Ali Baba And The 40 (Time) Thieves

Times from rivals.com

I’m not really sure what Ali Baba and the 40 thieves means but I know the recently robbed Beastie Boys chant it during Rhymin’ and Stealin’ so it must be cool. Plus, I don’t think any other headlines are left for blog posts about the phenomenon known as SEC Speed so deal with it.

By way of Toledo Talk, here’s a comparison of 40 times for Ohio State, LSU and Florida and as you can see, the Buckeyes hold their own on both sides of the ball.

That said, 40 times don’t win football games so this is pretty useless info but thought I’d share so I could officially join in the SEC Speed bonanza. Feels good.

  1. 40 times may not completely capture the phenomenon of “speed”, however defined, but at least scientifically, it’s a very good proxy. Moreover, it’s probably the only proxy (no measure of lateral speed exists to my knowledge, because if it becomes a 40yd dash-type chase, then it’s too late and the big play has already been given up. lateral speed is more important.) to debunk this stupid Noble Lie of SEC Speed other than censoring the SEC Commissioner and players and detaining sports journalists in a “correctional” facility. The latter I just like for its own merits.

  2. Things we assume when watching our favorite team, but it’s nice to see in print. I would never argue that the BIG10 is faster than the SEC and I’ve never really heard anyone ’round here try to argue that. It just gets old arguing that Buckeyes can run with anyone (ask Miami’s ‘02 team). USC never argues it when the PAC10 is down, Oklahoma never has to argue it when the BIG12 is weak, but regardless of whether the BIG10 is up or down we always have to hear our team is full of slow, fat players. Annoying is an understatement.

Unfortunately, a lot of our players DID get fat and slow befor last years NC game & that really hurt the perception of the Big10.

Chris, where did you get those 40 times?

  4. I think the guy who put the list together said he got the times from rivals.com

  5. Speed kills in football. There is a difference in Northern vs. Southern football due to the weather.Love to have all those small, speedy SEC guys up for a game in January at the shoe. Not that anyone else would want to sit through it.

I would, that’s for sure. another reason for a playoff, with the higher seed getting home field. i’d love for last years NC game to have been played up north.

  7. Ohio has always had many of the fastest players and best athletes…

I love this. It just went out to every single one of my SEC friends.

  10. Zombie Nation

This is one of those arguments we’re never going to “win.” The SEC fanbase doesn’t give a rat’s ass about reality. Of course, that includes Penn State’s punishing win over Tennessee in the 2008 Outback Bowl, or Wisconsin out-playing Arkansas in the Capital One, or their 8-6 record over the last few years in bowls vs. the Big Ten. I’ve tried this topic before, and while we “yankees” remain grounded to the real world, those from SEC country fail to realize, well, anything that makes sense.

  11. Zombie Nation is so correct, there was NO MENTION about th Pen state game or Wisconsin. BUT again both those teams can and WILL win with our slower guys

This is a very interesting post from Wizard of Odds. Apparently Florida has not played a non conference game outside the state since 1991.
SEC teams have traveled the least out of any conference, helping our argument of them coming north to play any game.
