MLB Top Weekly Performances - Catchers

Catchers play an extremely physically demanding position, but that’s what makes good offensive catchers more appealing. They have to deal with the wear and tear of their normal position, and then they’ve got to play offense, get on base, and run around the bases as well. This week there were several catchers who put up some terrific numbers. When you think about all they have to go through during every single game then the numbers seem even more impressive. They deserve praise and recognition for performing so well and helping fantasy owners this week.

Gold

Chris Iannetta (C - Colorado Rockies) - Iannetta has been on absolute fire as of late. He’s hit a homerun in three of his last five games. He’s also been driving in runs and getting in position to score runs. His average and OBP are very nice and he’s making a name for himself in terms of next year’s draft. If the Rockies do decide to go the Iannetta route, and he can perform like he is doing now, then they are going to be in very good shape. This guy is full of talent and he has big time power numbers limited at bats. If he had double the at bats that he’s had so far this season, and hit homeruns on the same rate, then he’d have well over 30 homeruns. Keep an eye on him.

6/16, 5 runs, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB, .375 AVG

Silver

Joe Mauer (C - Minnesota Twins) - I’ve begun to like Mauer more and more as of late. He’s still driving in some RBI, but his power numbers are still a lot lower than people expected. However, he’s a solid fantasy catcher because he’ll get a lot of hits and have a high average. Catchers who can get 160-180 hits in a season, while also having an average well over .300, do not grow on trees. It’d be nice if his power numbers would grow a bit, but at least he’s racking up hits for owners. A high average from a catcher really helps in head-to-head leagues.

12/26, 5 runs, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB, .462 AVG

Bronze

Bengie Molina (C- San Francisco Giants) - Bengie is doing all he can to try to get an extension from the Giants. He hit two more homeruns in his last three games. He has a chance to get near his career high in homeruns and average, plus he’s already set a career high with 92 RBI. 92 RBI from a catcher is extremely impressive, but his stats will look even more amazing if he could break the 100 RBI barrier. That isn’t exactly an easy task for a catcher because of all the wear and tear catchers suffer. Molina has been having a career year and he seems to be a very good fit for the Giants. Their investment seems to have worked out in their favor.

10/26, 4 runs, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB, .385 AVG
