Robert Smith to Replace Gene Upshaw?

Former Vikings running back Robert Smith is an articulate, smart fellow who comes across well on TV and seems to be up on everything that’s going on in pro football - therefore he must be a candidate to replace the late Gene Upshaw as head of the NFL Players’ Union.  No one knows if Smith actually wants the job, but that seems irrelevant.  Other potential candidates reportedly include former players Trace Armstrong and Troy Vincent and current NFLPA president Kevin Mawae.  Not infamous anti-Upshaw emailer Matt Stover?  Not Matt Birk who looks about ready to retire from football and once called Upshaw a piece of bleep?  Yeah, Birk is probably a bad idea.  His negotiating skills need work.  Calling the guys you’re bargaining with pieces of so-and-so - that would be bad form for sure.

So he can spend the next twenty years getting owned at the negotiating table by the league?
