Yankees Interested in Adrian Gonzalez

Not long after reportedly inquiring on San Diego Padres' starting pitcher Jake Peavy, reports have come up claiming that the Yankees are also interested in Padres' first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Although a trade that would bring Gonzalez to New York would likely be a "Plan B" to signing Mark Teixeira, due to the fact that the Yankees would not need to give up top prospects to acquire Teixeira, this would be a very good acquistions for the Yankees. Despite the fact that the Yankees would likely give up top talent for Gonzalez, they would not have to pay him a contract anywhere close to as large as what Teixeira would demand, and he is signed for the next three years. This makes Adrian Gonzalez a very inticing second option, especially since the only other free agent first baseman that would be able to hold down the position is the recently unhealthy Hank Blalock, unless you count Adam Dunn. (I don't)

If Mark Teixeira does not end up in pinstripes, expect Adrian Gonzalez to Yankees trade rumors to spread like wildfire.

I posted this on another blog talking about a Peavy trade to Atlanta:

San Diego and Atlanta both need pitching (amongst other things). Maybe we can get in on the Peavy action as part of a three-way where we come out of it with Adrián González or Casey Kotchman.

I would not be in favor of trading Cano or Austin Jackson but Juan Miranda (who is tearing up the AFL) might interest SD (Atlanta has a good, young 1B in the minors). Gardner, Melky, Shelley Duncan or Justian Christian may interest one of them. ATL could use a bat like Nady. SD has had interest in Matsui (and Igawa) in the past. More than any of those guys though, we have surplus pitching depth (not named Hughes).

Maybe something like Miranda, Igawa and Veras (or Bruney) to SD (along with about 4 prospects from ATL) and Kennedy to ATL (who also get Peavy) could get us González.
-or-
Kennedy plus another P (Igawa) or 2 (or Matsui) to SD (with about 2 prospects from ATL) and Nady to ATL (unless they'd rather have Gardner and Aceves). ATL would again get Peavy and we get Kotchman.

Rumors are that ATL is offering about 3 prospects out of a list of 6 or so to SD for Peavy.

ATL is said to need 2 SP's, a bat to complement Chipper Jones and bullpen help.
In the 1st example they get Peavy & Kennedy for 'about 4' prospects. In the 2nd example they get Peavy & Nady for Kotchman and 'about 2' prospects.

SD is said to need bullpen help most, also a big bat in the outfield and if they trade someone, a replacement.
In the 1st example they get Miranda to help replace González, Igawa to help fill in for Peavy, 'about 4' prospects from ATL and immediate bullpen help in Veras or Bruney. In the 2nd example they only get 'about 2' prospects from ATL but add Kennedy and someone else from NYY while only surrendering Peavy.

I don't think either example is unreasonable (we might be giving up too much) and some names could be switched around but the jist of it is that we get a good, young (mid 20's) 1B who is cheaper than Teixeira allowing more dollars for FA SP's while surrendering only Kennedy, (maybe Nady or Matsui) plus some pitching depth and/or prospects.

With Damon, Jeter, ARod, Posada, Cano, Nady and/or Matsui and a good stick at 1B, we have enough bats to fill the other OF spots with good defenders that may or may not hit well. Whatever Gardner & Melky are, they both play good D. If we lose Nady or Matsui maybe we bring back Abreu to DH and play some RF.

As far as the bullpen goes, as long as we keep Melancon to set up MO, one of either Bruney or Veras, one of either Robertson or Humberto Sanchez, one or both of Marte and Phil Coke from the left side, we have enough there for a strong pen. That's not counting holdovers like Edwar, Britton and Giese. Plus you know some of the other young guys will be pushing for a spot next year.

I'm all in favor of Teixeira but if we can't get him, maybe we can wheel and deal. Blalock is interesting but Texas may not let him go. Must keep an eye on his status.
I'm with ya on Dunn. He is slow of foot, a terrible fielder at any position (DH only). Giambi is a better defensive 1B (.992 vs .986). Dunn's .247 career avg (.225 RISP) after 8 seasons is (WOW) pitiful. He K's (WOW) way too much, once every 2.6 AB's (WOW), he'd get booed out of NY. HR's are great but he sucks at everything else. I'd rather have Doug Mientkiewicz (or a few other guys) than Adam Dunn.

I really like the first trade idea. I would really hate for the Yankees to trade away Xavier Nady, but if it must be done to get a good first baseman, so be it.
