Fantasy football owners should remember that byes this week are held by the
Buffalo Bills, the Tennessee Titans, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Kansas
City Chiefs. Fantasy impacts will be felt on owners' rosters as injury (and
maybe conduct?) reports filter in to NFL headquarters relative to the action in
store for this coming weekend.
The first impact being felt from player injury will be to the
Philadelphia Eagles' Brian Westbrook. Long known as one of the more talented
runners in the NFL and a tremendous fantasy point producer when playing,
Westbrook has also shown the tendency to not make it far into NFL seasons
without losing playing time due to a myriad of injuries. This time, he is
suffering from fractured ribs. Anyone who has ever suffered from bruised, let
alone fractured, ribs knows how difficult it can be to breathe and move with
any injury to that area. Then comes the resultant danger stemming from any
contact with the affected area, which could even be life-threatening, should
one of the fractures progress and splinter into the lung area. The Eagles are
taking a "wait and see" tact, but I do not expect that Westbrook is
going to in any way be able to be on the field as an active player Sunday.
The AFC's most potent offense, the Denver Broncos, will be
missing two key spokes in their wheel as they face the Jacksonville Jaguars at
home this Sunday. Both running back Selvin Young and tight end Tony Scheffler
will be missing from sore groin injuries. Also, star rookie wide receiver Eddie
Royal is suffering from a bruised bone on his sprained left ankle, but he is
expected to be able to play by game-time. If he cannot go, then Glenn Martinez
will continue to get significant touches and big play calls. Michael Pittman
will most likely get many play calls as the replacement running back for Young.
In Scheffler's place, the first signs of a kink in Denver's armor seems to be
missing. They signed a fifth year tight end, but one who has been waived nine
previous times in his career, five of them with the broncos. At least, they
must respect Chad Mustard's persistence, so maybe this time it will work out
for him with the team.
In the first of several afflictions striking starting
quarterbacks, Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals, has spent the week not
throwing the ball, in an attempt to rest his strained elbow, so he might have a
chance to be active Sunday against the Jets. After straining his right elbow
against the Giants on September 21st, he sat out last week to try to calm down
the inflammation in his throwing arm, but whether he can perform against the
Jets remains to be seen.
The Jets have lost the services of starting safety Eric Smith,
due to a one game league suspension, but he might not have been able to play
physically regardless. He was suspended for his flagrant helmet-to-helmet hit
on Arizona star receiver Anquan Boldin, which resulted in Boldin suffering a
fractured sinus membrane and having surgery to repair it last week. Smith,
whose hit came in the last minute of play in the Jets victory over the
Cardinals, resulted in the suspension, a $50,000 fine, and a one game
check loss. He appealed the decision, but lost the appeal, therefore, no game
action for him this week. the irony is that he also was knocked unconscious by
the hit and left the game as well.
Jeff Garcia will get the start at quarterback in place of the
injured Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Brian Griese. Griese, with an elbow injury
suffered last week, is listed as questionable behind Garcia and Luke McCown. In
replacement last week, Garcia was 13 of 17 for 93 yards, one touchdown and one
interception.
Jon Kitna of the Detroit Lions is the next starting
signal caller whose status is up in the air. Kitna had to have an MRI due to
back soreness and could miss the start against Minnesota this weekend. If he
does, his 36 game consecutive starting streak will end.
Kellen Winslow is being sent to a physician by the Cleveland
Browns for testing after missing his second consecutive practice with an
unspecified illness. His status for the Monday night game against the Giants is
up in the air, but if there is any way that he can perform, the Cleveland staff
will have him on the field. With their dismal season to date. They cannot
afford not to. After an 82 catch season last year and a trip to the Pro Bowl,
this year, Winslow has 19 catches and one touchdown. the Browns cannot afford
another hit to their offensive package, which is already struggling mightily.
Another wide receiver that has to draw the attention of
fantasy owners is Mr. Ocho Cinquo, the self-proclaimed all-world Chad Johnson.
Previously being regarded as a valuable piece in Cincinnati's offensive
package, Johnson this season is blah. The question is, is he tanking the season
after not getting his wish and being traded out of town prior to the season.
Respecting and enjoying him in previous seasons has diminished for me to a
point that I do not want him on any roster that I have active in my fantasy
leagues.
Adam "Pacman" Jones has fallen into it again for the
Dallas Cowboys and their struggling cast of "Me Firsts". Jones, who
just this year was reinstated by commissioner Goodell got into a fight with a
hotel security guard in Dallas. Some people just can't help their genetics, as
is evidenced by Jones' squandering of talent and second chances. Now in the
land of Jerry Jones and his titanic ego, it is somehow puzzling that with this altercation,
reported drinking and damage to a bathroom(?), that no police reports have been
filed, no arrest made, and no one charged in the fight. One would think that
Jones would have understood that his participation in the NFL is a privilege,
not a right, but he just doesn't seem to get it. What impact this will have on
those owners who have the Dallas DST on their rosters might see their way clear
this week as the Dallas opponent is the Cardinals, who on their own roller
coaster of a season might still be resting on the laurels of their complete
demolishing of the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills last week. It just goes
to show that all the money and privilege in the world can be thrown at young
undisciplined players coming out of football factories; that do not turn them
into contributing members of society by its own definition.
The NFL soap opera channel's rating keep getting better all
the time. Good luck to all owners in yet another challenging week of the NFL
extravaganza!
