No, the New York Rangers don’t have a goaltending controversy. Veteran Henrik Lundqvist still reigns as King of Madison Square Garden in the final year of his contract.
But the New York Post notes that Cam Talbot has gone 6-0 with a 1.48 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage in his six starts since Oct. 26. By contrast, Lundqvist is 2-5 with a 2.58 GAA and .917 save percentage in his seven starts since Nov. 12.
Talbot success gives Rangers coach Alain Vigneault pause for thought. The 26-year-old rookie stifled the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 in his last start, turning aside 35 of 37 shots.
The Post notes that Lundqvist’s .921 even-strength save percentage this season ranks just 17th in the NHL among the 27 goalies who have started at least half their team’s games.
King Henrik has elevated his play after a dreadful start, but he still hasn't found his familiar game-stealing form.
