The Redskins Youth Report is a weekly FORUM feature article here at DC Pro Sports Report. We track each week the progress of the rookies and second year players and give them an PLUS (meaning their performance is rising), Neutral (which you can be looked up at Webster's dictionary if you can't figure it out) or MINUS(meaning performance is going down hill).
THE ROOKIES Your PLUSES (RISERS) Weekly 5 Stats: 7 tackles, 1 assist Your Neutrals QB Colt Brennan: (Neutral) Is now officially a clipboard holder and that is where he will remain for 2008, barring freak injuries. You really do not need to read this one weekly, because it ain't changing. TE Fred Davis: (Neutral) Why? I actually saw Davis on the field, and saw him make a few nice blocks. That is good enough to crawl out of a Minus to Neutral. Davis is still not involved int he passing game, which tells me, one, they believe Yoder is a better option at TE other than Cooley, and two, Davis still may not completely grasp the offensive routes. What esle could it be? Davis moves to Neutral. Is there something about these rookies and having 6 yard catches? 2008 Stats: 1 catch, 6 yards, 6.0 Avg S Kareem Moore: (Neutral) Why? Moore plays more of a role on special teams and barring injury, it will remain that was for the most part. Blache will fit him in on certain defensive packages, but Landry, Horton, and Doughty are you main three safeties. That being said, he played the special teams role pretty effectively. Moore stays Neutral. Week 5 Stats: 0 Tackles, o Assists, 0 Intercep. 0 Fumbles OL Chad Rinehart: (Neutral) Why? He was inactive all 5 weeks. Hopefully we don't see Rinehart on the field in 2008, because if we do, we may have injury problems. Rinehart will start out and likely stay throughout 2008 as neutral. DE Rob Jackson: (Neutral) Why? Didn't play as much as I anticipated against the Eagles. Did not record a tackle or stat. Jackson obviously has some serious upside as he continues to draw praise from the coaching staff. He will be worth keeping an eye on, particularly as DE Jason Taylor remains out. He didn't play so he stay as neutral. Week 5 Stats: 0 Tackles, o Assists, 0 Sacks. 0 FumblesWR Devin Thomas: (Neutral) Why? Thomas is obviously growing more comfortable in the lineup. He is on the field more and Zorn seems willing at times to involve him in actual plays. One thing Thomas needs to work on is his off the line play when he is not getting the ball. For the second straight week, Thomas was flagged for a stupid contact penalty on a play where the ball was not thrown to him, costing the Redskins a completion and a first down. I am not going to flag him just yet for it, he has to learn and likely will. I think were going to start seeing a little more of Thomas and that is not a bad idea. His improvement is noted by us, and stays Neutral. Week 5 Stats: Recep: 2 Yds: 28 AVG: 14.0 TDs: 0CB Justin Tryon. (Neutral) Why? Was activated but the work went where ti should, to Fred Smoot, Carlos Rogers, and Leigh Torrence. With Shawn Springs back this week, I suspect Tryon will be listed as an inactive. I do like though his hustle on special teams and would prefer to see him active and in a role there. Particularly on punt return coverage, considering our struggles. Something desperately needs to change on the punt return unit, it is the weakest link of this team right now. Tryon stays NEUTRAL. Week 5 Stats: 0 Tackles, 0 Assists, 0 Intercep. 0 Fumbles Your MINUSES (Going down hill) P Durant Brooks (MINUS): Why? Simple. He stinks. I have no ideas how long Jim Zorn and Danny Smith will give Brooks to get his game on track, but I can bet, Zorn is not going to allow this team to be dragged down by poor punting, and folks, that is what you are getting right now. Brooks had several key opportunities to pin the Eagles deep inside the ten, one was at the 21, the other was around the 18. He just isn't getting the job done. The bad thing for Brooks --- his average fell below 40 to 39.3. The only good thing for Brooks, no wait, forget it, he is DEAD LAST in the NFL in punting. The thing I think is this --- this week coudl be a make or break for Durant Brooks job in DC. Weekly 5 Stats: 4 Punts, 34.5 AVG, 1 Is20WR Malcolm Kelly: (MINUS) Why? Did Santana Moss shew Kelly of the field? Looked like it. Does Kelly understand what is going on? You know, I agree with Spence's assessment of Kelly right now, I just don't consider him a pro football player yet. I was actually kind of surprised to see him on the field at all. Thomas has overtaken Kelly,t hat much is clear, and reports out of Redskins park are, his knee was swollen yet again, with very limited play time. The point --- I don't suspect you will see hardly any of Malcolm Kelly in 2008, period. THE SOPHOMORES - HERE THESE GUYS GET A THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWN, OR NEUTRAL LB HB Blades: ( DE Chris Wilson: (Neutral) Why? Wilson gets in and plays in reserve roles. Didn't record any stats as most of the work was handled by Demetric Evans. Wilson stays NEUTRAL. Week 5 Stats: Tackles: 2 Assists: 1 Pass Deflects: 0S Laron Landry: ( Week 5 Stats: Tackles: 2 Assists: 0 Pass Deflects: 0 S Justin Hamilton: (Neutral) Why? Hamilton was inactive. Hamilton stays neutral. OL Stephon Heyer: (Neutral) Why? Heyer was out injured, injuring his shoulder against Dallas. Jon Jansen took over and provided some serious solid play. BUT, according to various reports, Zorn maintains complete confidence in Heyer and Heyer as starter. We'll see. Heyer stays NEUTRAL. Week 5 Stats: Tackles: 0 Assists: 0 Sacks: 0 Tackles for Loss: 0 2008 Stats: Tackles: 5 Assists: 3 PD: 0 Sacks: 1 *** Brief Commentary: Looking at the Redskins 2008 draft class, it pretty much, at the quarter part of the season, looks like a mixed bag. The three 2nd round picks flopped the first quarter of the season. Malcolm Kelly continues to struggle learning the offense and fighting off a knee injury. I really have no hopes at all for Kelly to be an effective player this season. Devin Thomas on the other hands is showing a little more each week, he just now needs to focus on the finer points of the game and stop getting called for penalties away from the play. Fred Davis is in, but has done nothing more than block. Disappointing considering out expectations for Davis' involvement in two TE sets. The Redskins did appear to get a few gems in the later rounds though, making this draft a mix bag instead of poor. Chris Horton is legit and I think will be starter here for a long time. He has the ability, skills, mind set and executes the defense like a veteran. Kareem Moore has the skills and ability, we have seen it, he just hasn't had many opportunities yet, but I think Moore was a steal. Rob Jackson continues you getting excellent praise form coaches. Another poor kicking week for Durant Brooks and my bet is, he will be unemployed.
