The Yankees have roughly 88 million dollars coming off the payroll. That is a lot of money and they can definitely land some big names with that. Joel Sherman of the New York Post has come up with what he thinks the Yankees plans are.
He says:
1. Sign at least one and, preferably two, starters from among free agents CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
2. Re-sign either Mike Mussina or Andy Pettitte.
3. With the rotation deepened by free agency, use pitching prospects in particular to obtain a prime-age, high-ceiling player at first or in the outfield. Then use minor trades or free agency to address other areas.
I say get Sabathia and Lowe. Why take a chance on Burnett when he is always injured? Do we want another Pavano on our hands? I don’t think so. This should jump out at the Yanks. Taking a chance on him could be a big mistake. I think he is very talented, but he can’t seem to stay healthy. Burnett has only started over 30 games in a year two times in his career. On the other hand, Derek Lowe is never injured and he has made over 30 starts 7 years in a row! Derek Lowe has a lot of postseason experience, and at the same time he has been successful.
I think they should bring back either Pettitte or Mussina, not both of them. Assuming one of them wants to come back. Pettitte doesn’t suck. Mussina isn’t the best pitcher ever. It seems like everyone over this past year shifted to huge Mussina fans and wants to drive Pettitte out of the Bronx. This is what happened with Mussina last year, when he was struggling throughout the season. It isn’t just “what have you done for me lately.” Take into consideration previous years and their experiences.
My off-season in review would be:
Get Sabathia, Lowe, Mussina or Pettitte, and Teixeira
Keep Cano and Hughes
Bring back Luis Sojo to be the third base coach
Re-sign Abreu? Maybe..depending on the amount of years.
Give Gardner a chance..
