Last Sunday the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Season Started with the Great American Race known as the Daytona 500. Danica Patrick was on pole and led a few laps in this race. A Race Recap coming up.
The Great American Race was under way when the green flag dropped as pole sitter Danica Patrick was leading the field into turn 1 with Jeff Gordon along side her. Jeff passed her heading into turn 2 and lead the famous opening lap at Daytona. Not just the first lap, but the first 20 plus laps. Last year's Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth soon took the lead and led 86 laps. The most of the day.
Lap 33: The first crash of the day happens as Kasey Kahne gets bumped from behind and spins. Which causes a big chain reaction that soon causes a big wreck between turns 1 and 2. Other drivers involved where Kevin Harvick who took two big hits from Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya who where also involved. Kevin Harvick and a few other divers involved in this wreck where done for the day. Another driver involved was defending Sprint Cup Series Champion Brad Keselowski but he was fine and continued the race.
Lap 72: During the green flag pit stops, Kyle Busch came in to pit but missed his marks and it lost him many positions on the track. He would then battle his way back to as high as 2nd through out the day.
Lap 90: Danica Patrick makes NASCAR history by becoming the first female in NASCAR history to lead a green flag lap. The fans where on their feet and cheering so loud you almost could not even hear the actual cars on the track. It was a great moment for NASCAR.
Lap 137: The second crash of the day occurs in turn 2 as former Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne bumps Brad Keselowski. Brad spins and then hits Trevor back who then collects Carl Edwards and several other drivers. Brad did not suffer any significant damage and continued on with the race. However, Trevor Bayne, Carl Edwards and other drivers where done for the day.
Lap 150: Problems for Joe Gibbs Racing occur as both their drivers Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch come to pit road with engine problems and park their cars in the garage and where done for the day. Both drivers where running first and second before their mechanical failures occurred.
Lap 177: Jeff Burton slaps the wall hard in turn 4 and is then done for the day with heavy damage to his car.
Lap 191: Caution comes out for debris. The debris was later discovered as aluminum that flew onto the track and slightly hit the front end of Brad Keselowski's car.
Lap 194: With 7 laps to go, Jimmie Johnson passes his old championship rival from last year Brad keselowski for the lead.
Lap 200: On the final lap, Johnson still is leading the field. Travis Kvapil hit the wall hard in turn 2 but no caution comes out. Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. work together and charge their way to second and third. Danica soon goes from 3rd to 8th in just on corner. Coming to the finish line for the checkered flag Dale tries to make a move and pass Jimmie Johnson for the lead. But it is not enough as the 5 time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson wins the 2013 Daytona 500.
Overall, this was a pretty good race. I think what makes this race so great is the pack racing. The close together side by side racing. It's so cool because you never know who can charge their way to the front or fall back. I wish they could use pack racing for every race of the year. I am not going to make a prediction to who will win the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship this year because it is way too early to do so. But I can promise you that not only will you see me talk more about NASCAR this year, but you will also get a prediction to just who will win the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship this year.
