After all the hard work of people saying that it was kind of stupid that teams that had nothing to do with Ernie Davis, meaning Kansas, Virginia Tech and Maryland, both Universal Studios and Syracuse University have found a way to show the Orange football team the movie "The Express" before it is released throughout the country. For some this might be enough, but for me it isn't. I know that I wasn't as vocal as Sean from Troy Nunes is an absolute Magician or Brent Axe on his radio show, but I have said to anyone that was listening that the way this panned out was wrong.I have to say, especially for someone like Athletic Director Dr. Gross, who is a master when it comes to using the media and all the things that it can give, to drop the ball on something like this has me wondering if SU had its hands tied on the issue. Yes, I know that Syracuse will get the gala event. But let's be realistic on that, it is for the people that SU would like to see open their wallets for a lot more than the grand they are paying for the showing, and not for the ordinary folks that just want to see the movie for what it was meant to be, the great history of Ernie Davis and Syracuse in years that a lot of people do not remember.
I will also add that while the Syracuse football team will get to see the movie, they won't be able to watch it until the beginning of the season, as the showing will be on Thursday, September 4th. I guess the positive is that it will be before the home opener against Akron, however if SU loses to Northwestern it would be better if the fan base got to see the movie on that date or we might just be in for the smallest home crowd ever. My wife says all the time "things happen for a reason", this movie might just have happened for a reason in a season like this one, with everything on the line. Hopefully the team and the fans can wrap themselves around the tradition and pride that this movie is going to showcase.
