Patriots Links for Friday 1/25

Chuck Klosterman has a fascinating article on the Patriots up at ESPN.com.  He argues that the Patriots might be better remembered if they were to lose in the Super Bowl, as heartbreaking losses resonate more with people than victories.

However, Sports Illustrated's Don Banks has five reasons the Patriots will not lose the Super Bowl.

On the other hand, write the Globe's Michael Vega and Mike Reiss, Belichick will be the first to tell you that the Giants will be formidable opponents.

As for Tom Brady, Howard Ulman reports he was absent from media activities today.  Dan Shaughnessy believes everyone's imaginations are running wild speculating on Brady's apparent injury.  With the Herald, Karen Guregian agrees that no real conclusions can be drawn about the situation.

The Giants also are suffering from ailments, reports Reiss on his blog.

John Tomase reports on some of the recent accusations that some Patriots players are dirty, and he spoke with Richard Seymour about how to get past criticisms like those.

Karen Guregian focuses on Randy Moss and his first trip to the Super Bowl in her notes column.

Jeff Horrigan examines the matchup between Ellis Hobbs and Plaxico Burress.

Finally, Michael Felger looks at how the salary cap and free agency have both helped and hindered the Patriots' ability to win consistently.

Klosterman's article
is pretty shitheaded. In his scenario, NYG would be much better remembered than NE, and nobody is better remembered for losing other than Rocky. OK? Besides, this isn't baseball where losing championships is cute for two franchises; this is football, where nobody cares about you if you lose. And they shouldn't.

klosterman can go to hell...
there is little I despise more than that kind of writing.  the idea that something would be better, not because of a positive or negative outcome, but simply because it would give him something to write about.  It is the definition of why 'Reporting' in this day and age is so awful.  Schadenfreude of the worst kind.

Yes, I know he's an opinion writer, that doesn't mean he isn't a ghoul.[/rant]

superbowl 20 was memorable...  remember why?  does that make it a good thing?  scott norwood is memorable.  the hindenburg is memorable.  this is a lazy writer praying for something he can gleefully refer to for years to come when anybody else achieves much.

on a side note, the one thing I fear the most about the future regarding this game is that if the pats win, if anyone goes 3-0 next year, people will start asking about 'undefeated'...  they started around game 6 this year didn't they?

Cris Carter
said it in, I think, Week Two. I know people who before the season said "19-0!" and meant it (they weren't even Patriots fans).

Truthfully, this is a monster team on paper and a monster team in reality. I doubt people immediately start talking about another team going undefeated next year until they prove themselves really soon and win eight games, at least.

It happens every year, though; the talk.

Let's go New England Patriots!

Not to push the outcome,
but, if the Pats win, I suggest we all go out and buy a nice bottle of champagne.  Just for next year.
