Shadows of 2005

How will Dungy handle his team's "favored" role, and how will the team respond?
Well, here we are. It's been a month since the Colts have played a meaningful game, and even longer than that since they played a game against a top tier opponent. Now, the playoffs come to the RCA Dome, and with them the frantic, nervous excitement that comes with playoff time. It's funny, but the playoffs are both the best and worst for me. I get so worked up, so excitable, so shaky that I oftentimes don't watch whole quarters of a playoff game. So, when the playoffs start, I'm both excited and crapping my pants.

This year especially has me wearing extra Depends because of the eerie similarities to the dark 2005 season; I say dark because despite a 13-0 start, the #1 seed in the playoffs, and the beginnings of a great Colts defense the season is remembered mostly for a big playoff screw-up against the Steelers and the death of Tony Dungy's son, James. Thankfully this season, there has been no major tragedy (as far as we know) with the Colts. Hopefully, it stays that way. But despite winning the Super Bowl last season, the long, dark shadow cast by the 2005 season still touches the minds of all Colts fans.

During these playoffs, the Colts franchise can finally shine a big, bright light on that shadow, exorcising more demons on the road to Championship glory. And yes, I'm aware I'm starting to sound like J.R.R. Tolkien.

I said in this comments thread that the Colts were facing both a tough physical opponent as well as a mental hurdle. Despite our annoyance with the way they play and how the conduct themselves, the Chargers are a very good football team. However, almost as strong as the Chargers is the knowledge that the Colts have squandered two first round byes in the Manning era. In fact, the Colts have never won a playoff game after a first round bye. In 1999, the Colts were 13-3 and the second seed, like this season. They lost in the divisional round to a very strong Tennessee Titans club in the RCA Dome. In 2005, the season of darkness ended with Mike Vanderjagt sending a gimme 48-yard FG to his mom in the stands rather than through the up rights, handing 6th-seeded Pittsburgh a tremendous playoff win.

Like 2005, this team has had to rest numerous starters because of injury. Marvin Harrison, Robert Mathis, Ryan Diem, Raheem Brock, and Antoine Bethea have all missed significant time since November. Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck made a big deal during the Giants v. Bucs game that the Giants playing starters against the Pats in Week Seventeen gave them an edge over the Bucs, who rested numerous starters in Weeks Sixteen and Seventeen. Troy Aikman quickly refuted Buck's argument, but there is something to be said about it. Last season, the Colts had to play starters up until the last game of the regular season. The Colts also played in the Wildcard Round. Being in the under-dog role, and playing up until the last game of the regular season, really helped propel the Colts to a Championship.

This season, it's different. Like in 1999 and 2005, the Colts are certainly not under-dogs. Sure, they are over-looked, slighted, and considered a third or fourth thought when reporters have New England, Dallas, and Green Bay to yack about, but in terms of wins and loses the Colts are a favorite. Historically, this organization has not played in the playoffs when placed in that position.

With this upcoming match-up, the Colts have an opportunity to exorcise the second round bye demon, and play the kind of tough, Championship-style football we expect from teams favored. The one sense of calm I get (and with calm comes confidence) is that this Colts team is far and away better than the 2005 team. This team, unlike teams in the past, is more comfortable in their skin. They know who they are. They know what they do, and how to do it. They are not rattled, play smart, and have very strong veteran leadership. Still, it's better to write about these things, get them out in the open, and discuss them honestly. The Colts have a big challenge coming up; one of the biggest they've ever faced.

In facing that challenge, will Dungy add a wrinkle or two to the playoff gameplan, much like he did in 2003 and last season? Will he close practices and add something to the schemes that will throw San Diego for a loop? We shall see.

Well....
I'm a lot more calm (just as you wrote in the last paragraph) than I ever have been before.

Why? This isn't the talented yet inexperienced 1999 team. This isn't 2005 and no tragedy has beset our team.

We're the defending Super Bowl champs and we know how to win in the playoffs. We're hungry to denfend our title. We're healthier. We boast the #1 scoring defense in the NFL. We have Dungy's calm, perspective, and focus to lead us.

Still, with all the stated strengths, I don't see this Colts team taking anything for granted. They know that any team can beat them at anytime. That gives the Colts a huge advantage.

Oh, I expect a little rust to show early, but I then expect our team to kick ass and take names.

What's crazy is that the New Orleans game seems just like yesterday... Here we go!!!!!!

It's up to the O line
This game will be decided on how well we protect Peyton. If we do that well, they don't have a chance. Every Colt''s playoff choke comes down to the O line losing. Every one.

Our demons
>>the Colts have an opportunity to exorcise the second round bye demon<<

Seems like our demons are getting ever-more obscure and less formidable. Not that I don't take your point. I do. Still, when compared to the "big game" demon, the "Patriots" demon (and it's relative, the "Foxboro" demon), the Super Bowl demon, etc., the second round bye demon seems like more of an imp than a Lord of Hell.

BBS, you guys have nothing to worry about
The 2007 Chargers are certainly not the 2005 Steelers who in my opinion were a team of destiny that season.

I watched the SD/Tenn game yesterday and was not impressed with either team at all. You guys should blow them out your doom next week and if you don't I'll be shocked.

The game you should feel nervous about actually will come a week later, the SD game though, that should be a walk in the park.

Blowout
I have watched all four playoff games so far, and I was interested to see that absolutely none of them WERE blowouts!  I thought the Bucs would blow the Giants away.  Didn't happen.  They didn't even beat them.  I thought the Chargers would blow away the Titans.  Yes, they beat them by 11 points, but it was close almost to the end.

Yes the Seahawks beat the 'skins by 21 points, but at the end of the 3rd quarter, it was 13-0, which is still anybody's game.

I expect the Colts game to be a blow out. We will probably spot them some points while our team shakes the rust off, but then sometime in the 2nd quarter, we will take over, and score 24 unanswered points to win the game.

Check it to pancakes! Pancakes!

the reason why the WC games weren't really
blowouts was because all of those teams were matched evenly for the most part, they were all average to decent teams.

This week will be different because the better teams in the league are now playing against those same teams.

Well...
IMO obviously there is no certainty but I think this team is far different than 05 and especially 99. I think wining the SB last year will show great dividends Sunday because they finally don't have that pressure to get there. Obviously they will still have pressure and nerves since it is the playoffs but it is clear that they SHOULD be more relaxed and that should have a big effect on the game

I doubt this team would have gone 13-2 (yes , 13-2 as I refuse to count the last game) this season with all the injuries and new, young guys had they not won the SB last season and got past that hurdle. They now seem to play and act like champions and that I think is a huge confidence boost.

As stated though, the key to this game will be the OL and if they can actually do something called pass protect. If they do then they "should" dominate but if they have protection issues (like in 05) then it will be a diff game but the colts should still hopefully win.

Oh and I agree that 07 San Diego is not like 05 Pitts and unless they magically transform into a diff team they are not THAT good and rivers will probably get picked off 4 times by Bobzilla and his boys.

Oh and the one thing I really like is you just know Peyts wants to avenge that bad 1st half in november so I expect him to be extra sharp with his throws and his decisions.

Addai and Marvin
I don't think we can discount the importance of these two players on offense.  In the 05 game, and I believe the 99 game too, Edge looked plan gassed(which also had to do with the O-line, I know).  If Addai(and Keith/Dawson) can step up and establish a solid threat on the ground, Marvin can go back to pulling double-teams - or taking advantage of them on Reggie, and the O-line can stay solid, we will win easily.  Phillip Rivers will surely be taken advantage of by the "Hit Squad" and the Zombie will eat LT's brains for sure.

I also hope Mathis and Brock are back for this game, as a pass rush will be very valuable in this game.  It also wouldn't hurt to use this game to get the rust off for New England(or JAX?).
