Hey there everybody, nice to be back! I thought I'd check in quick before my 9pm start of 24 here at home. Just back from a crazy, busy weekend with lacrosse, family and Super Bowl! Allow me to get you guys caught up.
First of, as the title states games five and six are in the books. Home win versus Philly on Friday and a crucial road win in the ever tough confines of the HSBC arena in Buffalo on Saturday. We did start slowly against the Wings on Friday, but found our stride nicely to come out with a 19 - 11 win. We had so many good performances, I won't go through them all but one that needs to be mentioned is the come back of my good friend Kim Squire! He has been out of the NLL or three seasons and away from the Rock for closer to six, but he was back in fine form on Friday chipping in with two goals and an assist. It was great to re-connect on some of our old magic! He is a tenacious performer and will help us big time as our season progresses. Welcome back KIMBO!! By the way, great job by the fans to welcome him back properly as well in the ACC!
In Buffalo the next night, things were much tougher. Having played the night before we were a bit tired and banged up, but we found a way to play hard and hang around while Chugger kept things tight. They played a very physical, tough game but we didn't back down and we were able to grind out a 14-10 win. A very big weekend to say the least!! They are a good team, and they're 1-5 certainly did not reflect their play on Saturday, they were desperate and played well. Offensively we rode our veteran Blaine Manning as he seemed to find the net each time we needed a goal! Great job Blainer!!
Either way, we are six games in and sit alone in first place atop the NLL East division. A great start to the season indeed. Mind you things don't get a whole lot easier as we play both Edmonton and Calgary this weekend. Home Friday and on the road Sunday at the Saddledome in Cowtown!! It will be a great test for our team. Stay tuned Monday, I'll have you filled in on how we made out.
Just like the Grey Cup this year, the Super Bowl was certainly no let down. A great game by my standards. I liked the Saints to win it, but not nearly enough to tell anybody. So here I go....I told you so! I guess that doesn't work unless you tell people before the big game. Truthfully, I find it hard to bet against Peyton, he is really that good. But he did make one mistake and the calling card of the Saints all year has been big points off turnovers and wouldn't you know it, it bit them in the ass big time. The Saints were a very resilient bunch all year, and their persistence showed in the big game as well, battling back from 10-0. Good for the Saints, good for the city of New Orleans and good for Drew Brees to show all his naysayers up! I am sure there have been plenty throughout his life!! I guess us Lions fans will have to wait another year for this kind of story!!
In Tigers news they officially inked up Verlander for the long haul and I am happy for that. He is our rock on the mound and he earned this one for sure. Good on management for making him happy. Now Justin, don't just sit on this money we need another big one from you next year!!
Habs GM Bob Gainey has stepped down as well. I guess if he wanted to go, so goes life. A true Hab at heart, he did a very admirable job while he was in charge. The boys seem to be playing inspired hockey even without Mike Cammaleri. I hope they can keep in the playoff hunt until he comes back! Keep up the good work boys.
Lastly, on a family note I did the official Wiarton Willy weekend (Sunday anyway) up in my wife's hometown of Wiarton, Ontario. For those who don't know...Willy is predicting another 6 weeks of winter. I guess we don't have to tell that to the folks in Washington, DC!
Until next time, Go Rock Go!
