Bring Your Own Big Wheel

"BYOBW" celebrates street racing with old-school Big Wheels. Thousands of spectators and hundreds of racers braved the steep and hilly streets of San Francisco for this year's event, which was the eighth-annual running of the Big Wheels. The race took place near 20th and Vermont, where the street cuts back about a half-dozen times over the course of one block. In previous years, the race was held on Lombard Street, which is more famous but IMO not as treacherous as this year's Potrero Hill course. The video doesn't quite do the event justice. It's even more dangerous and fun than it appears. Most of the footage I shot was from the race's first or second turn, so you can imagine how many more wrecks there are as you approach the bottom of the hill. Next year I promise to either race in the event myself, or at the very least bring extra batteries for my camera so that I can get footage from more than one or two turns. Thanks to Freddy Machete and Equipto for the music, and to John Lankes for photography.
