Women's developmental Squad on the right track
Thursday, November 22, 2007

A trip to the Bahamas is usually a positive experience, but the U.S. women&rsquos developmental sevens squad made its trip extra special by tallying a 4-2 mark at the NAWIRA Sevens tournament and finishing the weekend with a runner-up finish. The only two losses of the tournament came against the eventual champions Canada, but the coaches and players of the U.S. squad were generally pleased with the team&rsquos efforts and are hopeful for the potential of the group.

The team began the tournament on Day 2 of play against Guyana and constant offensive pressure and stellar defense led to a 24-0 blanking to start the tourney. The offense had a bit more trouble getting started against Jamaica in game 2, but the defense remained steady as the U.S. took the 12-0 win.  The final match of the tournament was a close one as well, with the U.S. squad jumping out to a 10-5 lead early on, but coming up just short in the final minutes, dropping the title in a 19-15 loss.

The team gets a bit of a breather for the next two weeks, but a select camp for 25 players opens in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the middle of December to begin the selection process for their next big international tournament. The camp will mainly serve as an opportunity for coaches to select the final pool of players that will comprise the 2008 traveling squad
