The Tragedy of Regional Coverage

This weeks slate of games really promised some great matchups. I was excited to see Clemson-Georgia Tech on the schedule, some good SEC games, Notre Dame-UCLA, and most notably, Texas vs. Nebraska. This is a great matchup by two legendary programs that only gets renewed every few years because of the scheduling inconsistancies. Texas is in the Big 12 South while Nebraska is in the Big 12 North. Opponents between the two rotate so this game is only played once every few years. The last time these two teams played was 2003 and before that, 1999. So I woke up today with some excitement for it.
Unfortunately, the west coast broadcasting is horribly out of wack today. I’m really not surprised because it’s happened so often to those out west that love college football. I can’t count how many times I’ve been screwed out of Texas-Oklahoma for some crappy Pac-10 matchup. But this is a new low.
If ABC is going to advertise these games as the Game of the Week, then they need to broadcast it to the whole country. Instead of football, I was watching an episode of “Zach and Cody” this morning. They apparently thought that Zach and Cody catching a jewel thief was better than watching Colt McCoy lead a two minute drill versus the Cornhuskers.
How is the West Coast compensated for not televising a great Big 12 matchup? They’re showing a game for the west coast at 4 PM PST. The matchup? San Jose St. and Nevada. Yes, they actually are Division 1. But they play in the WAC. Let’s see…Texas-Nebraska or a battle of two WAC teams? We’re not even getting a WAC game involving Boise St. and their blue turf. That might have made things a bit better. There’s really no reason for 16% of the country to watch this garbage.
Just because I live in a bordering state doesn’t mean I’d rather watch crappy football. To top it off, Texas beat Nebraska on a last second field goal. A 22-20 thriller. I’m not expecting the same from Nevada and San Jose St.
