Greg Ellis won Comeback Player of the Year honors earlier this month and it was well deserved. After returning from an Achilles injury and changing positions, Ellis registered 12.5 sacks on a Cowboys team that won 13 games. But it's not clear what his future is in Dallas.
Here's an interesting nugget tracked down by Blogging the Boys (via Patriots.com):
Q: What two or three quality players that are unrestricted free agents do you Andy, Tom and Paul think take a reduction in salary to play in NE?Well, at 32 Ellis would fit right in with the other Patriots' linebackers. In fact, he'd bring down the average age of the unit. I'd like to say that players taking discounts to come to New England is a myth, but just look at the deals signed by Donte' Stallworth and Randy Moss.
A: One player to keep an eye is ... Ellis. Following Dallas' loss to the Giants, Ellis basically said he didn't want to be a Cowboy anymore, suggesting Anthony Spencer should start next year in his place. I also had a source down in Big D tell me that Ellis wants to go to a Super Bowl contender and mentioned the Patriots as a team he would like to play for.
Ellis would be a logical Belichick addition, a hungry veteran who will take less money to come to New England because he wants to win a Super Bowl. Not to mention that Ellis can still play and would really help the team at outside linebacker. Watch out for Ellis this offseason because he doesn't want to play for the Cowboys anymore. That I know for certain.
And although the salary cap was supposed to level the playing field, the Patriots have done a great job acquiring talent. And by doing so, they've created a market that allows them to get top-tier players at (relatively) affordable rates, thus making it even easier for them to stay competitive.
I have no idea where Ellis will end up next season, but the fact that the Patriots are an option, particularly if it's at a reduced rate, is pretty interesting.

It's gonna be funny when Dallas is in the Super Bowl and New England's great ride comes to an end and he's at home watching his former team at the top of the mountain.

Hey Adam the only thing I find funny is you thinking Dallas is going anywhere. Dallas is the most over rated team I have ever seen. The last time I checked Dallas hasn't won anything in this decade and their fans act like they are something special, well they are special "losers" Pats 19-0.
