Carmelo promises 'a different me'

A little more than a week after Carmelo Anthony proclaimed to be a changed player -- a new-and-improved version ready to truly make the team his -- there is tangible evidence he is headed in the right direction. His teammates say Anthony has been more vocal in practice, particularly in directing defensive traffic. He's encouraged players and has been an active participant in running, not something many star players are concerned with. Anthony has taken his biggest hits for an inconsistent commitment to playing defense and not grasping control of the team as its unquestioned leader. "All I can say is you will see a different me," Anthony promised prior to the start of training camp. "Not so much from an offensive standpoint, but just making that commitment to make my teammates better, to make my team better on the defensive end. . . ."

yeah.... and Coach K shouldn't have coached Team USA... I mean, this isn't what Coach K preaches or anything.... he came to this realization all by himself. Come on haters, hate on Coach K some more for turning "me" personalities into "we"....

what carmelo, you gonna be bald now?

All the Carmelo haters will be out in full force. I believe Carmelo is a truly team player. He was on the brink of becoming the Nuggets leader until AI came along. I believe Carmelo is the cross between Lebron and Dwayne. He is almost the bigger version of Dwayne. He can shoot, post up, and attack the basket. Lebron's weakness is what CArmelo has. Lebron can't shoot consistently from the outside while Carmelo can. It's too bad Carmelo had/has the worst supporting cast from the two mentioned. Dwayne had Shaq and the rest of the championship team. Lebron is in the East.

It sounds like Carmelo is taking a page out of the Stephon Marbury playbook: tell the media and the fans exactly what they want to hear.

October 9, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Have to disagree with you on this one Hova, Melo wants to be like Kobe, Lebron, Wade etc. to do that he has to do more than just score. I am biased because I do like melo and I am a huge Cuse fan so I am givinghim the benefit of the doubt. I think after his rookie year he hasn't been mentioned as one of the elite and Wade and Bron have passed him. Only thing he's lacking is a committment on D.

If ever there has been a guy who was more talk and less action, Id like to see it... Didnt he promise to get 15 boards a game in the olympics? Lets all face it, he is far too soft to do any of the things he tends to promise.

October 9, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Hova, clearly Melo has gotten inspired from playing great team ball for team USA... If that spills over to his role in the Nuggets then that's great... But don't be so synical... Give him a chance...

October 9, 2008  09:28 AM ET

You played defense in the olympics earlier this year so you better be a better defender fam!

October 9, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Well I like Anthony to play more of a defensive game will only make you better and an all around player. If Pierce can do you can too. Pierce surprise me last season with his defensive skills, and even Ray, and Ray was not know for his D either. But I want to see Anthony do it before he say he will do it.

i agree with you totally .. but ithink it's deeper than just coack K.. i think it's the whole college b-ball mentality.. i think it does wonders for a players professionalism and and growth in maturity...

Sorry for my cynicism but living in New York and dealing with Marbury's pronouncement's all the time when I read a similar sounding statement from another player with a bit of a checkered past and a me-me attitude, it's very easy for me to fall back into that "whatever man (and man is not the word I would say)" trap.

It sounds good but I don't believe him.

This is very true, and I completely support the new notion that players need 1 year in college before declaring eligible for the NBA. There's a lot more problems from high schoolers than college players, and arguably more busts. College tends to weed out those that aren't suited for a more challenging game...

I think Melo takes on the personality of who is coaching him... and George Karl isn't what I'd consider a tough coach that demands too much out of his players.... where on the other side, Jim Boeheim and Coach K demanded more and got a lot out of him. He's been a pretty good NBA player, there's no question... but the Orangemen's leader and a solid 2-way contributor for Team USA shows everyone that more can be expected...

October 9, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Well, well, well...haven't we heard that before?

October 9, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Nothing changes a person like a taste of success. He tasted success on the Olympic team. He played with great players and learned from great coaches and watched them check their egos at the door and be willing to do whatever it took to win. Then he made the winner's circuit (Letterman, Leno, Good Day, etc.) and saw how a winner gets treated. He liked it and he wants some more.

Plain and simple.

What a tool.....let me translate......
'I haven't given a c r @ p about winning or playing team ball- I've just been trying to get on highlight reels and look cool.....but I may actually try and play defense this year, that's the new trend I'm hearing about & I want to jump on the bandwagon......
oh - ps you won't see the 'real' me- I still don't thinkk d is worth beans- I'm just gonna play it so you all shut up

Carmello playing defense? This must be an alternate universe.

No one gives credit to Coach Boehiem.....who was an assistant coach for the olympic team.

Melo, MVP......nice sound to it

You took the words right out of my mouth. Talk is cheap.

Denver doesn't have the personnel to compete in the West. As soon as they lose 3 or 4 in a row, watch his attitude change. Losing has a tendency to do that.
