Memo to the NCAA: You can stop promoting the Heisman
With the Heisman Trophy now in the hands of Troy Smith (at least, we assume it made it home safely), it brings to mind the fact that the award is college football’s answer to the WWE(F)'s King of the Ring.  It’s nothing more than hyped up award that doesn’t necessarily equal success.  For every Bo Jackson, Earl Campbell, and Reggie Bush, there’s a Kurt Angle, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Bret Hart.  Likewise, for every Jason White, Eric Crouch, and Gino Torretta, there’s a Harley Race, Billy Gunn, and Mabel.  (White gets compared to Harley Race because they were both really really old when they won it… and went on to do nothing afterwards.  Plus they kind of look alike, even though White is 25 years younger). 

It’s a 50/50 crapshoot whether or not a Heisman or King of the Ring winner will go on to be successful.  And for that reason, the networks should chill out on the Heisman stuff (actually, that's not the reason... the reason is because no one really cares).  Is it really necessary to morph a 10 minute presentation into a 90 minute production?  Were people actually excited to tune in to watch Troy Smith accept a trophy?   I think the unanimous answer is no. 

All that being said, I’d venture to guess Troy Smith will turn out to be a Tito Santana type winner: if he’s used in the right role, his athleticism could make him a quality role player.  If he actually tries to be a full time quarterback, he’ll be another Ken Shamrock: lots of talent and potential failing to be utilized.  Troy Smith... ARRIBA! 

-- And here’s your Yearly Lisfranc Injury Report… Lions’ running back Kevin Jones has been diagnosed with a Lisfranc injury, which basically means the ligaments and tissues that connect his bones in the mid-foot area tore apart.  As awful as that sounds, it looks even worse with the aid of this picture.
