This is a really sad story.
Pirates outfielder Nyjer Morgan was involved in an incident with the Pittsburgh police outside PNC Park Wednesday night. According to Morgan, he was giving Dodgers Joe Biemel, Delwyn Young and Russell Martin a ride back to the Westin Hotel after dinner when he was pulled over because “the tint on his vehicle windows was too dark and violated the state law.”
During the traffic stop, Morgan admits that shockingly, or not at all, he became agitated when the police officer asked him to step out of the vehicle. As the situation escalated, the officer, obviously concerned about the implied impending danger from someone who tints his windows, called for back up in the form of three more police cruisers. In addition, he also felt the need to search all four players as well as the vehicle. Naturally, Morgan was never even issued a citation.
I drive a 1994 Plymouth Grand Voyager with clear windows, so I guess I’m fairly fuzzy to matters like tinting percentage. Apparently though, so is the PA Motor Vehicle Code when it comes to exactly how dark windows can be-although tints of up to 70% have resulted in past citations. Huh? I would think “tinting percentage” might be a difficult thing for a police officer to determine on a parked car at mid-day in the summer, let alone on a car moving at speed on a darkened street close to midnight. But maybe I’m not giving police officers enough credit.
Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, who was in the backseat texting when the incident began, had a pretty good idea of what actually went down.
“I guess we fit the description pretty good — we’re in Pittsburgh, young, African-American driver, nice car. It was embarrassing.”
Maybe they should put that quote on the welcome signs as you enter the city.
