Titans Want to Give Draft Bust Mike Williams Another Chance

After being dumped by two teams in the past year, the bust known as Mike Williams appears to have found another sucker landing place, as the Titans are expected to sign the former USC star.

If anyone can fix Williams you would figure his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow would be the guy to turn to. The funny thing is it was Williams key drop late in the loss to the Titans that caused the Raiders to give up on him and waive him.

Williams was one of Matt Millen's famous run of picking first-round wide receivers. While he wasn't as bad as primo-bust Charles Rogers, less than 50 catches in a three-year career is still pretty terrible. It makes sense for the Titans to bring him in and kick the tires, but it's hard to see exactly where he fits into the Titans receiver rotation--Roydell Williams and Brandon Jones are the deep threats while Justin Gage and Eric Moulds fill the big possession receiver role.
The knock against Williams is that he combines poor conditioning with an absolute lack of focus. Since he carries too much weight he's not fast enough to get open against NFL cornerbacks, and he doesn't really use his size that well. Throw in a tendency to drop passes and you've got the makings of a coach killer.

At this point it almost seems more useful to tell Williams to gain a little more weight and become an H-back, but his poor blocking would likely make him only a role player in even that role.
