Veterans Scholes and Neville Set to Bolster United Side
Friday, January 18th, 2008 by Dina Ely
An already-strong Manchester United side is set to be further bolstered by the return of veteran players Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, who have been out with injury. They have been absent from the team for multiple months—Scholes since October with a knee injury that required surgery, and Neville since March ‘07 with an ankle injury.
Neville’s return has been rumored repeatedly over the months, and he has played with the reserve team. However, multiple comebacks to the first team have been delayed over continued concerns for his injured ankle ligaments. United’s assistant manager Carlos Queiroz announced at a news conference that the team expects to have Neville back in action by the end of the month. He may train with the first team in Saudi Arabia this weekend, or be recalled to the reserve team next week.
Scholes could play as early as the FA Cup match between United and Tottenham on January 27th. The management is awaiting the verdict of the medical staff, which will be delivered late next week. It is unlikely that he will start, but Queiroz is hopeful that he will have clearance to be an option for substitution.
With a combined appearance tally of over 900 games, Scholes and Neville are no strangers to the United strip. Although the current first team has been managing well in their absence—presently at the top of the EPL table, chased closely by Arsenal—the club’s management seems confident their return will help steer United to another Treble-winning season end.
