Tom Brady Fantasy Football Fallout

I’ll start off by saying that I understand and sympathize with Patriot fans that Tom Brady’s injury is far more serious to him, New England, and their fans than it is to the fantasy football owner.  With that, this is one of the most significant fantasy football injuries that there could be this season.

Tom Brady made the jump past Peyton Manning last year in the record books and this year by becoming the hands down top ranked fantasy football quarterback.  With the injury there are many fantasy owners left with someone that they thought would be bye weeks filler as their starting QB.

The Fantasy Football Calculator had Brady’s average draft position at #6.  Were you one of those people that took Brady in the first round?  I was in a couple leagues.   This will throw my whole season for a loop.  I usually trust who I draft and I’m not a big waiver wire scavenger over the season.  Like those that drafted Brady, I will be this year.

Matt Cassel is sure to be the hot pickup this week.  Not only by Brady owners but anyone who wants a possible taste of that offense, rolling the dice that Cassel will come into a situation that will make him a viable fantasy option at QB.

Who may be out there?  Matt Ryan is sure to get some pickups this week.  Sure he had a good week but I’m sure he will still have his struggles.  Jon Kitna may be available in your league, he is sure to have some big games.  Another rookie in Joe Flacco.  Jeff Garcia, Trent Edwards, Kyle Orton.  Nothing real appealing but you have to do what you have to do, huh?  Trading may be an option but people are going to view you as a big target so be careful.  In fact your inbox may already be full.

So…enough babble.  If you drafted Brady #1, who sits as your top player now?  What was the drop off?  Who was your backup QB?

If you are debating on who to pick up or making a trade, go ahead and slap them down here and we will see what we can do to help you out!

  3. Pick up Warner over Cassel, right? (I have Delhomme as the backup.)

  4. I drafted Brady as my first pick, the #2 pick overall in the draft. My thinking was he’ll be a consistent earner against what I felt was a 1-trick pony Vikings offense with AP.

    I’m also 9th out 10 in the waiver order…ugh.

    Here’s who is available in my league:
    - Matt Cassel
    - Philip Rivers
    - Vince Young
    - Jeff Garcia
    - Chad Pennington
    - JaMarcus Russell
    - Mark Brunell

    Any suggestions?

  5. I had Tom Brady in one of my bigger roster leagues. In that league, we start two quarterbacks, and I only had two QBs: Brady (my first pick) and Derek Anderson. Cassel was gone within minutes of Brady’s injury and before I got home from watching the Bills game. I have a waiver claim in for Chad Pennington, and I just picked up Flacco. The only other available QBs who scored points last week are Damon Huard, Kyle Orton, Brodie Croyle, Kerry Collins and Kevin Kolb. Slim pickins.

    As a fantasy owner, this hurts my chances of competing in that league, but as a Bills fan, I am pretty happy. While I wouldn’t wish an injury on him, it is definitely a ray of sunshine for Buffalo.

  6. @Brian,

    Without knowing who another QB on your roster is and possible bye weeks…

    Vince Young is projected to be better than he was, but he is looking at missing 2-4 weeks.

    Philip Rivers may be a safe start although a big drop off from Brady (which everyone available is going to be). He shares the same bye week as Brady so you don’t have to worry about changes there.

    Cassel is a natural choice but of course a gamble and may be hard to get a hold of because people are going to be jumping on him trying to strike gold with Moss there.

    @Chris…

    The thing with Warner that worries me is injury history and if they decide to throw Leinart in there at some point. I would start Warner over Cassel in week 2 but you have to think about the long haul depending who else you got.

    @Patrick,

    I think you were on target given who you had to choose from.

  7. picked brady no backup, i got micheal turner, jerious norwood, ray rice, willis mcgahee, felix jones, dwayne bowe, santana moss, chris chambers, devin hester, antnio gates, dallas d. Thought about trading Felix jones to marion barber team for backup QB but he doesn thave anything worth it. Waivered 3 players (not listed) to try and get cassel, ryan and kerry collins (top qbs availible tavaris jackson and joe flacco next best options scary). Not sure if I should try and trade turner for a QB and RB. Think im going to try to make it through a couple weeks with these QBS and see if i can make a trade for a QB later. What makes it really suck is I lost this week by 10pts with brady barely playing and mcgahee not even touching the ball, also had the 4th highest score in 12 team league……GAY

  8. i got brady the first round. first time i have ever done fantasy football and i still have bulger, delhomme, cassel, hassellback and matt ryan and trent edwards. thoughts?

  9. @ Doug…

    I’ll be honest. One team I had Brady and didn’t have a backup either. I was going to wait until after week one or two and pick someone up because we had few bench spots.

    I put in some moves but won’t find out who I got until in the morning. Ugh.

    @Chad….

    Are you saying that you still have all those QB’s on your roster?

  10. got collins and ryan off waiver wire someone else got cassel dont expect much out of cassel anyway but i wanted him feel like waivering my whole team at this point
