got hurt but some of you revisionists have turned him into a pro bowler in the off season.

Michael Strahan-DL- Giants Aug. 25 - 8:23 pm et

The agent for Michael Strahan confirmed that returning to the Giants is "something (his client) is thinking about."

There appears to be a good chance that this (re)marriage will happen. The agent says Strahan "feels the ship isn’t even out of the harbor and they’re already taking on the cannons. He feels like maybe he should jump back in there." Strahan's contract with FOX is reportedly easy to get out of. He's in Greece now, but could be back in the states by the end of the week.

I was very much a doubter in regard to the return of #92 (although I hope and pray he'll come back as a conquering hero...and as I said earlier, he has a great chance to become a critical figure in New York sports lore...I mean this is a Willis Reid moment, a Reggie Jackson Mr. October moment, a Mariano rescuing the Yanks over-and-over to get all those rings, an Eli-to-Tyree moment, a Don Larson perfect game and a Willie Mays catch against Vic Wertz....it's BIG if he comes riding to the rescue) but I'm starting to believe a little. Still skeptical, but there's certainly some smoke here. Hopefully there's fire as well.

Anyway, nice job Haz. Keep digging away at those sources.

Even if Michael "the Sunday Afternoon Warrior " comes to our rescue, I have come up with an idea.

** Writer, posters, Giants fans all over, we should start a petition to get rid of that horrible turf at Giants Stadium.  Does anyone want to start?  Can anyone have any conections?  I can't think to help that we would have a healthy ready to kick butt DE in his PRIME in #72 if the field was grass & not that knee-jerking turf.
