College Football Best Bets for 11-11-06

dennis-dix-custom.jpgAfter another mediocre week, my record in this column is 10-6. If you’re parlaying these picks, you’re probably getting owned. I’m looking to turn things around this week after an uneventful few Saturdays. Here are my best four bets for Saturday.

Wisconsin -2 over Iowa: Iowa has been a disappointment this season. They’re just 6-4 but even worse, they’ve been a horrible cover team (1-8). That’s a major contrast to the surprising Wisconsin Badgers, who are 9-1 and are 7-1-1 against the spread this year. Iowa has won the last four meetings but Wisconsin has its sights set on Pasadena and the Rose Bowl. They can’t afford a slip-up here. Meanwhile, Iowa has lost four of their five Big Ten games. They have struggled to win the trench battles all season so it’s a bad sign when one of the most physical teams in the conference comes into town. PJ Hill is second on the nation in rushing and with a big game versus the Hawkeyes, he’ll pass Garrett Wolfe on the list. The Badgers have everything to play for in this one. I would go with the better cover team here.

Oregon +8.5 over USC: The Trojans haven’t exactly been the nation’s best cover team this year. They covered last week against Stanford but before that, had failed to cover in their last five games. USC has gotten spotty play from their running backs and may be forced to throw, which plays into the hands of Oregon’s secondary. Oregon’s pass defense is the best in the conference. The Trojans begin their gauntlet of games where they play California, Notre Dame, and UCLA. This game is going to give USC a real test. I see it being close down to the wire. If USC couldn’t put away Washington or Arizona State at home, how are they going to put away Jonathan Stewart and the Ducks?

UNLV +9.5 over SDSU:
The Chuck Long era hasn’t gotten off to a very good start in San Diego. The Aztecs are 1-7 and two weeks ago, lost a D1-AA team in Cal Poly. Aztec fans have switched their attention to basketball. SDSU is unsure about who to play at quarterback and running back. Kevin Craft and Kevin O’Connell will likely rotate, as will Lynell Hamilton with freshman Attiyah Henderson. Both teams are 1-7; SDSU has a good chance at winning this one but I can’t see a blowout out in this matchup.

Michigan -19.5 over Indiana:
You can’t possibly think the Wolverines are going to come out flat again do you? They’ve heard criticism for a week about the slip-up vs. Ball State. Now they’re going to want to make a statement. Ohio State looms a week from Saturday but Indiana is now. And Michigan is looking to put a huge number up on the Hoosiers to show that they’re ready for November 18th. They shouldn’t have trouble against a Hoosiers team that gave up 63 points last week vs. Minnesota. Indiana also allowed 44 points to the Buckeyes a couple of weeks back. Michigan is going to approach that number and cover easily.
