With the Los Angeles Dodgers expected to announce the signing of free agent pitcher Hiroki Kuroda Sunday, the Seattle Mariners will now have to turn in other directions to meet their goal of a rotation upgrade.

The Seattle Times reported the Mariners are still pursuing a trade of Baltimore's Erik Bedard. Free agents still on the market include Kyle Lohse and Carlos Silva.

"We have other options," manager John McLaren said of losing Kuroda. "We had another game plan if it didn't work out, and that's where we are now. We've got some coals in the fire. We'll just see where it takes us. Bill's (GM Bavasi) got some things going."

Lohse is so inconsistent that he would not merit much more than a 3 yr deal at a low salary maybe 3-5 million, and that would still be high. however, he gives innings when he is not being cracked all over the field

Seattle fans, I wouldn't count on Bedard. I think the O's want way to much, otherwise he would have been traded by now. I'll see your boy's in Anahiem. Good luck against Texas and Oakland.

I'm happy that the M's didn't rush to overpay for a trade or a player right away, but I'm really concerned if we're going to wind up with another Weaver/Ramirez combination out of our 4 and 5 spots because things just don't seem to be progressing. Bavasi always puts out there that we're players, and we see either a swing and a miss, or nothing. The Mariners put themselves in this situation a long time ago by holding onto what they thought was a strong, deep starting pitching staff of Garcia, Piniero, Meche, etc.....what a joke that was.....
BTW: why would you sign Lohse to 3 years if he's inconsistant??? That's insane!!!!! If you have to sign Lohse, he's only worth a 1 year deal, that way you're not stuck paying salary when you have to release him.

why is everyone so hard on the M's dont forget they were in the wild card race most of the season, and they had jeff weaver in their rotation, add Silva/Colon and we'll be in it again, bedard isnt worth giving up young prospects, especially first round picks like Morrow and Jones.

#10: their hard on the M's because they play in the only 4 team division (meaning they automatically have a better chance to make the playoffs 1 in 4 than any other team in the league 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 w/o the wildcard) on top of that the rangers are rebuilding and now the Athletics are too. So the M's actually have a 1 in 2 shot (with the Angels) of making the playoffs if they would just make some serious decisions about pitching. Whether thats spend more per year to entice Kuroda or trading a top prospect to get Bedard. 50/50 shot make the move now.

Last year the M's were criticized by many for not signing zito and schmidt - in retrospect I'm sure glad they didn't put up big $ for those guys. i doubt Kuroda is going to put up big #s and likely isn't worth all the money he's going to get. Bedard is a proven pitcher and Seattle has to decide if its worth giving up Jones or another for him. I wouldn't do Morrow or any other pitcher because we'll be in the same position - you have to hold onto pitching when Loshe and Colon are the best FAs on the market still.

Bedard is a young stud.......he is absolutely worth giving up young prospects for. I hope the M's pull the trigger and get him. His ERA would be in the 2's pitching in Safeco!!!

Another typical offseason for the Mariners - losing out on the marquis names and overpaying for middle of the road talent to make it look like they're trying to make the team competitive. Weaver, Sexson, Beltre are all overpaid bums. Adding Silva, Lohse or Colon would be just another guy to add to that list. They can't compete with the sox and yanks in the Santana discussions and I think Scott is right, O's want too much for Bedard. Gotta hope they can make a run at Blanton or whoever the A's are trading this week. Otherwise they might as well give some young kids a chance and continue adding to the lineup - hell look where the yankees are with terrible pitching.

#23: Colon couldn't find his way out of a litter box and you want to pencil him in as the #3 pitcher....down go the Mariners. Colon shouldn't and I don't think will, get a major league contract. He's going to get a minor league contract with incentives if he makes a big league squad....so to pencil him in at #3...is plain crazy.
#24 Highly unlikely Blanton is traded within the division, with that said it's Bedard/Capuano trade or Lohse/Silva signing.

    heres some real insight.
first of all mariners need to not trade for bedard and give away adam jones. if we can get bedard without giving up our #1 prospect then heck do it. heres the most ideal and reasonable situation for the mariners this offseason.
trade Sherrill, johnson or burke, and one other high end prospect (i.e. not morrow or jones) for bedard, actually even two would be fine
then you go out and sign either lohse or silva to 2-3 year contracts for 8-10 mill.
    your rotation is then-Bedard-Hernandez-Batista-Silva/Lohse-Washburn.
thats a playoff rotation. Bavasi needs to seriously be do this.

The M's will not give up Morrow or Jones.... for anyone. Unless it were a perenial all star player that had several years lef tin the tank without question. So put that one in your pipe and smoke it. There would be nothing gained by trading Morrow for another pithcer. Did you see his numbers last year as a rookie. Obviously he would probably not put up such numbers as a starter, but you could see he has the juice to be a good SP... if he can stay healthy and build his stamina to handle the innings without blowing his arm up, he could be a nice addition to the rotation.
