Earlier today the New York Jets reported to training camp. There All Pro Cornerback Darrelle Revis was a no-show. The Jets confirmed that Revis missed the morning conditioning run at the team’s facility. If he misses Sunday’s team meeting at 5 pm he will be considered an official holdout.
This could be a huge hit to the Jets if he misses an extended amount of time. Revis was by far the most dominant defensive player in the NFL last season. Revis wants paid like the top cornerback in the league. Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha is paid $16 million per year. The Jets are offering Revis $12 million but with no guaranteed.
The Jets Rex Ryan has not shied from talking about the Jets going to the Super Bowl this year. Without Revis it may be tough to win the AFC with teams like Baltimore, Cincinnati, and very likely that Pittsburgh will be back as well.
If this turns into a long holdout, by league rule Revis will be fined $16,000 a day. If he does not report by August 10th the season will not count as a full season. He is scheduled to make $1 million this season.
The Jets need to make sure this doesn’t get ugly. The salary Revis is making right now is ludicrous for a top-tier guy like Revis is. With Revis the Jets are favorites to win the AFC but without him they are in a battle with several other teams.
